Description:

About this item:

What if your clothing could change color to complement your skin tone, respond to your racing heartbeat, or connect you with a loved one from afar?

Welcome to the world of shoes that can dynamically shift your height, jackets that display when the next bus is coming, and neckties that can nudge your business partner from across the room. Whether it be for fashion, function, or human connectedness, wearable electronics can be used to design interactive systems that are intimate and engaging.

Make: Wearable Electronics is intended for those with an interest in physical computing who are looking to create interfaces or systems that live on the body. Perfect for makers new to wearable tech, this book introduces you to the tools, materials, and techniques for creating interactive electronic circuits and embedding them in clothing and other things you can wear.

Each chapter features experiments to get you comfortable with the technology and then invites you to build upon that knowledge with your own projects. Fully illustrated with step-by-step instructions and images of amazing creations made by artists and professional designers, this book offers a concrete understanding of electronic circuits and how you can use them to bring your wearable projects from concept to prototype.

Whooot Whooot. Very clear pics and several web sources to visit for more info are included. I subscribe to MAKE magazine and pre-ordered the print (not kindle) version when I saw that it would soon be available. Didn't disappoint me. Love it Love it Love it. It's an easy read. If you know almost nothing of electronics you can figure out what she's saying (I'm an engineer...but you don't have to be one)... and with very little investment you too can become a "maker" -- if you want to see what's out there, visit a Maker Faire -- they are held in Michigan (Ann Arbor, Detroit), the West Coast, Atlanta...all over. And check out instructables online too -- you'll find many examples of embedded electronics in clothing. This book is probably the best "How-To" I've ever read. Get it, and you won't be disappointed. I promise.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book that inspires the creative spirit

This is a very good book that establishes a solid foundation knowledge wise to help bring creative ideas to life. I especially liked that this book included how to use el wire and tape to really make your wearable electronics to life. For those of us who live near the Blackrock Desert, that’s pretty valuable information when Burning Man fires up. Most of all and more importantly this book provides a chance to teach my students something valuable in a context that inspires them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to wearables covering a variety of techniques

D.B. · June 15, 2016

A good introduction to wearables covering a variety of techniques, sensors and boards. A good "idea" generator book. The author's experience as a faculty shows through as a well written "textbook" or "lab manual". Recommended as a first book on wearables.

Kate explanations goes from the basics to the more advanced. Her book was very useful to me because I was interested in creating wearable clothes and I could understand the "how tos" as well as the the difficulties I could possible get into. There are easy and not so easy projects propositions

I think the topic is interresting however not sure where it will go. The book was well written but left me wondering about the value of wearable electroinics beyond the looks. I was expecting more insight into how to apply this as a technology that interfaces with the people wearing the electronics. Maybe their will be more to come as others discover how to use this technology?

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of great ideas

A.K. · December 29, 2014

This book covers a wide range of wearable electronics concepts and provides lots of ideas for projects and experiments you can try.

1.0 out of 5 stars This is an electronics classroom text book

A.C. · February 11, 2025

I bought the book because of the word "Wearable" in it's title. I thought the book would portray a fashion, apparel and clothing perspective. It doesn't. 90% (or more) of the book is computer science and electronics based. I skimmed the computer/electronics pages and they are informative. The clothing/apparel pages are rudimentary. The title of the book is needs to change.

Beautiful, fun to read and informative

It showcases some really interesting projects from makers everywhere and left me with a bunch of new techniques and tons of inspiration!

Love this book!

This is a great book to start if you don't know much about electronics. I'm from a design background and know little to do with electronics but have found this book really helpful with my first wearables project. Great present for someone crafty :)

para iniciarse

X. · May 15, 2015

excelente libro para adentrarse en la electrónica digitalexplica varios proyectos desde el principio aunque no profundiza en la parte teóricaes eminentemente un libro práctico muy sugerente

Everything you want to know about wereable

G.S. · November 7, 2014

A complete manual about wearable electronics with Arduino and Adafruit board.Materials, tecnique, solutions, projects and other topic to begin with and dive into wearable circuits.Kindle edition has some little inconsistencies in layout and miss colour in photo (obviously). It makes reading just a bit less enjoyable.Anyway, a "must have" for wearable.

Exactly what I was looking for!

Description says it all. This book is like a school text book, easy to read, easy to understand. This really covers the electronic side, you should already have a basic knowledge of sewing.
