From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—Ada Marie Twist is an inquisitive African American second grader and a born scientist. She possesses a keen yet peculiar need to question everything she encounters, whether it be a tick-tocking clock, a pointy-stemmed rose, or the hairs in her dad's nose. Ada's parents and her teacher, Miss Greer, have their hands full as the child's science experiments wreak day-to-day havoc. On the first day of spring, the title character is tinkering outside her home when she notices an unpleasant odor. She sets out to discover what might have caused it. Beaty shows Ada using the scientific method in developing hypotheses in her smelly pursuit. The little girl demonstrates trial and error in her endeavors, while appreciating her family's full support. In one experiment, she douses fragrances on her cat and then attempts to place the feline in the washing machine. Her parents, startled by her actions, send her to the Thinking Chair, where she starts to reflect on the art of questioning by writing her thoughts on the wall—now the Great Thinking Hall. Ada shines on each page as a young scientist, like her cohorts in the author's charming series. The rhyming text playfully complements the cartoon illustrations, drawing readers into the narrative. VERDICT A winner for storytime reading and for young children interested in STEM activities. Pair with science nonfiction for an interesting elementary cross-curricular project.—Krista Welz, North Bergen High School, NJ

These books are some of my favorite to read to my 11 year old!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book; part of a great series.

S.C. · May 21, 2025

This book is so great and inspiring. We love this whole series. When they are on sale I will get extra copies and give them as birthday gifts; either alone or with another one from the set. They are so great for kids to see what is possible and also learn about friendship and life lessons in a sweet way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Favorite Book Series for kids and Parents

A.C. · February 11, 2025

This is one of our favorite book series. My 5 year old LOVES these books, and to be honest, so do I. Each book has a great message but they all tie together well through Lila Greers class. My kids get excited to point out all the characters and what they aspired to be in EACH book and they know them all. A couple of these even had me choked up. 10/10 would recommend for everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars My daughter's favorite book

E.F. · December 17, 2024

I bought this years ago and never left a review. This was THE book for my daughter (until she got older and got into Dogman). She adored this book, read it multiple times, and I just can't give it enough praise. The other Quentioneers books are also excellent, but this is the one we started with and it has a very special place in my heart as I'm a VERY big fan of questioning things and how science works. That it's not an immediate answer, you just get less and less wrong :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book

My kids love these books! My 7 year old goes around just randomly saying “Ada Twist, Scientist” over and over again because she loves the sound of it coming off her tongue. The stories and illustrations are awesome, and I love how they encourage our kids to tap into who God made them to be as individuals. Ada Twist is my daughter’s favorite of them so far (we’re hoping there will be more to come), so it has me paying attention to her love for science and how we can encourage that along. It’s given me more insight into my own kid because I thought “Rosie Revere Engineer” would be her favorite. She loves Rosie, for sure, but Ada Twist ended up being her favorite. My son likes “Iggy Peck Architect” the most, so it’s interesting to see what each of them are drawn to. I asked my son if he just preferred Iggy because he’s a guy (wondering if he could relate more to the guy than to the 2 girls), but he said it’s just a really funny book and he likes “all the architect stuff”. It’s always nice when a series of books comes along to give you more insight into the beautiful way God has made each of your kids as individuals, and shows you how you might encourage them along in who they’re wired to be. As a family, we’re hoping to see more and more books in this series to add to our home library.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT book, especially for little girls!

I volunteer with a reading program, and purchased this as a gift for the child I worked with last school year. I love that it was aimed right for her sweet spot, the child in the book is bright and inquisitive, just like she is. She promised to read it over the summer so that we can talk about it when school starts in August. As a note, its hard to judge the difficulty level as at that age, kids have vastly different reading comprehension skills. I think it was perfect for the awesome child I worked with.

Awesome
