5.0 out of 5 stars Sock Knitter's Dream

T.S. · October 22, 2024

I have become addicted to knitting socks and watch the author's very enjoyable and informative podcast. Her sense of humor comes through in her writing too. Her book has great directions for making many types of heels and a large number of sock patterns and I want to make them all! (I just counted them, there are 26 patterns.) The patterns start with basic socks and move on to socks with cables, socks with colorwork, socks with fades, socks with lace and socks with slipped stitches. Most patterns use fingering weight yarn but a few use DK for when you want a chunky sock. The directions are very clear and include many photographs. A chapter on the many possible materials that can be used (needles, yarns and notions) is very helpful, as is the chapter on sizing. This is a very user friendly book and one that you will be glad to have in your knitting library.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful & useful - great for knitters unfamiliar with art of sock knitting

I learned to knit 40 years ago and have knit socks, but have not perfected the art of sock knitting. And it really is an art. I ordered this book based on excellent word of mouth among podcasters and have been impressed with both patterns and really beautiful photography. I've certainly collected enough sock yarn - now just need to practice using some of the fabulous color ideas set out by Summer in this wonderful book.

We are new to knitting, nonetheless, decided to try socks and bought the book by Summer Lee. She does an outstanding job in writing concise, clean patterns even a beginner can understand. The first pair of socks we made are fabulous and am proud to give as Christmas presents this year. Thank you, Summer Lee!

If you have knitted scores of socks, she will inspire you, expand your sock-knitting horizons and encourage you to try new designs, colors, and techniques. The photographs are gorgeous, the array of spectacular sock patterns is positively mind-bending, and the text is a joy to read. This is a book I will turn to again and again!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lighthearted fun knitting book, not necessarily for a beginner

M.D. · April 3, 2025

Overall I enjoyed this book and am using one of the patterns to knit my first pair of socks., The book is colorful, enjoyable to read and I like Summer’s fun writing style. I am not a new knitter. I’ve made numerous sweaters, hats, scarves and shawls. Even with my level of knitting I found some of the details skimpy and a basic understanding of some knitting terms assumed. Summer knits using the magic loop method and even though other needles and methods are discussed the instructions are written from that perspective. That makes the instructions hard to follow in particular with the instructions for the German short row heel sock. Summer says plainly it isn’t her favorite style of sock to knit and I thought that was evident from her instructions. I wasn’t enjoying it too much either until I found another tutorial on the internet to follow. It winds up that is the version I like and that fits me best, which I would not have known if I followed Summer’s instructions. For example if you are using shorty circular needles you’ll need to place 3 markers in addition to your end of row marker not two. On the second part of the heel you’re removing the third marker not the second. I think a new knitter using anything other than magic loop would find the instructions confusing. Overall though if you’re a knitter and you like socks I’d recommend the book. The additional 25 sock patterns give you a wide variety to chose from. If you plan to do a German short row heel sock however with any other method than magic loop I’d recommend using a different tutorial than the one in the book.

Excellent book for beginners and experienced knitters

I discovered Summer Lee on YouTube and instantly fell in love with her socks! She has such flair for designing socks. Besides that she's also got a lovely warm and fun personality that makes her really relatable, which is what really made me want to buy this book. I am a fairly new knitter that has knitted socks before and wants to get better, so for me this book is perfect as it goes over all the basics and then moves you gently into more advanced and interesting patterns. It's very well written, has beautiful photography and more of her humour and personality. Eagerly await her next book.
