5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic introductory classics for kids — engaging, readable, and beautifully adapted

J.M.R. · November 18, 2025

The Classic Starts series is such a great way to introduce kids to well-known classics without overwhelming them. The stories are thoughtfully abridged, easy to follow, and keep the heart of the original books intact. What I liked• Perfect for young readers: The language is simplified just enough to be accessible, but still keeps the timeless feel of the original stories.• Great length: Short chapters and manageable page counts make these great for independent reading or bedtime read-alouds.• Beautifully adapted: The books keep key plot points and themes without feeling watered down.• Wide variety: Everything from Little Women to Treasure Island to Anne of Green Gables — tons of choices depending on your child’s interests.• Classroom & homeschool friendly: Teachers, parents, and librarians will love how easily these fit into literature units or reading goals. What to know• These are abridged versions, so they’re not meant to replace the full classics — they’re a starting point to help build comprehension and confidence.• Some books feel more simplified than others, depending on the original text’s complexity.OverallThe Classic Starts series is an excellent stepping stone into the world of classic literature. Whether you’re encouraging independent reading or introducing famous stories during Literature Day at school, these books make classic literature fun, friendly, and approachable for young readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Classic Literature"

P.P. · December 31, 2018

I read this from start to finish, and it's one book I will always re-read. One thing to add, maybe more on Aurthur's childhood. But, other than that it's the best! Read this! It's about King Aurthur.

2.0 out of 5 stars Meh.

A. · November 15, 2025

This is recommended with IEW but I think it is too summarized. The character development is lacking. Reading it feels like listening to a small child tell you their dream. And then, and then, and then. Recommend the Usborne graphic novel for a still simplified version instead.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting stories, good for kids, seems like it's missing something

B.M. · January 13, 2022

The stories are fun and interesting, but it ends abruptly. It never tells us what finally happened to Arthur. A young kid will not mind this, but older kids and adults may be bothered by this.

For my son,
