Review

Mary Jane Miller has compiled many of the illustrations in this book, Ancient Images Sacred Lines are believed to posses sacred lines because they date back one thousand years or more. These images come from the Byzantine tradition and have been painted and copied by some of the most devout people known in history. Until recently little was known about this ancient art, today there is a growing interest in iconography around the world attracting new spirituality and methods for meditation. The production of icons is no longer the sole domain of monastic communities or iconography schools. Their original designs and image are remembered as selfless gifts to us. Their icons transcend the individual, organized church and are honored today along with new silent interpretations. I want this small collection of images to carry on the experience of awe over icons and their integrity. Icons speak through the activity of painting them and / or their completion.
The images in Mary Jane Millers
coloring book are presented with a short text, leaving space for your own written observations and insights in the form of a Journal. Some of the text is scripture based and some my own words and ideas as I painted the images.
I hope you enjoy spending time with these curious images as they have the potential to help unlock the peace and serenity which lives quietly within each of us.

Coloring book and Journal all in one, a collection of templates for budding icon painters.
Examples of icon templates include,
Mary of Egypt with John the Baptist These two speak with each other as if they have known each other and share solitude which the desert can offer. We all know and share deep soundless and uttered solitude.
Holy Silence Be still and know I am here, in the beating heart, in the slow breath, I am constant and knowing. Holy Silence--I cross my hands upon my chest, I hold myself in tenderness knowing from where I have come. This love in my heart I share.
Hodegitria The small bird represents the spirit of freedom and love. This idea intertwines all things; mother and son, families, friends, nations and more. Each of us at some point has been held in someone's arm, we have been loved and we are called to love.
Mary of the Sign Upon my breast there is cherished love within, whatever or whoever it be. I open my arms to what is complete and eternal; the blessings of this life were given to me, now I give them to you. Remember always the depth of your knowing and trust it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent compendium of classic icon models

F. · January 20, 2016

There are a few compendia of icon models, but they are quite expensive and can be quite confusing for the person who is looking for good models. This work by Mary Jane Miller contains patterns for some of the classics of iconography, and so is one of the few out there for those of us who would be students. The patterns are clearly printed on the pages. There are sufficient patterns for someone to spend many months working on this discipline. That Mary Jane Miller is the compiler of these patterns makes them that more useful, because she is one of the finest iconographers around. If you are looking for a large group of patterns, this is a good place to begin. You will be in good company!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Source of Icon Drawings

A.R. · September 4, 2017

Although this book is designed to be a coloring and meditating book, the line drawings can also be used for writing icons. There are 23 line drawings, which include pictures of Christ, Madonnas, angels, and various saints. For the price and the multiple uses, I highly recommend it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Quality of templates

Templates are poor copies. I could get same by printing from internet. Wasted my money

2.0 out of 5 stars More a short coloring book than a source for icon patterns

A.C. · September 2, 2019

This is a very short book, just 50 pages, that is more of a coloring book. If you are looking for iconography patterns, I would not recommend it.Also, it is not at all clear from the description that this book is written from a Roman Catholic perspective. It is not ftom an Eastern Orthodox perspective.I am keeping it only for a couple of the pages that are helpful.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very poorly done icon templates.

A.M. · October 8, 2017

Absolutely the worst book I have seen that has or claims to have icon templates in it. The drawings are very crude and poorly done. Upon going through this book I could do nothing but throw it away.

Very disappointed with the quality of the drawings and thick printed lines. Also the paper is so thin and could easily tear. Not good value for money.
