“For those looking to walk with kids of all ages through the message and hope of the gospel, this resource does not miss. With a rich theological framework, effective discussion points, and vibrant artwork, your family will love this just as much as mine does.”
―Amy Gannett, Writer and Bible Teacher, The Bible Study Schoolhouse; Founder, Tiny Theologians
“What a fantastic resource for helping families read, learn, and love God’s word together! We look forward to making use of this book around the table at our home.”
―Jon Nielson, Senior Pastor, Christ Presbyterian Church, Wheaton, Illinois
“The Biggest Story has proven to be a favorite in our house, and I know our family will be blessed by its devotional companion. Trustworthy in content with engaging questions and illustrations, The Biggest Story Family Devotional will point you and your kids to Jesus and his saving gospel.”
―Kristen Wetherell, author, Help for the Hungry Soul and the For the Bible Tells Me So board book series
“This new resource combines the beautiful art that we’ve come to know and love from The Biggest Story suite of resources with devotional readings and questions that expertly equip parents for the all-important work of discipling their household. These 104 Bible stories do as much to instruct as they do to inspire a family to know and love God. This devotional is the perfect tool to set the word of God firmly as the cornerstone of family conversations and to do it consistently.”
―Adam Griffin, Lead Pastor, Eastside Community Church, Dallas, Texas; Host, The Family Discipleship Podcast
“One of the most encouraging developments in the church today is the rapidly growing number of books on family worship. No family can excuse themselves from the practice of family worship on the basis that they could not find practical, accessible, and fully complete resources. The Biggest Story Family Devotional is one such tool. This book will help parents lead their children in meaningful family worship every day.”
―Donald S. Whitney, Professor of Biblical Spirituality and John H. Powell Professor of Pastoral Ministry, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; author, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life; Praying the Bible; and Family Worship
“I highly recommend The Biggest Story Family Devotional for those looking for an easy and engaging resource for family devotionals. This wonderful book will inspire readers of all ages to deepen their love and understanding of God through his word. I’m excited to use it with my family and share it with my friends!”

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Family Devotional
Engaging questions and appreciate the access to videos. Really like that it is different from the Biggest Story Curriculum making it a good supplement for families that want to go through devotionals the tie into what the kids are learning at church.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
We have loved this as a family. The kids love the videos and the discussion is fitting for all ages and simple. Everything in this series is fantastic but this has been a great addition for family worship with young boys
5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Smart Work
Once, while I was stationed at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, I had to take up a position on top of the elementary school on the air base. It was nighttime, super cold, windy, and in the freezing rain. My job was to be on the lookout for bandits who would cut the wire fence around the base, sneak in, and steal whatever they could lay their hands on to go sell on the black market. Well, thankfully those days for me are long gone, but being on the lookout for little goodies, rather than thieves, is what I enjoy doing. I’m especially on the watch for resources to aid Christian families in drawing nearer to God. So, I was pleased when Crossway allowed me to obtain and check out “The Biggest Story Family Devotional”. This 432-page clothbound hardback is put together by Crossway, Douglas Sean O’Donnell, senior VP of Bible editorial at Crossway, and illustrated by Don Clark, cofounder of Invisible Creature. It has 104 stories (52 from the Old Testament and 52 from the New) that guide moms, dads, grandparents, and kids through the Bible from Genesis through Revelation. If followed the way it’s set up, a family has two full years of Bible reading and reflection. This devotional is designed to be used with several age groups in mind, parents with younger children; parents with older kids; and dinner table devotions. Working through these stories and reflection questions show that the designers intended to help families keep their family worship/devotional time around 10 to 20 minutes each night (or less). That’s a smart move. The format also has a few different approaches. There is a QR Code at the beginning of each story that takes readers to a short, 5-minute online summary video that is artfully animated. But if parents are low-tech (like me) they can simply use the related reading from “The Biggest Story Bible Storybook”. Then there are five daily readings from Scripture with very short reflection questions, and a “Gospel Connection” segment at the end, with a suggested prayer. It is a very easy, uncomplicated format. The videos and devotional sections are thoughtfully put together in ways that get the point without going too far for kids. For example, in “Story 47” which covers Hosea 1-3, Hosea’s wife is simply noted as “a bad woman who would be unfaithful in their marriage” (185). The video retelling tastefully goes along with this, while visually impressing on viewers the distortedness of Gomer’s choice and actions. I’m sure inquisitive little minds will be spurred to ask questions, without getting off into the weeds. For some folks, the one drawback will be pictures about Jesus. Such as in “Story 77: The King Comes” which is recounting our Lord’s coming to Jerusalem, the attending picture is of a man riding a donkey surrounded by a crowd waving and holding onto palm fronds. Though I personally do not consider it a violation of the second commandment, I am sensitive to those who might. In the end, this devotional looks like a useful, and faithful, resource for families as they all draw nearer to the Lord. And if your church is using the “The Biggest Story” curriculum for Sunday School, it all works together to keep what they’re learning at church and at home on the same page and supplementing each other. A very smart idea. Douglas Sean O’Donnell introduces this work with this overarching theme: “God calls all Christians – young and old – to learn, love, and live out his holy word. The Biggest Story Family Devotional is designed to help achieve that goal.” It seems to me that this devotional hits it’s intended mark, and highly recommend the work.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Engaging
The highest compliment I can give this book is that I had to ask my children for a break because they didn’t want me to stop reading! The Biggest Story Family Devotional has kept our family devotions fresh, and I look forward to spending this time with my children together with the Lord. With 104 devotionals focused on exciting Bible stories, this book has been perfect for my kids, ages 3-5. They absolutely love it! Each story includes child-friendly discussion questions, and I’ve been able to easily adapt the material for our family. The Snake and the Snake CrusherWhat I appreciate most is how the book presents the story of the Bible as a battle — with a snake and a snake crusher. My boys especially responded to this powerful narrative, as it brought the Bible to life in a way they had never experienced before. The full-color illustrations by Don Clark are stunning, and my daughter loves flipping through the pages to find her favorite story, Daniel in the Lion's Den. I even broke from our usual chronological reading because she was so eager for us to read it!Wonderful and EngagingA unique feature of this book is the accompanying video for each devotion. These short, high-quality videos with motion graphics, music, and storytelling have been a hit with my kids, who love watching them on repeat. The Biggest Story Family Devotional is a wonderful and engaging way for families to connect with God’s Word.I received a media copy of The Biggest Story Family Devotional and this is my honest review.
5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice modern Family Bible Devotional
The first thing I want to say is that this Biggest Story Family Devotional is meant to be used with on-line videos provided by the publisher. That is okay for younger folks and they may like that a lot. However, grandparents, if they are like my parents, may not like the technology part of this--or they may. I mention it because my parents would NOT do that part. Getting that out of the way, the rest of the book is just wonderful. Now, if someone has the Biggest bible storybook, a screen-free adaptation is suggested of reading from there to go along with the book, and that my parents would do.This book is large and measures about 6 by 9 inches in size and is 2 inches thick. It is beautiful aesthetically. I love the artwork on the end papers and throughout the book. In the front of the book, there is an introduction on how to use the book and encouraging flexibility in your habits. I like that. No one needs a perfectionist mindset with family devotions, in my opinion. There is a 2-page spread after the introduction giving ideas on how to use the devotional, which could be helpful as you consider the options that best fit your family. The book is divided into 7 parts: The Pentateuch, History, Poetry, The Prophets, The Gospels, Acts and Epistles, and Revelation. Each reading lists the Bible verses covered that you can read and the questions to ask, with space to write, if you so desire. This is such a beautifully bound and illustsrated book, that honestly, I have to write in a notebook as it is too pretty for me to write in, but that is me.I received a copy of this book from the publisher through the Bolo Vine Program. All opinions within this review are my own.
I want to love it but…
I have mixed feelings about this book. I really want to love it. I appreciate how KD teaches big theological truths in ways kids can understand and remember. However, the editing seems rushed/inadequate. There have been bible references that seem incomplete (only tell such a small part of the story that we need to fill in the gaps for it to make sense to the kids) and even bible references that are not in the Bible at all. (I will attach photos)I imagine this book needs to be re-edited and then reprinted with proper references.
