The Gospel Comes with a House Key: Practicing Radically Ordinary Hospitality in Our Post-Christian World

Description:

Winner of the 2019 Christianity Today Book Award in the Christian Living & Discipleship Category

"This book is going to shake us all up in the most wonderfully destabilizing way.” ―Ray Ortlund, Lead Pastor, Immanuel Church, Nashville, Tennessee

What did God use to draw a radical, committed unbeliever to himself? Did God take her to an evangelistic rally? Or, since she had her doctorate in literature, did he use something in print? No, God used an invitation to dinner in a modest home, from a humble couple who lived out the gospel daily, simply, and authentically.

With this story of her conversion as a backdrop, Rosaria Butterfield invites us into her home to show us how God can use this same “radical, ordinary hospitality” to bring the gospel to our lost friends and neighbors. Such hospitality sees our homes as not our own, but as God’s tools for the furtherance of his kingdom as we welcome those who look, think, believe, and act differently from us into our everyday, sometimes messy lives―helping them see what true Christian faith really looks like.

Review

“Artfully woven into the fabric of who we are, each of us possesses an urgency to be included, an ache to be known, and a longing to be welcomed. In this book, Rosaria describes how the good news of the gospel not only meets our deepest needs but transforms us into cohosts who invite others to meet Jesus. Rosaria Butterfield’s enthusiasm for the unparalleled expression of hospitality―the Son of God on the cross drawing all men to himself―is what energizes her to practice radically ordinary hospitality and invite us all to do the same. This book will stir your imagination to generate creative ways to incorporate radically ordinary hospitality into your own life as well.”
Gloria Furman, author, Labor with Hope and Missional Motherhood

“God strongly advances his cause by raising up prophetic voices of fresh insight, bold words, and powerful impact. Rosaria Butterfield is just such a voice for God in our time. The Gospel Comes with a House Key is Rosaria’s heart reaching out to our hearts, calling us to love our neighbors with sacrificial hospitality. This book is going to shake us all up in the most wonderfully destabilizing way.”
Ray Ortlund, President, Renewal Ministries

“This book isn’t for those who want to live the comfortable Christian life. Rosaria proves there is no such thing. She has a unique way of blending personal story and theological teaching that challenges the reader to engage in areas of both agreement and disagreement. I was sharpened well in both cases.”
Aimee Byrd, author, Theological Fitness and No Little Women

“It’s easier than ever to live in communities with no real sense of community. Neighbors don’t know neighbors, and our lives are lived online rather than on the front porch. Rosaria Butterfield demonstrates how living a life of radically ordinary hospitality can allow strangers to become neighbors, and, by God’s power, those neighbors can become part of God’s family. I couldn’t put this book down―it’s compelling, challenging, and convicting.”
Melissa B. Kruger, author; Vice President of Discipleship Programming, The Gospel Coalition

“One cannot spend any time at all with Rosaria Butterfield without a renewed sense of how good the good news really is. This book is a needed call to the church to model the hospitality of our Lord. As our culture faces a crisis of loneliness, this is the book we need. The book will inspire you and leave you with a notebook filled with ideas for how to practically engage your neighbors with the welcome of the gospel.”
Russell Moore, Editor in Chief, Christianity Today; author, Losing Our Religion

“The biblical call to show hospitality is one of the most overlooked or misunderstood commands in Scripture. We either ignore it or mistake it for what our culture calls ‘entertaining.’ Rosaria Butterfield gives us a vision of hospitality that pulses with the beating heart of the gospel itself. We know a God who sought us out, took us in, made us family, and seated us at his table. It’s a vision that is bracing and attractive. It daunts us, but it shouldn’t. I wonder how different our homes, churches, and culture would look if we took it to heart.”
Sam Allberry, Associate Pastor, Immanuel Nashville, Tennessee; author, One with My Lord

“One of the hallmarks of the people of God is supposed to be hospitality. But in an age of commuter churches, towns disemboweled by shopping malls, and lives that are overscheduled and full of ceaseless activity, hospitality is something which, like true friendship, is at a premium. In this book, Rosaria Butterfield makes a bold case for putting hospitality back into the essential rhythm of the church’s daily life. She sets the bar very high―and there is plenty of room here for disagreement on some of the proposals and details―but the basic case, that church is to be a community marked by hospitality, is powerfully presented and persuasively argued.”

5.0 out of 5 stars The How and Why and Wow of Hospitality

L.O. · May 21, 2018

In a changing world where Christianity is losing credibility in so many ways, the only avenue for the gospel is quickly becoming authentic relationship. That's why when I saw this book, I could not order it fast enough. Rosaria comes alongside the reader and kindly and clearly walks through the multi-layered process of how to love a neighbor in this complicated society of ours. How does a relationship evolve from casual introductions while walking dogs to that same neighbor eventually crossing over the threshold and joining the family to eat a meal and linger long in conversation? Rosaria shows us how with compelling, victorious stories that underline what God does when we give Him room to work.By the time I read to the very last word of the Acknowledgements, I had been assured of the hope that nothing we do for our neighbors is wasted in the grand story God has for each of person involved, particularly if we don't give up praying, serving as opportunity arises, surrendering our reputations of association, and keeping our children in God's hands, not our own. Some reviewers said they didn't know what was so extraordinary about such a simple plan. This hospitality is extraordinary in two ways. First, the fact that she actually lives a lifestyle of hospitality to a wide variety of people is extraordinary in comparison to most of the rest of us. Second, such hospitality invites God to show up and what God does is always extraordinary. As much as I appreciate the book for showing me how to love my neighbor, what I love most about Rosaria is her repentant heart. One reviewer mistakenly said this book is about "Love the sinner; hate the sin." Rosaria specifically says, "...love the sinner and hate your own sin." (32) She is painfully aware of her own sin, repenting of it daily, as we all should be. Therefore, she does not see any distance between herself and any other image bearer of a holy God who also needs Jesus as much as she did. This fundamental biblical perspective allows her to draw near to all with the message of Jesus. He is all she has to offer. This is true for all of us, but Rosaria knows it.Rosaria is gutsy, brave, repentant and honest, and she practices radical hospitality with her neighbors daily. If you stare at verses like, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ (Mark 12:31) and don't know how to live that verse out on a practical level, or if you stare at this incredibly changed world and no longer have the skill set to engage with it, this is the next book to read.© 2018 by Oaks Ministries. 5.0 out of 5 stars Deftly weaving stories of her life into solid biblical teaching on love, grace

M.J.K. · June 4, 2018

The Gospel Comes With a House Key may be one of the most thought provoking books I have read in the last year (and I read a lot). It is part memoir, part biblical theology, part polemic about the use God wants to put our homes to. Deftly weaving stories of her life into solid biblical teaching on love, grace, mercy, personal sin, and, yes, hospitality Rosaria Butterfield kept me compulsively turning the pages. It’s not just that she is a deep thinker with a thorough grasp of how to convey ideas clearly and compellingly. She is an excellent story-teller who also is an excellent writer; and those two do not always go together. She drew me in to one story in particular that she did not finish until toward the end of the book, but rather than finding that frustrating it led me deeper into her broader story, and subtly, her broader argument that I need to radically rethink how I view my home and my time. After all it is all God’s and I am meant to find my ultimate joy in service to Him and in His love.Apparently my home can be a powerful tool for me to feel His love and to convey His love to others. Want to know exactly why? Want to see how that works out in the context on one family in one particular instance with broad application for all Christians? Then by all means I invite you to Butterfield home to eat with them, play with them, pray and read the Bible with them, to weep and struggle with them, just as they invite everyone they know to do the same.Thank you Rosaria. You’ve given me and my wife a lot to think about and a needed challenge; that actually looks like a lot of fun!

4.0 out of 5 stars An important book to read

C. · March 17, 2019

If you read this book be prepared to be stretched and convicted. Rosaria Butterfield has a very clear picture of her responsibility under the Great Commission. In “The Gospel Comes with a House Key” Butterfield sets forth a serious program for the role of home hospitality in the church. How can a follower of Christ be a light to the world if there is little to no interaction with one’s own neighbors? Butterfield shows the way. Additionally, Butterfield provides real life stories that demonstrate the power of hospitality as a means to share the gospel. These stories are messy and complicated and touching. These stories are masterfully told by Butterfield who, with an earned doctorate in English, is a gifted writer.I admire Rosaria Butterfield as a sister in Christ. I am challenged by her commitment and her tenacity. There are ways that I wish to change for the good as a result of reading this book. But I have one concern—-not a criticism, a concern. Butterfield is so committed to the ministry of hospitality and she is so single minded. But I wonder if her vision of hospitality is so radical that her message will be diminished by those who are overwhelmed by the way she does Christian hospitality. I certainly hope not. Because the church needs this vision, this discipline, this grace of hospitality to be incorporated into the life of the church. Butterfield’s theology is solid. Her motives are pure. Her advice is wise.It is my prayer that the Holy Spirit will use this book for the advancement of the gospel in our post Christian Era. Happy reading.

Best book on evangelism I have ever read

A.K. · October 16, 2018

Too often writing and teaching on evangelism is complicated or reductionist. Often there is a heavy focus on apologetics and it can all seem quite daunting. This book is simple yet profound. Be salt and light amongst your neighbours - whoever they are, whatever their background, whatever their beliefs. Love them for who they are, with the knowledge there is a loving God who longs to know them and change them. Be a safe person, provide a safe environment for people to be themselves, for them to share their secrets and longings and hurts.Every Christian can do this. You don't need to have done a course of apologetics, have a masters in Theology or know everything about other religions or worldviews. Every Christian has the love of God as part of their DNA and they can open their lives and homes and share that with those around them. Rosaria Butterfield shows us how this can be done and the wonderful, world changing impact that can have.Thankyou for writing this book and I pray that this gets into the hands of as many Christians as possible.

Hospitality. What do we know about that?As Christians we have a tendency to think of hospitality as having our fellow believers home for a cup of coffee and a chat. While this is good, there is certainly much more to hospitality. The author of this book was won to Christ through hospitality and has sought to practice it in her married life in many ways.I felt the book was a necessary wake up call, and included some helpful practical advice for a ministry of hospitality to our neighbours. My one caveat is that I find the author comes across as quite judgmental of others. She speaks against this, and yet demonstrates it at times. This meant that the audiobook grated once or twice on me. However, the central thesis of the book is certainly Biblical, and Butterfield has a wonderful ability to tell a story. I was certainly spiritually enriched by this book. Recommended.
