The British Aircraft Carrier: In Two World Wars

Description:

The Royal Navy invented the aircraft carrier and most of the key innovations which have enabled carriers to remain effective, exploiting continuing changes in aircraft technology, from biplanes to supersonic jets. This work, in two volumes, tells (and explains) how that happened over more than a century of British carrier development, based largely on declassified official documents, both British and U.S.

Major themes include British domination of the early years of carrier development, and the audacious and highly original plans for their use during World War I, which inspired later naval thinking on the potential of carrier aviation. The introduction of armored flight decks in the 1930s was only the first of a sequence of British innovations, the most important of which made it possible for carriers to operate jet aircraft (the angled deck, the steam catapult, and the mirror landing sight). These British developments, particularly the steam catapult, were crucial to the survival of the US carrier force in the postwar era, to an extent often forgotten, and covered in the next volume.

This book covers all British-built carriers, including those in Commonwealth and foreign service, with the historical context, both operational and technical, explained in detail, as is the connection to larger British national concerns. The book is heavily illustrated with photographs, but also reproduces official plans from the National Maritime Museum, many of which have never previously been published.

Dr. Norman Friedman maintains his reputation and quality of analysis with another new release: BRITISH AIRCRAFT CARRIERS IN TWO WORLD WARS!It an outstanding book - follows well the authors earlier works on submarines, anti-air warfare, etc. The title is heavily illustrated with B&W photos - so many that have not been published in earlier works - and has a very unique st of profile schematics, beginning with HMS Hermes, HMS Furious, HMS Glorious, HMS Ark Royal, HMS Victorious, HMCS Magnificent - all the last three as originally built - and, HMS Unicorn. These are all side and overhead views, in color, and because of the size of the later year ships, are on multi-page foldouts. The book is organized in nine Chapters - organized roughly chronologically thru the big 1943 ("Malta") CV and "Colossus" class light carriers, as below:- 1 The Royal Navy and the Aircraft Carrier- 2 Carriers and their Aircraft [p.30]- 3 Beginnings- 4 The Treaty World [p.97]- 5 Treaty Carriers- 6 Armoured Carriers [p. 150]- 7 The War Program- 8 The Future Building Committee and the 1943 Carriers [p. 199]- 9 Trade ProtectionThis is followed by extensive Notes [p. 276], Bibliography [p. 300], Ship List, Ship Data [ p. 305], and Index. Both the Ship List and Ship Data follow the general pattern adopted in the authors earlier works on American ship designs. The Ship Data pages begin with details of the early Seaplane Carriers.Chapter 8 includes the World War II aircraft carrier designs, including the armored carriers, well illustrated, and incudes extensive coverage of British DNC decision as the design proposals progressed. This includes the proposed "Malta" class fleet carriers - considered somewhat counterpart to the US Navy "Midway" class completed shortly after WW II.Chapter 9 includes the "Colossus" class CVL and the escort carriers - both those provided by the U.S. under Lend-Lease and those "converted" (HMS Activity, etc.) - and includes B&W schematic drawings, as well as a overhead schematic new of each of the four main decks of HMS Activity; plus, profile and overhead drawings of HMS Nairana; and, the MAC ships (MAC Empire Macalpine is illustrated). Each class of carrier covered has at least one overhead and profile schematic (such as HMS Indefatigable, ppg. 178-9) - and in the case of the light aircraft carriers that served in the Korean War - several of the photos are linked to this period. Detail provided on every CV/CVL/CVE class includes extensive text about guns, radar and other electronics, engineering, and other design aspects, both as designed and as their service years progressed. The Notes section is much like the earlier volumes on American aircraft carriers, etc., in that they are amplifications of text and sometime details that would otherwise not be critical text, sources (Admiralty records, etc.).The amount of information is just AWESOME. The book sets a fine standard - found in other of Friedman's books - andit will take a substantial time digesting all of the information contained in this one volume!HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars More detailed history of UK carriers WW1 & WW2) and their development.

The enhanced specificity for the period of the book is excellent that compliments and expands upon his prior book, British Carrier Aviation.Worth having if one is interested in this period and again, love the book and added it to my library so if a subject you are interested in, BUY THE BOOK!, you won't be disappointed. My one pet peeve (and I know I am alone in this) is that there is no mention here of the brief WW2 thought of using seaplane carriers again as in WW1 (HMS Athene & HMS Engadine that were mentioned in the prior book nor mention of the HMS Manela & Dumana or aviation transports etc. Ditto the USN book as to seaplane tenders etc.). Personal bias for want of any books on that aspect.

An essential purchase from the master of naval history. Great book, laid out in customary style, Norman Friedman takes us through the development of the British aircraft carrier from the early beginnings into full maturity when it supplanted the battleship. Excellent.

Recommended as a good supplement to his 1998 book on British Carrier Aviation

T. · August 9, 2025

Although an American, Dr Norman Friedman clearly has a huge interest in the Royal Navy and has published many excellent reference books, not least his 1988 tome "British Carrier Aviation". 37 years later I was expecting this new book to be in large part be a rehash of that. Arguably it is - history has not changed and no significant new primary sources have been released, indeed quite the opposite. In the 1980's it was still often possible to speak to the designers and veterans who actually built and served on the carriers in WW2 and earlier, sadly not now. Also, as I have found from my own research activities, in recent decades many paper documents, files and folders dating back to the 1914-1945 period have become been lost, damaged, deep archived (i.e. very costly to access), or even destroyed. The research Dr Friedmann did in the mid-1980's could not be repeated now. Going back to the book, compared to "British Carrier Aviation" a big effort seems to have been made to make the text more readable. For good or bad, there are also far fewer hard to decipher tables and also far fewer diagrams - but those diagrams included (e.g. of Glorious and Victorious) are almost works of art. The publishers have also avoided an obvious trap by making an effort to use different photos, I thought I recognised some but they always turned out to be a slightly different, even it was probably from the same photo shoot of a ship. Overall, an essential buy for a naval enthusiast who doesn't own "British Carrier Aviation", otherwise a useful supplement to this.
