Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-7-The start of sixth grade has not been smooth sailing for identical twins Francine and Maureen Carter, who are both Black. Francine, "the talker," is eager for new challenges and experiences and more time away from her sister/best-friend-oh, and she goes by "Fran" now, please. Meanwhile, Maureen, "the thinker," misses dressing alike and having all her classes with her twin, and is especially intimidated by the lunchroom and Cadet Corp. When Maureen discovers that the girls' separate classes are due not to a scheduling error but to Francine's interference, her anger spurs her to action and she challenges her sister by running against her for student council president. As the girls develop campaign strategies and try to best each other, will they permanently ruin the bond they once had? The twins' transforming relationship captures all the fraught possibilities of adolescence-the fear of change and the excitement of potential. A fully realized array of friends and family who help with (and occasionally add to) the drama create a world that readers will wish they were a part of. Wright's colorful artwork brings this endearing cast of characters to life with a dynamic range of expressiveness that suits the story's emotional highs and lows and many warm laughs. VERDICT A must-read for middle grade comics lovers. 5.0 out of 5 stars Review for Twins: A Graphic Novel (Twins #1)

This book was a fantastic read for my college-level children's literature class! Twins explores themes of identity, family, and the struggles of growing up with a unique and relatable perspective. The art style is captivating, and the characters are both endearing and real. The story touches on issues that resonate with readers of all ages, especially those navigating the complexities of sibling relationships and self-discovery.As a class, we discussed how the graphic novel format brings a fresh approach to storytelling. It's an engaging way to dive into deeper topics while also being visually stimulating. Highly recommend this for anyone looking for a thoughtful yet accessible graphic novel, and especially for educators looking for material to introduce to young readers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Middle School Story About Twins Growing Apart, But Not Away, From Each Other

M.K. · May 29, 2023

I really enjoyed this sister story about twins Maureen and Francine who are drifting apart as they start middle school. Maureen still wants things to be the same, where she and Francine do everything together, but Francine is ready to start exploring her own identity separate from her sister. They both decide to run for class president, for different reasons, and it becomes quite the showdown. But along the way they both realize that the other sister has good reasons for running, beyond just getting back at each other. They have to start seeing things from the other sister's perspective to gain empathy for each other. The most heartrending line from Maureen is: "It felt like you were throwing me away." The feelings are real! I would highly recommend this book for middle grade readers.

My 10yr old has read this book 3 times already. She is concerned about going to middle school and this story helped ease her anxiety. She is a huge fan of graphic novels. She once told me she hated to read. Once I introduced her to graphic novels, she has been excited about reading. She has a stack of books in the bathroom, next to her bed, and in her backpack. She is always reading. I have been looking for a graphic novel with characters that look like her. She loved the fact that the girls wear bonnets to bed like my daughter and her sister do, they go to church, have plus sized Moms who wear head wraps and get saucy every now and then. She even noticed the Afro comb and edge control on the dresser. She is so impressed to see little girls that live lives similar to hers. This book is a winner! My daughter can't put it down.

Very nice for older gradeschoolers /junior high. If your child prefers more realistic stories -this is perfect. Twins were realistic and nice girls who work hard and value academics. Struggles are realistic and sibling rivalry is resolved in a healthy way.I didn’t particularly like the family wasn’t honest about the twins class scheduling issues. That said, I can see why some parents would just keep those decisions to themselves. Just not my parenting style. It all comes out in the end anyway. (Doesn’t it always? Lol)Just to illustrate:One twin is upset that they didn’t get the same schedule. They tell her it was decided by the computer, but really the other twin had asked her parents to separate them so she could have some independence. They also put one twin in cadets when she wanted normal gym because they thought she needed to work on leadership.

A brilliant and fun read!

L.K. · November 13, 2020

First things first, the colours and the illustrations are eye catching and awesome. The front cover of Maureen and Francine made me smile as it's like a little snapshot of Kelly and I whenever we fall out. Arguments never last longer than maybe ten minutes and our faces usually resemble that of Maureen and Francine as the stubbornness oozes out of us both.Secondly, when reading the blurb the story instantly connected and so I was super excited to dive in. I don't tend to read a lot of graphic novels so from page one this was super fun to read.I've actually not read many books about twin characters so it was truly refreshing to connect with the characters on a deeper level. There was one moment in the beginning of the story where Maureen is waiting for Francine to ask the teacher a question for her and Francine changes her mind and Maureen has to do it. Their facial expressions and the way it was written completely hit home. It made me laugh but also tugged at my heart strings as that is me and Kelly on every level. If we get scared or don't want to do something we always have the other one for help but when we both don't want to do something, forget about it, the looks we give each other...well, Shannon captured them perfectly with Maureen and Francine. There were so many moments in this book that got me quite emotional. I don't want to spoil it and give them all away but if you ever wondered what it was like to be a twin then I highly recommend giving it a read. Maureen and Francine go into this school year in different classes and while Francine uses it as a chance to be herself and create her own identity, Maureen is terrified. When the reason behind them being in different classes is revealed it got me. Boy, did it get me, I could feel the anxiety, anger and upset in my heart and while I can totally relate to how Francine feels about being a twin, I just wanted to hug Maureen and be there for her.I really loved this book. I think it's an awesome read and a fun way of stepping into the life of twins. I know not every set of twins will share this story but it certainly rings true for Kelly and I. There's definitely that extra struggle to figure out who you are when you are so used to doing the same things and everything together and looking like someone else. However, I think it's so brilliant and lovely in celebrating twins too. I loved reading about Maureen and Francine's special bond and the times when they have each other's back and support each other. It was cool to see them grow as individuals and find classes that they enjoyed separately, learning that it's ok to like different things and do different things while still being the best of friends.
