5.0 out of 5 stars practical wisdom for any life
What a great lesson that the only way to have true life change is to replace our old affections for new ones. We can't just try to convince ourselves that the temporal is fleeting and unworthy or our time and talent but we must be persuaded that a new life built on the Lord is worth living and better. If we don't believe a new life is better with Him, the temptations and draw of our old one will persist and then we are doomed to remain in that unsatisfying loop. Highly recommend.

Chalmers is an expert of many things, but most notably of the human heart. He will show you a better way.
5.0 out of 5 stars A Better Strategy
My resolve to read more old books in 2021 perfectly coincided with Crossway’s decision to publish The Expulsive Power of a New Affection by Thomas Chalmers as part of its Short Classics series. A Scottish pastor, Chalmers based his classic sermon on I John 2:15:“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”He posed the question, “How shall the human heart be freed from its love for the world?” and then suggested two possible routes to freedom:Embrace the unworthiness of the world as a foundation for hope;Awaken a stronger affection for God to “expel” the former affection.Chalmers argued for #2 based on “the constitution of our natures,” or the way the human heart works: “Such is the grasping tendency of the human heart, that it must have a something to lay hold of–and which, if wrested away without the substitution of another something in its place, would leave a void and a vacancy as painful to the mind as hunger is to the natural system.”Join me, then, in pondering a better strategy in the fight against sin than you may have employed in the past. Instead of battling one sin with another (gluttony with vanity; sloth with pride), let’s ask God for a stronger affection, a greater desire to know and to love God, to experience the blessings of obedience as our greatest treasure and highest goal. Many thanks to Crossway for providing this book to facilitate my review, which is, of course, offered freely and with honesty.

Maybe you're not like me, and you already know all about Thomas Chalmers. I've recently found more people who know the name Thomas Chalmers yet really do not know much about him. As a result, when I picked up a new book by Crossway, putting to text one of his most excellent sermons, I was captivated instantly by his biography.Chalmers was a man held in esteem for his aid in developing the Free Church of Scotland. While having experience as a pastor, he also held some prominent positions as a professor of moral philosophy (University of St. Andrews) and theology (University of Edinburgh). However, by his own testimony, he did not even become a believer until he was already serving in the pastorate.Even with limited knowledge of Thomas Chalmers, Crossway's selection of his sermon "Expulsive Power of a New Affection" merits appreciation. This sermon is one of the first three chosen to release their short classics series, a series that desires to preserve short historical pieces and transmit them to the next generation. Also part of the initial release are "Encouragement for the Depressed" by Charles Spurgeon and "Heaven Is A World of Love" by Jonathan Edwards. This particular piece, "Expulsive Power of a New Affection," was a sermon given by Chalmers on the text of 1 John 2:15. In the introduction, John Piper calls this an illumination, not an exposition of the text. After reading it, I can think of no better description. Chalmers asserts that "the love of the world cannot be expunged by a mere demonstration of the world's worthless." Instead, to disengage the heart from the world, that same heart must be fastened to a love for something else . . . in this case our Lord. This is not a wrong premise, just a premise that fails to be heralded or understood in today's cultural Christianity. In that regard, Crossway's endeavor to revitalize this sermon is needed. There is no doubt, though: this is a hard book to read. While only about 34 pages, it's a laborious process to understand some of Chalmer's points. To think that this was originally a sermon generates a level of respect to those of former times who not only listened to it but were able to process it at the same time! The "Expulsive Power of a New Affection" is a concept that many of us are aware of in the life of new believers. However, Chalmers brings to light the need to consider this throughout our Christian life, and despite the attention the text requires for reading, I would call it a necessary book on one's shelf.
