About the Author

Industry legend Chris Claremont is best known for his epic sixteen-year run on Uncanny X-Men. Claremont’s focus on the themes of prejudice and tolerance struck at the hearts of comics fans, and he built an unparalleled following during the next three decades. Under his pen, the X-Men franchise spawned a vast array of spin-offs, many of them written by Claremont himself. His other credits include Iron Fist, Ms. Marvel, Power Man and Spider-Woman. Claremont has returned to the X-Men universe in New Exiles, GeNext, X-Men Forever, Chaos War: X-Men and Nightcrawler.

Journalist, editor, filmmaker and more, Ann Nocenti has a long history in comics, both as a writer and editor. As an editor at Marvel, she oversaw such titles as New Mutants and Uncanny X-Men. As a writer, she has worked for both Marvel (Longshot, Spectacular Spider-Man, Wolverine) and DC (Batman, Kid Eternity), but is probably best known for her groundbreaking run with John Romita Jr. on Daredevil.

After achieving industry acclaim for DC’s award-winning “Manhunter” feature in Detective Comics, Walter Simonson moved to Marvel where he introduced multiple characters and concepts from both myth and outer space during his revered run scripting and penciling Thor. He collaborated with his wife, Louise, on both X-Factor and Wildstorm’s World of Warcraft, later returning to Marvel to illustrate Brian Michael Bendis’ Avengers.

Since his beginnings with Ann Nocenti in Longshot (which earned him a Russ Manning Award), Arthur Adams has most often displayed his distinctive and detail-intensive art in miniseries or one-shots (including several Uncanny X-Men Annuals) — along with brief but memorable stints on Fantastic Four, X-Factor and other titles. He co-created “Jonni Future” for Alan Moore’s Tom Strong’s Terrific Tales, and Dark Horse Comics has published his creator-owned Monkeyman and O’Brien. Renowned for cover art at Marvel, DC and elsewhere, Adams has also illustrated trading cards, posters and shirts, among other products; his art can be found in toy design, film advertisements and a series of X-Men-themed Campbell Soup labels. Jeph Loeb’s Hulk series featured a string of issues in which Adams provided interior art.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some of the greatest comic book ever, EXCELLENT collection!!

B.E.T. · February 18, 2024

This is an absolutely wonderful collection of Arthur Adams' Marvel Comics work. The printing quality is very good all around and the content is nothing short of stellar. Art Adams deserves every ounce of the substantial quantities of praise that have been heaped upon his name over the years. His work is completely loaded with style, energy and appeal. He's also an excellent storyteller. He's got it all. It's not surprising that he is one of the most influential comic book artists to have ever worked in the medium. Can you tell I'm a fan?Anyway, back to the collection itself. As a long time fan/reader of Mr. Adams' work, I found this collection to be very satisfying. It brings some of the greatest work of Arthur Adams' career, arguably the greatest, together in one place, plus it has a ton of extra material. The extras really made this collection refreshing. For example, there are pages and pages of photocopies of Arthur's pencil pages, which are really a treat to see. My only complaint about some of the pencil pages is that I wish they were reproduced at a larger size, a minor gripe. The book also features covers, pinups, trading card art, toy designs and other odds and ends, all delightful. This book is a total must for Arthur Adams fans and it's also an excellent introduction to his body of work for the interested, less familiar readers out there. This is great comic book work, period. If you have any interest in the medium of comic books, cartooning, illustration, visual storytelling etc. get yourself a copy right now!! Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must buy for Arthur Adams fans

Nice collection of classic Marvel stories by Art Adams. A really great bonus for comic art fans is the numerous black and white pages throughout the book which show his rough sketches and layouts, and pre-colored art. The only thing it's missing is all the amazing more recent cover art he's done the past few years.

The Art Adams effect on Marvel

P.C. · April 19, 2025

I picked up the Marvel Universe by Arthur Adams Omnibus because, like the title probably suggests, the book showcases Adams' influential work at Marvel Comics. There’s no denying that the dude burst onto the comic scene in the 1980s and made an impact. His fresh style made me an instant fan, so I figured this book would be a perfect way to collect everything he did for Marvel during his heyday. At 1200 pages, the omnibus includes his breakout Longshot mini-series, his two-part New Mutants/X-Men Asgardian blockbuster, and his tongue-in-cheek "New Fantastic Four" arc that features Spider-Man, Wolverine, Ghost Rider, and Hulk. While some stories hold up better than others, Adams' art consistently shines throughout.Outside of the obvious stories we remember, some highlights in the omnibus also include:- Cloak and Dagger #9 -- lob a softball pitch to Art Adams because the characters play into his strengths, so it’s great to see what he does with them- X-Factor #41-42 -- a playful, somewhat flawed plot leaves an impression because Art Adams makes it visually exciting- Web of Spider-Man Annual #2 -- a hidden gem! -- showcases Art Adams' take on the wall-crawler and the antics of the shapeshifting Warlock- X-Men Annual #12 -- another classic example where a mediocre comic story succeeds thanks to the presence of killer Art Adams art- Extensive extras -- pencil art, character designs, and unused covers that provide insights into Art Adams’ processAdams' tenure at Marvel still impresses the heck out me, especially considering his relatively small body of work while there. Sure, Michael Golden predates him by a few years and has a strikingly similar style, but  Adams just came onto the scene at the right time to make his impact. He made male characters look like "gigachads" before that was even a thing and gave female characters a cartoon sexiness before Jessica Rabbit even came onto the scene. And, of course, he popularized the crosshatching technique, making a cool, distinctive flair to rendering that an upcoming 90s wave of artists imitated. For fans of Adams or 80s/90s Marvel, this omnibus is worth checking out. It captures a period when Adams shaped the visual language of superhero comics for years to come. It serves as both a nostalgia trip for longtime fans and a reminder of why Adams became such a figure in the industry.
