This useful and well researched book is a must for any serious railway historian or locomotive enthusiast, 704 pages with reference to 350 builders, 541 illustrations and 47 diagrams. Excellent Data for the British Steam Enthusiast

This is a reprint of a valuable work covering, as the title says, builders of locomotives during the steam era in Great Britain. It is essentially a collection of data -- a summary of the locomotives built by each builder -- with a short history of the company. In this sense, it is a reference work much as a cyclopedia is a reference work. It's not a book for reading cover to cover, but for finding basic information on a particular company and its production. It is illustrated with sample photos, ads, and other ephemera concerning most of the builders. No collection of this type can be completely inclusive or without errors -- especially when it is a seminal work on the topic. But from what I can tell in my scanning through the pages, author James W. Lowe has done a remarkable job in tracking down information on even the most obscure builders.Being in the nature of a data collection for those who want to deepen their knowledge of the subject, this volume is not for the little train fanatic or casual reader. For one thing, the builders' lists will be virtually incomprehensible to someone not familiar with the topic.Although I have long liked and read about British steam locomotives, I claim no authority on the subject. Therefore, I'm unable to nit-pick details and errors. And, considering the breadth and scope of this work, it would be uncharitable to do so.This is a substantial and important addition to my railroading library and I commend it highly to any student of steam locomotion.

This is a reprint of a book first published in 1975.The print is very small, perhaps because the original was a larger format.Photographs are generally of mediocre quality
