From Booklist

This Level 3 reader begins with just the right question for the intended audience: Who was Martin Luther King, Jr.? Then, young readers are asked to imagine living in a time when black and white children couldn’t swim in the same pools or attend the same schools. In nine sections (not numbered), the book, in bright visuals and engaging text, offers up information about Dr. King’s childhood, his studies, and, of course, his work on behalf of equal rights. There are 8 Awesome Facts about Dr. King, including this impressive stat: he gave 2,500 speeches during the last 11 years of his life. The large typeface and varied sentence structure is ideal for emergent readers, and the text is broken up frequently by stirring period photos, words to know, and a time line. A concluding quiz tests comprehension, and a pictorial glossary will help reinforce vocabulary. A graphically engaging introduction to a visionary who, luckily, left us his words to remember him by. This also offers kids the opportunity to become a Super Reader via an online rewards program. Grades 1-3. --Kelley, Ann

What a very nice book! I purchased this book so we can read and learn more about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., there are so many great facts and tidbits in this book, it really kept the kids interested the whole time. I also love how there are questions in the back of the book to ask the kids to make sure they understand and remember what they read. We are very happy with this book! My kids are 12 and 5, much of what went on in the book went over the five-year-olds head but my 12 year old understood everything and enjoyed it.

I bought this for my 4 year old son during Black History Month. It's written at his level, describes this time period in simple, clear, yet honest terms, and has interesting pictures. I love that it also shows the MLK Jr. monument in DC, as we will be taking a trip there soon, and he is excited to see the monument. I also got Each Kindess by Jacqueline Woodson, which is a great companion and conversation-starter.

This book from National Geographic is a superb work by author Kitson Jazynka about Martin Luther King Junior and even a young reader can understand and enjoy it without any assistance. The book has real life pictures, big colored text, side bars and sketches that keeps you glued till the end. It gives full information about Dr. King’s childhood, his studies, his struggle for equal rights of Blacks and Whites in the US. The life story of Dr King inspires readers to stand up for their rights and also tells that violence is not the way to make a change and our words have a great power with which we can change the thoughts of people in a peaceful way.The book also has an interesting quiz section in the end and is a must read for every school child.
