GOODREADS CHOICE AWARD WINNER

“I loved it." ―Stephen King

From Edgar Award-finalist Jason Rekulak comes a wildly inventive spin on the supernatural thriller, for fans of Stranger Things and Riley Sager, about a woman working as a nanny for a young boy with strange and disturbing secrets.

Mallory Quinn is fresh out of rehab when she takes a job as a babysitter for Ted and Caroline Maxwell. She is to look after their five-year-old son, Teddy.

Mallory immediately loves it. She has her own living space, goes out for nightly runs, and has the stability she craves. And she sincerely bonds with Teddy, a sweet, shy boy who is never without his sketchbook and pencil. His drawings are the usual fare: trees, rabbits, balloons. But one day, he draws something different: a man in a forest, dragging a woman’s lifeless body.

Then, Teddy’s artwork becomes increasingly sinister, and his stick figures quickly evolve into lifelike sketches well beyond the ability of any five-year-old. Mallory begins to wonder if these are glimpses of a long-unsolved murder, perhaps relayed by a supernatural force.

Knowing just how crazy it all sounds, Mallory nevertheless sets out to decipher the images and save Teddy before it’s too late.

Review:

5.0 out of 5 stars Great spooky story, love the twists and the drawings!

S. · February 5, 2025

Loved the book. So many twists that I did not see coming! The child's drawings throughout the book made it so much more creepy and intriguing. The main character is a recovering addict, clean for over a year. Her sponsor finds her a great paying job as a nanny for a wealthy family. The family consists of a mom, a dad, and one child; Teddy. Teddy is an excellent child who loves to draw and seems to have a very active imagination. Teddy even has an imaginary friend named Anya, who he draws pictures of. The MC feels like she's hit the jackpot when she lands the nanny position. She gets to move into the guest house (which she has all to herself), the pay is incredible, Teddy and her really bond, she gets along great with Teddy's parents and they make her feel like almost a part of the family, she gets to swim in their pool, and goes for runs around the ritzy neighborhood, and even meets the handsome guy who mows the family's yard and they seem to hit it off great! However, things take a sinister turn when Teddy's drawings get creepier and creepier and each one put together with the next seem to tell a dark and ominous story. Children Teddy's age should not be drawing pictures like these! Then she meets the odd woman who lives next door. The strange neighbor tells her about the ghostly legend of the previous tenant of the guesthouse she's now living in. A beautiful young foreigner, named Anne, who comes to live with her distant family and moves into the very guest house she's now living in. The young woman is beautiful and catches the eye of suitors, but to the disappointment of her family, she's uninterested in following the rules of the social norms, and keeps to herself and her drawings. She enjoyed exploring the wooded area behind the property and drawing beautiful pictures. Until one day it seems she goes missing and is never heard from again. What happened to Anne?Could Anne have any relation to Teddy's drawings and imaginary friend Anya?

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick and fun read

S. · August 6, 2025

There’s nothing new or exciting happening here, but the main character is well-drawn, the plot moves along at a nice clip, and the illustrations add a nice touch. It’s the kind of book you stay up too late to finish. Well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great story made even more chilling with pictures.

This is not my usual book but I could not put it down! The use of the illustrations made it so interesting and the story kept me invested in figuring out the next piece of the puzzle. A great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Mystery

Enjoyed this creepy mystery a lot. The illustrations added an unusual richness. Lots of unexpected twists, a perfect vacation read. Interesting characters make the supernatural plot line less unbelievable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read!

4.5 stars.I wasn’t sure how to start this review without giving anything away but here’s a no spoiler take! This book was both eerie and aggravating (in a good way!) it really kept me engaged from start to finish. The illustrations throughout the story were chef’s kiss 👨‍🍳💋. If you’re usually an audiobook listener, I’d highly recommend reading the physical or Kindle version instead, or at least following along with a copy. The pictures truly bring the story to life and add an extra layer of intensity you’d miss otherwise. At first, I thought it was shaping up to be your typical horror plot, but then the ending hit! That’s when the real emotions kicked in. I was shocked… and even a little sad (can’t explain why without spoilers!).The story was executed really well. The pacing, the character development, and the unique personalities made the whole thing feel believable and immersive. I’m glad to have this on my shelf and would absolutely reread it, especially if I were doing a buddy read with someone who hadn’t read it yet. Now, about the epilogue, I have to admit, after such a strong ending, it felt like a bit of a drag. Necessary, yes, but I think some of the details could’ve been trimmed. Still, since it’s at the very end, it didn’t take away from how strong the rest of the book was.**Just to throw it out there the book arrived fast and in good standing no missing pages or anything. Beautiful cover as well**

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty bad, but kept me reading

I.r.t.m. · February 14, 2025

I bought this book right after (or while) I read THE LAST ONE AT THE WEDDING by the same author. I really enjoyed THE LAST ONE AT THE WEDDING despite finding most of the characters super annoying. It is a compelling story that kept me wanting to get to the end of it.Not so much with this one.First of all imho it is just a totally ridiculous story. No, I did not expect it to be realistic or something that could happen irl. This involves the supernatural, so that wasn't what I found ridiculous. What I did find ridiculous was basically every character. They weren't just super annoying like the characters in THE LAST ONE AT THE WEDDING they were also pretty poorly written and everything from their actions to the dialogue was awful. There is no way any person in this book would have acted the way they did under these (or any) circumstances.I don't want to give any spoilers away, but I am giving this book three stars because like THE LAST ONE AT THE WEDDING I did read to the very end because I was interested in finding out what was going on. The difference was that I read it while rolling my eyes basically every time any character did or said anything. To sum up, I am done with my Jason Rekulak phase, and don't think I'll be looking for any further books from him.The one huge plus to this book was the pictures. They are fun in a creepy way, and a nice addition to the book. Other than them I don't have much good to say about this one.I noted that a few other reviewers mentioned that they felt the author wrote right wind rhetoric, and while yes, I can see how one would pick that up in the book, no I don't think it was intentional, and didn't come off as malicious to me. Mallory's religious leanings were a bit too cutesy for me, but I am not an addict. I think it is common in addicts to turn to religion as another crutch for them to lean on when they get off drugs, alcohol, etc. Just all around super annoying book and characters.

Alles super

For our May’s book club pick, we dove into Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak and WOW, I loved it!From the very first page, Rekulak’s pacing had me completely immersed in Mallory’s world. The eerie mystery unfolds so seamlessly that you barely realise how deep you’re getting until you’re too hooked to put it down. One of the things I loved most was that every single thing you learn about the characters has a purpose by the end. Nothing is random, everything ties back in, making for such a satisfying read. And the twists! Every time I thought I had it figured out, I was completely wrong in the BEST way. Rekulak does such a fantastic job of leading you down one path only to surprise you with something even better.URGH and the epilogue. I cried. The way I cared about these characters really surprised me.If you love a thriller that keeps you guessing and delivers a truly rewarding ending, this one is a must!
