5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent reintroduction to painting in acrilics.

C.Z. · September 25, 2025

First glance at the book, it turns to cover everything. Flash back to art school days, from taking care of the art tools to drawing and painting techniques. What you don't find is video, or reference to it. However it is expected, we lack of that many years ago. I love the book and is a perfect reintroduction to the art of painting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just buy it

Each lesson is short and gets right to the point. If you are naturally artistic and just want to get to the lesson without dragging on, then this is the book for you. Each painting no matter the complexity is about four steps. It is important therefore to start with the first lesson and build skills before moving on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cool book for the clueless

Having just started some paint and wine classes I searched around for a general guide for painting with acrylics to answer all my questions and provide instructions on how to do different tasks. Lee's concept of the awkward stage in the creation of a painting was like shining a spotlight into a dark and dismal corner. My first two efforts had left me wondering what I was doing there beside drinking wine. Both pictures turn out to be textbook examples of the "awkward stage" and offered directions to turn disaster into a nice start. I now know that I can have fun learning to paint and will some day be able to have a decent painting of my own hanging on the wall. I think that that anyone using this book with a bit of hard work can produce work that they will be proud to show people. I have ordered a printed copy to go with my kindle copy since I think that acrylic paint could damage the screen. This is a great book to get started with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just all you want to know about picture acrylics.

Excellent for someone just starting with acrylics. The author starts with the basic aspects of art but also explains more complicated subjects such as portraits later in the book. Very comprehensive but also easy to follow. I have enjoyed following her projects so far. You will learn step by step to paint still life, landscapes, animals and people. I'm looking forward to learning more!

Good instruction on realism in acrylics

L. · June 8, 2021

This is very similar to Lee Hammond's books on realistic drawing with pencils and colored pencils. It takes a very structured and linear approach to teaching how to use acrylics. That's just what I need. I have worked through about half of the examples and have found this to be a good book for learning acrylics.
