Teaching High School Science Through Inquiry and Argumentation

Description:

Proven ways to teach next generation science!

The numbers are in and the pressure is on. The U.S′s lead in science is very much at risk. If we′re to help ensure our students achieve scientific literacy, we need to take a critical look at what′s working and what isn′t. One thing we know for certain: inquiry and argumentation are key, and the single-best resource on the subject is Teaching High School Science Through Inquiry and Argumentation.

Devoted to Grades 9–12, this new edition of Douglas Llewellyn′s ground-breaking text aligns the four key elements of effective science education: scientific literacy, inquiry, argumentation, and the nature of science. Fully revised, the second edition features

  • Content that addresses the new direction of science standards
  • Exceptional coverage of scientific argumentation
  • Enhanced chapters on assessment and classroom management
  • Questioning techniques that promote the most learning
  • Activities that emphasize making claims and citing evidence
  • New examples of inquiry investigations
  • New approaches to traditional labs
  • Case studies and vignettes that model exemplary science instruction

With its standards-based content, there′s no better resource to help you elevate your teaching to meet the call for instructional reform.

Douglas Llewellyn teaches science education courses at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York. Previously, he was the K–12 Director of Science at the Rochester City School District, a junior high school principal, and a middle school science teacher. His books include Inquire Within: Implementing Inquiry-Based Science Standards in Grades 3–8 and Differentiated Science Inquiry, both published by Corwin.

"Llewellyn′s approach supports educators in realizing the central role argumentation plays in helping students make defensible connection between claims, data, evidence, and explanations. Not only is this a timely publication, but one that is sure to be well-used."

"This books in a valuable resource for advancing the scientific practices in the Next Generation Science Standards. Dr. Llewellyn′s approach to situating argumentation into inquiry-based teaching and learning, will support teacher educators in realizing the central role argumentation plays in helping students make defensible connection between claims, data, evidence, and explanations. Not only is this a timely publication, but one that is sure to be well-used." -- Page Keeley Published On: 2012-07-05

"Like his first edition, this book is essential reading for both new and veteran science teachers. With the publication of the new AP Biology curriculum and its inquiry based labs, as well as the soon to come Next Generation Science Standards, it has never been more important to integrate inquiry into our classrooms." -- James Dixon Published On: 2012-07-16

"This book is a comprehensive resource to aid teachers who are interested in initiating a ′student–centered′ classroom and improving scientific literacy of their students in an effort to meet national science standards." -- NSTA Recommends, February 2013 Published On: 2013-02-28

I have asked my school to provide the science teachers Professional Development using this book. I started reading it alone, but it is really intended for group discussions. Excellent examples and materials to get started.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very detailed

It has everything you ever wanted to know about how to teach inquiry, scientific argumentation, or both along with case studies illustrating what each example would look like. The reading is a bit dry and generally I do it in shifts, but other than that, it is a bible for questions on how to implement inquiry. I especially enjoy the case studies, they are very illustrating. This is the 3rd book of the authors I have read and the 2nd I have bought.

Teaching High School Science Through Inquiry and ArgumentationChanges in education are coming fast and furious and with this latest edition of Douglas Llewellyn's best-selling book, he is at the forefront of helping science educators understand the importance placed on argumentation in the newly revised science standards and how argumentation is a natural link in the deployment of inquiry learning. The book is practical, full of examples and case studies directly applicable to the high school classroom setting and features an extensive annotated resource section. Although the author cites research as well as frequent references to A Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards, the text is engaging with carefully placed light moments of humor that educators can appreciate. The author's teaching experience, enthusiasm, and advocacy for student-centered learning are evident in the text. The teaming up of inquiry and argumentation to help foster 21st century critical thinking abilities in students is thought-provoking. This is a book that you will not only read but use frequently, tapping into its case studies and tips on how, in the face of testing and assessment pressures, inquiry, with the addition of argumentation, is a practice worth adopting.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of several good guides available

P.B. · April 22, 2016

One of several good guides available. One fact that's overlooked by this and other authors is that teachers are very rarely afforded class periods which are long enough to develop good inquiry/argumentation scenarios. Just can't be done effectively in only 40 minutes, nor even four or five consecutive 40 minute periods, as they're usually so fragmented. But the approach is still worth working toward.

3.0 out of 5 stars Inquiry Resource

J.S. · October 15, 2015

I agree that inquiry should be a focus of high school science teachers and most likely many other high school teachers when they are presenting material to students; however, I believe that the author is a bit radical in the way he presents how often we should use inquiry. I believe there is a balance that every teacher should meet that includes inquiry into their lesson planning. The book was insightful, but not always the easiest to read.
