Owen C. Duffy is a motive power instructor in the Truck and Coach program at Centennial College in Ontario, Canada. In the past 19 years, he has taught several thousand apprenticeship and post-secondary students as they pursued a career in the diesel field. He holds Red Seal license qualifications in truck coach, automotive, and alternative fuels, and he has over 40 years of experience in the industry. He holds a college certificate in adult education and has been active in technician curriculum development and deployment at the college level. He is also co-author of Fundamentals of Medium/Heavy Duty Commercial Vehicle Systems (Jones and Bartlett Learning, 2017). '
Scott A. Heard holds an Ontario College diploma in Heavy Duty Equipment Technology, and Red Seal Certificates as a Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Truck and Coach Technician, and Automotive Technician. Generally passionate about all things related to Heavy Equipment, Scott spent 25 years in the field working as a technician for Caterpillar and a large construction contractor before becoming a motive power educator, author, and program coordinator at an Ontario Heavy Equipment College. Scott has also participated in developing the National Occupational Analysis for Heavy Duty Equipment Technician and has been part of several Provincial Curriculum development committees.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource but Watch Out for Errors. Verify Calculation Information With Other Sources
I love the sheer volume of information there is in this textbook. As a first edition, I am not surprised by the large amount of typos and incomplete math explanations. But at this low price for such a thick textbook, I am inclined to overlook it. That being said, for someone who does not have any prior mechanical knowledge those typos could cause some confusion. Overall it is a really good book though for new students. One thing I am a little frustrated by is the lack of answers to the review questions. They are stated in your typical ASE Tech A vs. Tech B format but they don't have answers or explanations of the answers like study prep manuals do. In my opinion that is a gap in teaching. There is no reason to hide that information from students unless the only thing you care about is letting lazy teachers use the book as a quiz resource. And yes I am aware that the industry is full of lazy/incompetent teachers. I encountered them a lot when I wasted my money on a tech school. As someone who is just trying to expand my knowledge and maybe prep for further career opportunities, I am an adult and I don't need to be treated like a high school student playing "stump the chump". The whole point of training information is to teach people the right answers to their questions about a subject. A lot of these review questions were vague and could be misinterpreted. Not a good luck for training. That's the only reason I gave it 3 instead of 4 stars. If the repeated text and confusing typos were fixed in the later editions and answers given to the review questions, I would give it 5 stars just for the sheer amount of information you are getting with such a cheap book. (Yes in the grand scheme of textbooks, this is relatively inexpensive.)All of that is to say that it definitely will give you a great starting point and introduction to the trade and even help you with farm equipment if you are trying to get a handle on repairing your own stuff. Lots of theory and great full color diagrams explaining hydraulics and advanced hydraulics, electronic control systems, track drive systems, power transfer systems and even a little welding and rigging info.The book is over 1400 pages, it's a lot of knowledge. Just make sure you verify calculations with other resources and double check what the sentences with typos and errors are trying to convey.

My son just started his heavy duty mechanics certification and I could not find this text anywhere. The price was reasonable and the delivery was super fast.
