- Mark Millar, author of the original Ultimates series from 2002
About the Author
Jonathan Hickman is the award-winning writer/artist of critically acclaimed independent titles Pax Romana, Transhuman and The Nightly News. Teaming with writer Brian Michael Bendis, he launched Marvel’s Secret Warriors, spinning out of Secret Invasion. He then wrote the Dark Reign: Fantastic Four limited series, which served as a warm-up for his revered runs on Fantastic Four and FF, and two S.H.I.E.L.D. series. Hickman penned numerous Ultimate Universe titles before bringing his intricate plotting to Avengers and New Avengers. Hickman’s years of planning culminated with the Marvel Universe-shattering Secret Wars. His impressive list of credits includes a trio of lauded series for Image: East of West, Secret and the Eisner Award-nominated The Manhattan Projects. Hickman returned to Marvel to mastermind a transformative relaunch of its mutant titles, beginning with House of X and Powers of X, and continuing with X-Men.
Juan Frigeri is an Argentinian comic book artist. He is best known for his work on the Dark Horse Star Wars miniseries Darth Maul: Son of Dathonmir, as well as with Marvel on various Spider-Man titles.
Italian illustrator Stefano Caselli broke into American comics during the early 2000s with work on titles including Marvel’s Mutant X and Thunderbolts. He enhanced his reputation on series such as Avengers: The Initiative, Secret Warriors and Avengers Assemble before playing a key role in the rotating art team on Dan Slott’s Amazing Spider-Man and joining Jonathan Hickman on Avengers. Caselli collaborated with Brian Michael Bendis on a groundbreaking Invincible Iron Man run featuring Riri Williams as a new armored hero, and joined Gerry Duggan on the seafaring X-series Marauders.

5.0 out of 5 stars Having a good knowledge of Marvel Comics goes a long way!
An amazing read! Great start to the Ultimate Universe!
5.0 out of 5 stars Good book
Good book
4.0 out of 5 stars Great Overall, But Lacking One Thing
I wanna start this by saying that the book itself feels very high quality, and the colors aren't to dulled or saturated. While this story is a great launchpad for the series and a great start for anyone getting into this universe, it does have one major issue. This volume follows a simple to understand structure: each issue, a new superhero is revealed and added to the team, leading up to an epic battle that takes a surprising turn and leaves me wondering what'll happen to our heroes. The problem with this is that while each issue does a good job of setting up the new addition to the team, we don't see them working alongside the rest of the team much until said climactic battle. I feel the biggest reason people read about teams like The Ultimates/Avengers or X-Men is to see the interactions between said heroes, but we don't get much of that in this volume. To me, it feels more like the Doom & Iron Lad show. Overall, a fantastic continuation of the plot set up in Ultimate Invasion, but I'd like to see them flesh out the team dynamic a bit more!
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
This is a fantastic start to the Ultimates!
5.0 out of 5 stars Looks like new
Great condition
5.0 out of 5 stars like the ultimate universe
stories and art are great
3.0 out of 5 stars solid work.
a sequel to Ultimate Invasion but not necessary to have read it before you read this one.does a good job balancing an episodic format with a larger plot.
3.0 out of 5 stars A semi-slow start, but ends with promise for Volume 2.
Deniz Camp’s “The Ultimates” wrapped up its first arc in 2024, acting as the unofficial “highway” for the larger “Ultimate” universe at large as it detailed the Ultimates’ ongoing battle against the Maker Council. As ongoing series go, “The Ultimates” was a little bit slower to fully get “going” than “Ultimate Spider-Man” or “Ultimate Black Panther,” with Camp taking his time in escalating the stakes while introducing the full squadron of characters. That being said, Volume 1 did pick up considerably in its final issue, and from the looks of things, it appears that Volume 2 – and Year 2, as a whole – should be ramping up to some very interesting things (including the return of one major villain established way back in “Ultimate Invasion”).So yeah: on the whole, a bit of a mixed bag for me, but still entertaining, and with a strong ending. I’ll be excited to see if Camp can keep the momentum going in Year 2.
Excellent reboot!
Je ne connaissais pas cet auteur, je suis agréablement surpris…! C’est intelligent et l’action ne manque pas…!
Good book
Its an amazing book
Broken heroes for a broken world
A good start to this incarnation of the Ultimates. Good story and great artwork. I like the outlaw style Avengers/Ultimates.Iron Lad is on a mission to fix the world with Doom at his side. Realising what the maker has fine by robbing countless heroes of their destiny and taking over the world. They are recruiting, but it is not going well as the heroes are a broken as the world. Despite this, they are making loud statements, but what happens when they come to the notice of the higher echelon of the Makers' council. Is the world too broken yo fix? Does the rag tag group have a chance? Who will stand with them, and who will fall. A very good start. I am interested to see what happens next. The book finishes with a varient covers gallery and a character design sketchbook.
Worth a look
Not bad, dont compare to the Millar/Hitch run and enjoy for what it is
A disappointment
Book starts off well, trying to world build following Ultimate Invasion but it is largely rushed and under explored- we see for example the heroes diacover the original human torch, who never speaks, receives no back story and only appears in one panel afterwards. Most disappointing is that the book falls into the trap of so many Marvel books of putting message over story- the entire second half the book is spent telling the reader how awful white people are or how evil capitalism is. It's clichee and dull and especially disappointing considering how Ultimate Spider-man got it so right and how the original 'Ultimates' books by Millar was able to weave politics, action and story together so well.Art is generally pretty good with occasional drops in quality.
