Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design: Choosing among Five Approaches

"Creswell does an excellent job categorizing the various qualitative methods into five approaches: narrative research, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, and case study...The author has expanded on and updated the information he presented in the first edition of the book (Creswell, 1998), including discussion of the various schools of thought that have developed among qualitative researchers since the mid 1990's...Qualitative Inquiry & Research Design: Choosing among five approaches is a highly informative book; researchers will likely return again and against to the book as they expand their comfort zone within qualitative research."

Peggy M. Delmas, University of Alabama

Creswell has produced an even more outstanding and valuable text for qualitative research than the First Edition.”
                                                                    —
Edith King, University of Denver

Like the bestselling First Edition, this new version explores the philosophical underpinnings, history, and key elements of each of five qualitative inquiry approaches: narrative research, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, and case study. Using an accessible and engaging writing style, author John W. Creswell compares theoretical frameworks, ways to employ standards of quality, and strategies for writing introductions to studies, collecting data, analyzing data, writing a narrative, and verifying results.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, clear overview

E.R. · March 15, 2011

Who says a book on research methods can't be a page turner? I've taken graduate level course work on qualitative research and I now ask: why wasn't this book assigned as a reference? This is hands-down one of the best qualitative research reference books out there. Creswell writes extremely well, and the use of carefully-selected journal articles to illustrate the application of the five research methods is very helpful. This book has immediate relevance to my work. Although I purchased it only recently, I've used it a great deal already. I highly recommend this book if you want to know which approach best fits your research question, and which specific qualitative methods to use. This book is a very good investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Textbook

This is a required text for a course I am taking. The author has taken the time to make the concepts easy to understand by focusing on a few tried and true measures. I with that I would have had this text the first time I took a qualitative statistics course. However this is used for post graduate courses as it's not a true survey of all possible approaches. It's aimed at education and social sciences. I will keep this text since it will prove useful after my degree is over should I want to continue publishing.

4.0 out of 5 stars much better than I initially thought....

This is a "how-to" book on qualitative analysis. It provides some of the basics but focuses on the more advanced information. It is very well-written, with minimal jargon and plenty of detail. I've been using it a lot recently. This is not the only book to read/have if your focus is qualitative analysis, but it is a very good one to have at hand for detailed practical knowledge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reader Friendly Creswell

J.C. · October 19, 2009

For an academic text on Qualitative Research, the book is surprisingly easy reading and is user friendly. It is informative, concepts are clearly explained, and the chapters are organised for maximum accessibility with discussion questions, additional notes, summary, tables and visual representations. Overall, Creswell provides structured guidance to help the reader understand and use each of the five approaches, and the templates for data analysis, plan for qualitative inquiry and guided activities are particularly helpful.Thumbs up!

Plainly written and up to date textbook! I am a doctoral student who is also teaching at the master's level. This book not only helps me understand my options for research but has helped me clarify the subtle distinctions between approaches to qualitative research. With examples and ample references, this book should be on every qualitative social sciences researcher's shelf!

I originally bought Creswell's book to introduce me to the different qualitative research approaches. Creswell's book is worth buying as it enjoys a number of merits:1- Very user friendly layout.2- Very straightforward and easy to understand.3- The book guides through the steps of writing a research paper (introduction, research questions, etc.)4- The appendices with example articles to illustrate the different methodologies are great.5- Creswell provides a list of useful readings at the end of each chapter.

If you are a phd student- buy this

This is a great book for anyone designing their phd protocol or any early career researcher designing their study. Also great for any phd student at any stage- its great to help you work through the fundamental issues- what methods to use and why- what are the broad approaches to knowledge generation, what methods can i use and what data/answers will it give me.I am a Director of PGR- i recommend all my students use this book.
