Jessica currently lives in her native state of Colorado with her husband, three-legged cat, and baby daughter, who was born during the making of Just Right: Searching for the Goldilocks Planet.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Adventure Through the Eyes of a Tiny Jumper!

K. · October 9, 2024

A Day in the Life of a Backyard Jumping Spider" by Jessica Lanan is an absolute gem! My daughter (4 years old) and I were completely captivated by this beautifully illustrated, informative, and surprisingly endearing story about a tiny jumping spider navigating the world around her. The attention to detail in both the artwork and the facts about jumping spiders is impressive, making it both educational and engaging. The story strikes the perfect balance between excitement and learning as Jumper embarks on her day, encountering various backyard creatures along the way. Lanan's illustrations bring the natural world to life in a way that sparks curiosity and admiration for even the smallest creatures. It's a wonderful way to introduce children to the wonders of nature, and it definitely changed how we look at spiders!Perfect for kids who love animals, adventure, or just a beautifully told story about the natural world. Highly recommend for every child’s bookshelf!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect book. Spiders are amazing.

V. · October 12, 2025

What a perfect book! The illustrations are beautiful. The story is very sweet and true to life, and I love the way she makes the children feel what it would be like to experience things. So much information about spiders in the back. I hope this book will help people to see that spiders are not something to be afraid of. My granddaughter and I had a little, jumping spider in our house last Spring. It was really fun to watch it and learn about it and now we loves this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Watercolor art and storytelling at its finest

As a fellow artist, I loved the way this author handled the art in the book. I wish more books were done this was instead of the computer art that is around now. It kept my son's attention the entire time. He loved it! I loved it! Also, the back section explaining all the spider details was great. Perfect level of info. Parents can skim over it with their kids and focus on the parts that their kids like the most. Perfect!!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a beautiful book! I’m so glad I bought it.

I had been hovering over this book for a while and I’m glad I finally pulled the trigger. I can’t get over how cute this book is. Can’t wait to read it to my son tonight. The illustrations are beautiful. It’s wonderfully written. I hope my son enjoys it as much as I do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Fun!

The book’s point of view is great. The art is beautiful. A fun book for a kid who loves bugs and/or the garden.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't kill spiders!

P. · June 17, 2025

This is a great book. More books like this about animals that people think they don't like or are fearful of should be written to show them what they don't know. I am over 70 and I loved it. I went on to read about people who keep jumping spiders as pets. I liked seeing the spider facts at the end of the story, especially when the author wrote to not kill them. I will probably give this book to my youngest grandchild on his birthday. He already has a spider in his house who he keeps track of and he is not yet 2 years old!

5.0 out of 5 stars Super cute book

Such a cute book. My toddler loves when i read him this. Teaches about jumping spiders but has a cute story behind it. I highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning and expansive art!

A.C. · April 21, 2023

This is a truly beautiful book- every page feels like a whole painting instead of just an illustration of the text. Every page feels like it continues beyond the edges of the paper, and the author has done a fantastic job of showing us the world from the perspective of a tiny spider. I still remember that it was a children's book that helped me, as a kid, to not be afraid of spiders, and I think this book can do the same, and at the same time, it will draw in the kids who are fascinated and excited by them. The back has something like a demonstrative index, full of educational content, and scientific facts and details about jumping spiders. The huge four page foldout spread that is painted to show you what and how the spider sees the world is also really cool!

Wonderful pictures and story!

A.B. · January 19, 2024

This came so quickly! I am talking about Caldecott medals and doing a mock awards with students and this book fits perfectly! The pictures and beautiful and the story is informative. I love the extra information about spiders at the end!
