Taking place during the early 1900s after the Russo-Japanese war, we follow young war veteran Saichi Sugimoto who has supreme soldier and survivor skills. He is currently on a life threatening quest in the middle of a postwar gold rush involving a long-hidden fortune of gold and is determined to find it. When he gets caught in a bear attack, he gets help from an Ainu girl named Asirpa with strong huntress skills. As the two survive their attack, they will find themselves with some very powerful hunters who may have info about the fortune.It’s been ages since I found a good action-packed manga and “GK” is just so powerful and suspenseful. From start to finish, its war-themed survival lore and scenes of action definitely give off a thrilling postwar story of gold and survival. It is really all worth it to find this fortune of gold?, I’ll see. <b>A (100%/Outstanding)</b>

This manga is my second favorite only under Berserk. I keep referring to it as the Berserk of gag manga.I can't remember the last time I read anything that had me laugh so often. There is major story in here but the author is definitely a master of his craft. I knew I had to add these books to my collection.They're slightly larger than your average manga. It's really nice because you get more art on a page and it opens a lot easier.There's only about 5 or so books translated out at the moment so I would definitely recommend gathering them up as they come out.This story is definitely a masterpiece in the making.

This is a good series for anyone really. It has multiple genres and plenty of selling points. It is a viz sign series, so it's not exactly for younger children. It gets graphic on the gore side of things. The art is really great, and the story is well thought out. My copy arrived relatively fast and in tact.

I watched the anime adaptation of Golden Kamuy first, as it was available and I have a CR subscription. Afterwards, I knew I had to pick up the manga to see what I was missing. The manga is great, just as funny, delicious, and exciting as the anime, but packed with even more Asirpa faces, poo jokes, and side stories. Really glad I went ahead and started it; now I just wish they'd release the volumes in English a little faster.

This is my favorite ongoing series at the moment, and the Viz edition doesn't dissapoint. I loved the fact that the volumes are a bit bigger than standard tankōbons, since it makes it easier to read and appreciate the marvelous backgrounds drawn by Noda. The only "complaint" I have is that I would've liked this edition to be hardcover.

Sugimoto, a hard-bitten veteran of the Russo-Japanese War (1905), is trying to pan for gold in order to help his comrade’s widow. He was a hero, with a reputation that he can’t be killed, but that doesn’t make him money. Then a drunk tells him a legend of a hidden horde of gold, with clues to its location held in a set of prisoners’ tattoos.Between the opening war scenes and a fight with a bear, this historical action-adventure series can be bloody, but in spite of the gore, I was impressed by the dramatic staging of the battles and the vitality of the storytelling. Plus, the scenery, as the pair navigate the unbuilt frontier, is gorgeous.It did take me a bit to get used to the protagonist talking to himself, narrating his choices and actions, but it helps the reader be sure of what’s going on. That doesn’t last long once Asirpa, an Ainu girl with poison arrows, shows up. She’s my favorite part of the book, from her practical yet well-decorated costume to her quiet determination and her knowledge of the wilderness of Hokkaido. It’s only due to her that they survive to start their treasure quest.The time the first volume spends on natural predators serves as a fascinating comparison with the human villains we’ll see more of as the series progresses. Both are bestial, caring only about their own survival, which makes us root for Asirpa and Sugimoto even more. Golden Kamuy is still ongoing in Japan, with 10 volumes out so far. Golden kamuy is such an underrated series. It's quickly became one of my favorites with a great story line, entertaining characters, and some of the funniest scenes I have ever read.

Funny, historical, and action packed.
Golden Kamuy volume one is an excellent introduction to the series. It is one of the most unique manga I have come across. It seamlessly blends dramatic moments with plenty of comedy. Throughout the entire span of volume one, we also gain endless historical facts about Japan during this period as well as plenty of information about one of Japan's native tribes, the Ainu people. It is also filled with a decent amount of gore/action, so it is definitely not for the faint of heart.In volume one we are introduced to our two protagonists, Asirpa and Sugimoto, one is a member of the previously mentioned native tribe (the Ainu people) and the other is a Japanese war survivor known for being "immortal". Both are compelling and interesting characters from the get-go, and they have a fantastic dynamic with one another.Without spoiling too much, the main purpose of Golden Kamuy is the search for a hidden treasure trove of gold. I highly recommend this volume and series for anyone who really enjoys action, comedy, historical facts, and bizarreness. It's a good mix of all of the above as well as much more.

昔北海道でバスガイドをしていたのでアイヌ民族についても学びましたが、その頃この漫画に出会っていたらもっとお客様に対して生き生きした内容をご案内できたのにと思いました。お話も良く出来ているし、絵も綺麗で読みやすかったです。

This manga is great and gets even better and better
I own Japanese version and bought English ones for my husband to read. The first 5 volumes are like Pilot version and the story properly starts at volume 6 because this is on a weekly magazine and there was a possibility of canceling the series if it didn’t get popular enough to carry on, so the author was making it so it can be ended in volume 5-6, then the magazine decided to carry on with this series properly so he can start telling the story. So I recommend to read at least up to 6 to decide if you like this series or not, unless you hated it to begin with. It gets even better at volume 8 I would say.
