Gyo (2-in-1 Deluxe Edition) (Junji Ito)

Description:

The floating smell of death hangs over the island. What is it? A strange, legged fish appears on the scene... So begins Tadashi and Kaori's spiral into the horror and stench of the sea. Here is the creepiest masterpiece of horror manga ever from the creator of Uzumaki, Junji Ito. Hold your breath until all is revealed.

Something's rotten in Okinawa...

From School Library Journal

Gr 10 Up—A near-death encounter and temperamental mate are enough to strain even the most solid of couples. Add a mysterious, sickening, and inescapable stench to the mix, and a frayed relationship completely unravels. The figurative and literal demise of the romantic relationship between main characters Tadashi and Kaori begins with the arrival of an odor referred to as the "stench of death"; a repugnant smell eclipsed only by the arrival of grotesque, multilegged fish. These repulsive creatures multiply and skitter all over Japan like an invasive cockroach species, causing panic and delivering the death foreshadowed with the arrival of the odor. This invasive species causes irreparable damage and destruction through the emission of an airborne pathogen (that brings the people of Japan to the brink of extinction). Although classified as horror, this work has an underlying social commentary that is likely to be the subject of spirited discourse among mature readers. Ito masterfully builds suspense through his strategic use of shadowing, unidirectional line, hatching, and action panels featuring "sound" as the only text. The illustrations are paradoxically understated, appropriately disgusting, and achieve the right balance of abhorrence and desire to know what happens. VERDICT A suspenseful horror tale balanced by the pull of the plot and push of disturbing images.—Tamela Chambers, Chicago Public Schools

Horror Master Does It Again ...

So Junji Ito ... my wife is addicted to his writing and manga ... so when he was at SDCC ... I knew I was in trouble. So we went to his speaking engagement and the man is really brilliant (honestly I had no idea who he was prior to this) ... I felt bad for him because his hands are very badly gnarled because of years of drawing. But no one can take away the horror he inspires with everything he writes and draws. He creates horrors that give nightmares horrors ... the things he writes and draws is amazing and terrifying and beautiful at the same time. The stories are all enthralling and tell tales that will give you nightmares but you will soon realize that even your nightmares pale in comparison to the nightmares he is writing. It's truly awe inspiring to be honest. One day we will lose this horror genre master but for now, I recommend everyone buy his books and be both inspired and terrified.

Ito's Stories Always Does This To me...

Tadashi's girlfriend Kaori has a very sensitive nose. One evening while on their trip, she detects a very horrid scent and she becomes very distraught. Soon, the fish smell of death reaches all throughout Okinawa. What the heck could it be? Gyo will make you question humanity, science, and the threat of body horror which could happen at any time. I read this in one day. It's that thrilling. Before reading Gyo, I read Ito's "Tomie" and "Uzumaki" which are fantastic by the way-- so I am already familiar with his style of drawing and storytelling. Gyo is no different. It is a short story and in a way, you have to piece together the why and the what as you go along and just be satisfied with that. The book includes some disturbing short stories in the end that will raise the hair on your neck.

Weird, creepy, and entertaining.

p. · October 23, 2018

This book is actually one of the first things I ever purchased from Junji Ito. In the past I read online fan made translations of his works and I never read Gyo. I was hoping one day I could officially support Junji and when I heard about this book I bought it immediately.First thing I have to say it is a very odd concept. Without spoiling too much all you need to know is something happened underwater and sea animals are coming out of the sea attacking humans. I won't spoil anymore but thats the entire concept in a nut shell there is more to it than that but I don't want to give it away. I will admit it sounds weird and not that serious but he pulls off a nice creepy atmosphere. It contains a lot of body horror and weird images that we've come to know and love about Junji Ito's works. Some pages you just feel or even smell what the characters are smelling. His art really carries the odd situation the characters are in. I can vividly remember some pages of the story because of how well they were drawn or how creepy some of them looked like. I will admit some images made me uncomfortable and anyone reading this can practically guess what I am talking about since its just so uncomfortable thinking about it.I've read some reviews saying not to start here if you are a new comer. I kind of agree because I feel like if you are a new comer who never read his works or only heard about it this is a long story compared to his other works. I would start with a small story collection those usually get scary/odd much quicker than this book since it has a slow opening then really gets up there. If you think this is up your alley its not a hard read and its much shorter than Uzumaki. Also as a added bonus the book also has the short story "enigma of amigara fault" this is by far most probably the most famous of his works spread all over the internet. This is actually how I originally heard about him. All you need to know about this tale is human shaped holes are appearing in a mountain and people are traveling to see the mountain and I will leave it at that.Overall this is a good read for any Junji Ito fan I still have vivid memories of some of the art from the book. While the concept is a tad weird or not as scary as his other works his art really carries the premise. Plus its always great to have a physical copy of "enigma of amigara fault."

Thanks for the book

Creepy and so Good!

A.H. · April 4, 2024

I purchase Ito’s books just for the creep factor. The nightmarish images and storylines are more than the imagination can fathom! In Gyo, meaning ‘ghastly’ and ‘fish’, takes creatures from the deep and sets them to land, for one unknown reason. A with most Japanese tales, there’s no true ending to the story. The causes are usually unexplained as well, but this doesn’t distract from the horror if it all.I felt so bad for Tadashi, because first he had an unappreciative girlfriend: Kaori. But her turmoil turns out to have heft and sadly, it sees her, and the rest of Japan with ‘ghastly’ endings, so to speak.Good read- check it out!
