Made for Friendship: The Relationship That Halves Our Sorrows and Doubles Our Joys

Description:

God made you for friendship.

Friendship is one of the deepest pleasures of life. But in our busy, fast-paced, mobile world, we’ve lost this rich view of friendship and instead settled for shallow acquaintances based on little more than similar tastes or shared interests.

Helping us recapture a vision of true friendship, pastor Drew Hunter explores God’s design for friendship and what it really looks like in practice―giving us practical advice to cultivate the kinds of true friendships that lead to true and life-giving joy.

Review

“‘We talk about community but not friendship.’ Drew Hunter is right, and in Made for Friendship he fills the church’s gap with deep theological truths and helpful practical tools regarding friendship. I’m grateful for this resource!”
Christine Hoover, author, Messy Beautiful Friendship and Searching for Spring

“Drew Hunter will capture you with his compelling vision of friendship. Beautifully written, these pages are filled with fresh insight and practical wisdom. Reading this book will ignite your desire to be a better friend and to savor the joys of friendship.”
Colin S. Smith, President, Open the Bible; Pastor Emeritus, The Orchard, Arlington Heights, Illinois

“Many contemporary realities work against our attempts to establish and cultivate deep, lasting friendships. Add to that our sinful tendencies that lead us to isolate ourselves, and it’s no wonder many of us are lonely and, dare I say, friendless. In Made for Friendship, Drew Hunter reminds us of the basic human need for true friendships. And through historical, biblical, and practical wisdom, he equips us to pursue and foster the kinds of friendships that will half our sorrows and double our joys. I, for one, am thankful for this much-needed reminder!”
Juan R. Sanchez, Senior Pastor, High Pointe Baptist Church, Austin, Texas; author, Seven Dangers Facing Your Church

“Meaningful friendships may be one of the most overlooked areas of church health in our time. If we are going to make disciples, the task will bring with it richness of relationships. This book calls us to relational depth for the sake of our own souls, and for the sake of the gospel.”
Matthew Boswell, hymn writer; Pastor, The Trails Church, Celina, Texas

A book full of wisdom! Loved this book so much we bought it for our friends!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on friendship.

R.P. · January 9, 2020

Indianapolis pastor Drew Hunter has written one of the best of a rare breed of Christian books on friendship. He writes in a very readable way, as if he were teaching a church school class.“God saves us to befriend us,” he declares. He brings a good dose of strong theology to bear, in contrast to books that focus on practical tips to become a better friend. Hunter even has footnotes. He ties friendship in with the trinity, sin, union with Christ, redemption, eternity and heaven. He also includes comments from Jonathan Edwards and Francis Schaeffer. The book is much easier to read than Edwards or Schaeffer but still profound.Russ Pulliam

5.0 out of 5 stars What I Needed

If I could have written a book on friendship, this is the book I would have wanted to write. This book challenged me and encouraged me. It made me very happy as I considered good friends and made me very sad as I considered close friends who have become distant. It made me long for heaven, it made me consider Jesus better as—my Friend.Drew Hunter did not just consider the topic of friendship or find good quotes on friendship but was able to pull on the reader's personal experience to see the need, the desire, and the hope of good friendship. Not only that, Hunter turns out to be a pretty good Bible teacher. He brought theology and Bible exegesis together to show the divinely ordained nature of friendship, its salvific purposes, and its end in worship.I cannot endorse this book more highly. It's a "must read."

Great book! I read it with a group of friends and going through it that way helped deepen our friendships and understand one another and where we came from and why we act/react in different ways. Highly recommend! Seller must have spilled air freshener on the book as I have to store it in a ziplock and can still smell it through the bag!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great to encourage deep friendship

L.H. · April 13, 2019

I read this along with several other women as an informal book club and a way to deepen and better understand our friendship. This book definitely delivered. It was rooted in Scripture and clarified the great importance of friendship to the human experience. I like the practical application suggestions and discussion questions with each chapter. The conclusion- the Great Friend we have in Jesus- is not trite but points to the incredible value of the relationship we have with Christ. Would definitely recommend this, especially to read in the context of a group or with another individual.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book

C.D. · April 10, 2020

What a beautiful book. I loved it. Not only does it celebrate friendship, something that I think can be neglected in life, but it correlates the love of God and his desire for friendship with us to our earthly friendships. I came away with a new celebration of friendship and awe that God would actually want to be my friend. Through Scripture and the writings of many respected Christian authors (ancient and modern) Hunter shows us how we truly were made for friendship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Life changing book!

J.A. · April 5, 2024

This book is the answer to the pandemic of loneliness and isolation and pride that plagues humanity. So few of us have true friends because we are poor friends to others. And yet God has blessed us with His friendship through Christ and equipped us to be a friend to others. Hunter takes the “just” out of “just friends” and replaces it with “life-giving.”

Best book!

De mis libros favoritos

C.d.A. · August 10, 2023

Friendship is a command. Read this book and find out why.

R. · October 13, 2019

A really thoughtful and thought provoking book. We all know that friendship takes work, and it is easy to slip into the mindset of why bother, especially as we get older. The biggest surprise for me, and I thought I knew a reasonable amount of Scripture, is that friendship is commanded of us as Christians. This book made this clear with its well chosen Bible passages and relevant true-life anecdotes.

Teológico e prático na medida!
