This book is fantastic! Bowen and Watson deftly combine explanations of complex issues surrounding student use of AI, suggestions for integrating AI effectively into a wide range of teaching and learning situations, and examples of actual prompts to enhance the effectiveness of AI. This is so good I kept telling myself 'just a few more pages,' until I had read nearly the entire book in one sitting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good primer and introduction to the topic

J.J.K. · November 26, 2024

AI is one of those areas that grows exponentially in what it is, what it can do, and what the dangers are. An area that this is really impacting is education. I needed a toehold into AI and thinking about education in order to start learning about it - the good, the bad, and the ugly to prepare for how it will impact me and my teaching. This book was an invaluable primer to get me into the topic, give examples, and some hope. While it's not one size fits all, the material here is applicable for all levels of education. Laced with plenty of examples it is very accessible, though to be honest, parts of the book read like AI was used to polish it off, which in some ways is good, to give example of what is being talked about. Especially if you are an educator, this is a great way to get started, without the hype, and start to understand and not just fear what it means to education.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Educators Navigating the AI Revolution

The book provides a clear and insightful exploration of how AI can be effectively integrated into the learning process, empowering both teachers and students. The authors, José Antonio Bowen and C. Edward Watson, offer practical strategies and real-world examples of how AI can be used to enhance teaching and learning, from personalized learning experiences to innovative assessment methods. They address the ethical and pedagogical considerations of AI in education, providing a balanced perspective on this rapidly evolving field.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but rushed editing?

C.G.W. · November 3, 2025

I'm working with a student on his thesis on AI, so this has been a helpful, readable guide (easier to read than How AI Works by Ronald Kneusel). I'm only 70 pages in, though, and have come across four typo/grammatical errors and an unclear reference to ChemCrow (p. 73). I wondered if the editing had involved AI. The examples are both helpful and funny, and it's been a great primer to how AI can integrate in and impact a number of fields (not just teaching).

5.0 out of 5 stars The best guide out there for teachers right now

R.B. · November 30, 2024

How you read this will depend on what you want to use it for. I've read it twice now--the first time I just read it through and made lots of margin notes and underlines. Afterward, I led a faculty book discussion group on this book, and mostly skimmed it. But in doing so I found that the later sections on "teaching" and "learning" would also be great just for reference. There are loads of prompt examples--including sample results from different chat bots. There are also just some very excellent ideas for how to adapt your teaching and assessment in an age of readily available and sophisticated AI chat bots. I've incorporated several of these ideas into my teaching already and have been pleased. Even if you find just two or three ideas from this book that you'll use regularly, it's definitely worth purchasing and reading.I want to pay proper respect, though, to the first section of the book. It is a wonderful introduction to artificial intelligence and some ways to think about it in the context of teaching and learning. The authors are definitely supporting the use of AI in teaching and learning--but it's tempered by appropriate caution regarding the as-yet-unknown influence AI might have on learning. Rather, they cause us to re-analyze the learning process. What aspects of learning are critical for developing skill and expertise? How do we still ensure that the "work" of learning happens appropriately and isn't replaced with AI doing all that work for us? Since this book focuses more on the practical side of AI in teaching and learning, there's certainly more that could be said about these cautions than what you'll find in this book. But given its purpose, I think the book treats the subject adequately.I guess the best I can say is BUY THIS. READ IT. If you are a teacher, you need to read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Skeptical, Eventually Empowered

C.V. · June 16, 2025

When I started reading this book, I was highly skeptical about what the book would cover. I was concerned it would favor too much on AI and not enough on the ethics of AI.While I feel there could have been more focused on providing more ethical information of AI, for example how some AI has stolen work used to create the AI. I still found it helpful to see how AI could be incorporated into the classroom as a way to incorporate AI literacy skills, knowledge, and understanding just like you would with digital literacy. As a college English instructor, I would have wanted more of chapter 11, but this book gives a good overview along with how AI impacts writing assignments. As many have mentioned previously, including in this book, AI is here. We must find a way to make sure students understand AI and how it will impact their lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Future of The World

C. · November 7, 2024

Purchased this book because I signed up for a book study for hours on my professional educator license. The book had relevant examples and reasoning for all grade levels, complete with prompts, how to use AI, how to monitor student use of AI, how to build policy so that students are not cheating with AI... I could go on. It was a very worthwhile read, and I have recommended it again and again to my coworkers, one of which is reading about it now. AI is coming, and it will change the world. It's better to be prepared for it, as it starts to infiltrate education!

4.0 out of 5 stars its an okay book

M. · December 22, 2024

I know that this is one of the top rated books and so I thought it would be more than it was. I found it to read like a textbook, which maybe that is what it was supposed to do. It provides helpful information, but I didn't find it would be very relatable to teachers (I am a professor and it wasn't relatable to me). Good information, but wish it would have been more applicable to the real world challenges of teachers and school personnel.
