“Hannah masterfully details the unraveling of a family.” ―Associated Press on Night Road

When Jo is in rehab wondering about her life, I was crying. I can relate to the woman in this story. Jolene is a soldier, a wife, and a mother, who goes off to war. I was a sailor, and a mother who went off to war. She was injured in a helicopter crash, I was injured on a mission while visiting some tribal leaders. Jolene lost her leg and one of her hands was injured, I didn’t lose my leg but I had to have a total hip replacement and the numbness has never left my leg. I will forever deal with the pain in my right leg. My right hand was broken and it took many years for it to heal.I think the nightmares are the worst, they never really go away.I would like to thank Kristin for tacking such a difficult topic as PTSD (she also does this is her book The Women). PTSD is something that many returning soldiers and sailors have to deal with. Our servicemen and service women need our support and prayers always. The struggles they deal with can last a long time.
5.0 out of 5 stars Too Awesome!
Well to say Kristin Hannah knocked this one out of the ballpark is a gross understatement!! The details of the characters, the various situations this book entailed almost made me feel that I was in Washington State with Jolene and her family or over in Iraq when Jolene was deployed there wondering when the enemy fire would start again. It's rare to hear about a story (fiction/otherwise) involving military life relative to females in the service and their unwavering call to duty. This book does that and more--I would highly, highly recommend this book to anyone who not only enjoys reading but is ready to get a dose of truth serum concerning life in the military from a female perspective. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars but that's the limit (sad face)--it is my hope that the author or someone would put this on the big screen; yeah, it's that worthy of such a platform.
4.0 out of 5 stars Moving
I liked this story about being a mother & balancing a marriage to the backdrop of the Iraqi War in the 2000s. It was moving without being unrealistic or soppy.
5.0 out of 5 stars Home Front
Honestly I've not read another book that made me actually CRY, but this was close to home. My son was military & deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq in 2000 after 4 yrs & an accident he was medically discharged. The biggest tragedy after serving our country (as happened to Jolene) is that the military does not prepare you to come back into society. My son struggled but thank the Lord he made it through. This is a story of emotions, confusion, anger & uncertainty after coming home from military combat that needs to be told so people can understand what our vets endure. This was a tragedy ridden, but heartwarming story and one of the best books I've read in a long time.
5.0 out of 5 stars No matter the topic, Ms Hannah does it well
Being married to a Vietnam veteran with both visible and invisible scars, I can say that this book hit the mark really well, as far as how, military service, pride, and commitment to one's fellow soldiers goes. I liked the side story of Michael's law practice and the highlighted case he works on.As always, this book is full of heart. Ms Hannah brings out the good, the bad, and the ugly of love, pain, abandonment, and renewal. Another great read.
5.0 out of 5 stars How does she do it?
I enjoyed my first read of Kristin Hannah so much, that I just had to try another one. The story plays out just like I would guess in real life. The happiness, the sadness, the fear. As I sat reading, the words would start to get blurry. I thought it was because I had been reading so late. I was crying! The emotions written throughout these pages just enveloped me, and I was part of the story. I can't wait believe to read another!
4.0 out of 5 stars a book that deepens our understanding
This was a good story that will help those of us who have been so lucky as to not serve in war or have loved ones who have encountered this have deeper understanding and empathy for the sacrifices others have made for us. Worthwhile read.
5.0 out of 5 stars One of Her Best
This has been a very well written piece of work. Wow! This book blew me away. Very informative and heartfelt book. It touched my heart in so many ways. I have very seldom cried while reading a book but this one really got to me and I just absolutely loved it. Way to go Kristin!
An excellent and enjoyable read

Great read
Great book
Inspiring book for women
I liked everything about this book ..the author’s deep understanding of human character and the challenges women face when they try to live their dreams and choose careers dominated by men.All Kristin’s books have inspired me so much and helped understand how privileged we are right now and relate with the tragedies many people faced in the past in wars etc and many continue to face in the recent wars in Russia ,Ukraine,Israel,Palestine..seems that the modern world has not really been as progressive and humane as we would have wished it to be
A MUST READ
I am really into Kristen Hannah's writing and I am chalking up her books that I have read and adding more to my reading list. Great writing, truly. Characters that are real. But the crux of her stories is the truths that weave through the pages. Hannah puts war on a closer footing for those of us who have never been near a battlefield and treats the characters realistically. There's a lot of heart in her books but nothing twee or kitsch. Cannot recommend this book highly enough. The only reason I gave it 5 stars is because there was no facility to give it 10. You are doing yourself a favour reading it.
Very good
