5.0 out of 5 stars A cosmic story that redeems an era of Marvel I hated

A.W. · June 3, 2023

When I first got into marvel comics, the incursions were all the rage. I was not a fan. Aside from the hopelessness and contrived actions, if an infinite multiverse could be destroyed, why had it not already happened. Infinity possibilities meant the multiverse would have already been destroyed, and that likewise some universes would have survived. It didn’t work. But by using the classic lore of Galactus to reframe the end of the seventh cosmos as a cycle, suddenly the event is retroactively more plausible.but how is the story on its own? Each cosmos in this story is interesting and distinct, I particularly liked the fourth cosmos. Love the naming scheme of its denizens and the exploration of foils. The twist of the book’s villain is solid, and I appreciate his powers and how he was one of the first marvel characters. It feels right for a story about going back in time to the origin of marvel. Likewise despite the complex nature of this cosmic story, the writing was clear enough that I was able to grasp the concepts easily. Overall a fun exploration of marvel cosmology, and one that inspired me to buy the follow up mini.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best issue of Defenders for Dr. Strange fans

A solid comic with good art and storytelling superior to other Defenders issues for Doctor Strange fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars De los mejores comics del 2021

5.0 out of 5 stars An Artistic Journey Through the Essence of Comic Books

J. · May 9, 2022

What we have here is an odd start and a surreal ending that goes over peoples heads especially a story involving the Eternity Mask. There's just so much potential to be found in Marvel's rich history to pick up and develop. But beyond that is a journey through the cosmos that push random characters to their very limit. Just the scenes involving Cloud are mesmerizing and enlightening as each chapter that passes looks like an awakening. Some characters and their dynamics are pretty good to witness, like Silver Surfer's interactions with the baby Galactus and him getting replaced by Galan's bombastic mom Taaia. And the artwork by Javier Rodriguez is just perfect in how it expresses situations without missing a beat of the story. The scenes with that four faced hulk are phenomenal. This is one title to pay attention to for the epic scale alone.

Man I wanted to love this! The cosmos cloud character was my favorite--they use the same pronouns. BUT. There was sooo much dialogue and art packed so tightly, very little splash pages ( and there were so many reasons for splash pages in this one!). For me, just way too much story crammed in there. Little time to stop and look at the art--which was crammed into the already crammed panels. Hard to appreciate the awesome colors and characters. Ended up returning it. But damn. (Maybe since I'm not a marvel or DC fan and don't care about story and continuity that I couldn't appreciate the story more, I admit that could be a reason. But still!!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Soooooooo good

p.d. · February 22, 2025

This thing blew me away. It's in the same league as Silver Surfer: Black, Doctor Strange: Fall Sunrise, and History of the Marvel Universe (and compliments each of those series very well).I was skeptical during the 1st issue, with how Al Ewing was approaching The Tarot, but he won me over 100% by the end of it, being the Marvel-head that I am. What seemed very superficially esoteric at the beginning, unfolded issue by issue with a firm grasp of understanding, and in such a way that a reader with zero interest in magic will still learn a lot in a way natural to the flow of the story. Ewing weaves concepts from Hermeticism, Kabbalah, The Tarot, Lovecraft, and CMYK philosophy (lol) easily together with a fun, heady, high-stakes, action/adventure pop comic book. I've always loved Javier Rodriguez, but I didn't realize how much I loved his art until this book. I haven't actually sat down to make a list, but I think he might now be in my Top 10 comic book artists. He's so fluid, dynamic, and fun. I think even his black and white line work comes across as colorful. Also there's a character named Taaia, and not only is she the best new character to come out of Marvel in ages, but she is the greatest and funniest homage to Jack Kirby's Fourth World I've ever had the pleasure of reading. This book works on so many levels. It definitely deserves to be released as a Marvel Treasury Edition. Looking forward to reading Defenders: Beyond!
