5.0 out of 5 stars Anyone can learn great lessons from this book
This book not only gives an inside look and insight on family dynamics and addiction issues, but it helps us see what lies under much of our unhappiness, anxiety, fear, frustration, and anger that commonly simmer beneath the surface as we go through life. While it discusses childhood wounds, life's traumas, hardships, family chaos, and religious disillusionment, it also describes resiliency, healing, and love that shines through our true selves. It goes well beyond discussions of parenting and children. One line from the end of Chapter 19 seems to sum up one of the great messages of the book..."Once unstuck from our history, we are then able to be present in our lives." This book helps us see how stuck we are and the freedom and release of being willing to be unstuck. It shows us the consequences of the unresolved issues we carry with us through our lives, and how they are passed on through generations. The author does this with humor, honesty about her own life, and multiple real-life stories that reflect elements of all our lives. She is no-nonsense and down to earth, but I didn't feel preached at, judged, or confronted when I read it. I am quite academic and scientific, and I don't have children or substance abuse problems, but this book had tremendous lessons and insights for me. It seemed to be able to reach out to me in a way that many textbooks, spiritual texts, and self-help books cannot do. I believe this was due to the fact that the author was able to take deeply personal and emotional messages and present them in a captivating, humorous, moving, sometimes tragic, and raw way...yet still keeping it simple and ultimately up-lifting. Great book!
4.0 out of 5 stars Not Like My Mother: Becoming a Sane Parent After Growing Up in a Crazy Family
By: Irene TomkinsonPublished By: AuthorhouseAge Recommended: AdultRating: 4Review:"Not Like My Mother: Becoming a Sane Parent After Growing Up in a Crazy Family" by Irene Tomkinson was a autobiography... Memoir, a nonfiction that was a insightful read. This 'holistic therapist' Irene Tomkinson really breaks it down to the reader giving us a 'enjoyable read that she "draws upon experiences from her intimate life journey and decades of professional knowledge." You will find from the read this is not only about 'parenting' but also for the "non-parents loaded with heartfelt experiences and nonjudgmental guidance about learning to unconditionally love yourself and others." This was a powerful book in that it will leave you with many new thoughts and be strengthened as well as challenged and definitely encouraged.I loved this quote: This is so beautifully said...."We teach what we need to learn. And we teach it until we get it.I finally got it. Now it is your turn. Go find your own story, claim it, appreciate it, don't deny it, and above all have compassion for it. In the end, what else do we have but our own story with all of its lessons and blessings?"Now, "Not Like My Mother: Becoming a Sane Parent After Growing Up in a Crazy Family" may not help all but it does have a good self help guide that may be of help to your becoming even a better parent. You get a real lesson in how not to let your issues become your child's issue and even how to even avoid becoming 'defined' by your own past childhood hurts. Would I recommend? YES!
5.0 out of 5 stars Wow great insightful story that made me think of thing differently!
WOWI really learned so much reading the book...about me. Life is a journey and a journey that is our own! This book hit home as I am transitioning to having adult children. I wanted to provide my children everything. Not material things but security, unconditional love and roots that would help them flourish as they reached adulthood. I wanted to pave the way for them to be independent and confident in their abilities and talents. I believe my husband and I really tried to do this. This book though opened my eyes that My addiction was work and perfection. I was so busy trying to fill the voids in their lives that were truly my own.Recently one of my daughters started to struggle with depression and eating disorder, the other depression and anxiety. These events turned our world upside down. So I am starting over, trying to determine how to support my daughters and our whole family through this journey of life. This book has gotten me to think about me and how to stay centered during these times. This book helped me see my role, how my history and running from my fears of not being good enough has impacted their lives. It helped me identify My addiction to work, always being busy and perfection. I am not taking blame, but understanding my part in our current family situation. I grew up in a stable family with two parent who loved me and my sisters. There were struggles as i grew up but it was a very stable environment to be raised in. Thus you do not need to be a child of abuse or neglect to gain great insight from this very well written book. It is not a self help book but a book that takes you on your own journey as you ponder questions that face you. Thank you for written this book.
3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, more of a self help book
This book kept my attention for the most part but I would not recommend the entire book to friends. There were excerpts from this book that were so enlightening but I seemed to have to dredge through many pages to get to these points. I thought the book was somewhat depressing and I was expecting a humorous or at least uplifting book about raising kids. The author came from a dysfunctional family only to find that her own daughters didn't seem to like her very much while raising them. She did learn quite a bit (do not raise your children like you wish you had been raised because we all have different needs) and attempted to teach it to her readers.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great read
This book hit home and opened my eyes to things I never thought of before. I have learned to be there for my family for their needs and just be present, not fix their problems.
Helpful and interesting
I like how the author takes us on her journey. I think many can relate, especially those with daughters. good read
Not a mom but this helped me in my own way
Although I'm not a mom yet this book connected with me and related very closely to the story of my mom and I. Helped me understand where all this crazy came from, why her and I have acted certain ways over the years. Helped me have a deeper understanding of what my mom went through and how she suffered watching me go through it and how it made everything even more crazy! Made me question alot about myself and opened new perspectives because of that. I was having a pretty bad couple of days and after reading this I started to feel better. I feel like I've been given the tools I've been looking for to start dealing with life instead of running from it. It might just be that it was so personally touching to me but I would still recommend this book for mother and/or daughter.
