Girl in the White Van

Description:

A teen is snatched outside her kung fu class and must figure out how to escape―and rescue another kidnapped victim―in The Girl in the White Van, a chilling YA mystery by New York Times bestselling author April Henry.

When Savannah disappears soon after arguing with her mom’s boyfriend, everyone assumes she's run away. The truth is much worse. She’s been kidnapped by a man in a white van who locks her in an old trailer home, far from prying eyes.

And worse yet, Savannah’s not alone: ten months earlier, Jenny met the same fate and nearly died trying to escape. Now as the two girls wonder if he will hold them captive forever or kill them, they must join forces to break out―even if it means they die trying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspenseful thriller for young adults!

Savannah lives with her mom in her boyfriend’s house. Savannah’s mom met Tim online and the two of them moved to Tim’s community and into his home less than a year ago. Savannah is tired of her mom meeting men online and uprooting their lives every time she thinks a guy will be great. Tim is physically rough with her mom but only verbally rude to Savannah. He makes fun of the fact that she attends Kung Fu classes and just wants Savannah and her mom to wait on him and do everything for him. Savannah is a loner at school and she’s decided that it’s not worth making friends if she’s going to be moving again anyway. She enjoys her Kung Fu classes and there’s a teenage boy that she gets along with really well, Daniel Diaz. After class one evening, the two stay after to mop the dojo floor and walk out together. Daniel offers to walk Savannah home but she tells him her mom is picking her up. This isn’t true because her mom works the swing shift and Savannah plans on walking home on her own. Before she knows what happened, she’s kidnapped and thrown into a van. No one realizes she’s missing for a day and then her mom talks to the Student Resource Officer, who happens to be Daniel’s father. Meanwhile, Savannah is put in an RV with Jenny, who was kidnapped by the same guy ten months earlier. Jenny tried to escape at the beginning but was mauled by the kidnapper’s guard dog. The two teens try to figure out a way to escape and do everything they can to help each other. Young adult horror full of Bruce Lee quotes and inspiration! 5 stars for a suspenseful thriller for young adults!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book. My 10 year old loved it.

My 10 year old son loves this author. This book is a bit heavy for younger readers. Great book, just be aware that this is not some kind of innocent fairy tale. It’s the closest to a “thriller” I’d allow him to read at his age but he LOVED reading it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I thoroughly enjoyed it!

After running away from an argument with her mother's boyfriend,  Savannah's night took a turn for the worst. Lurking right outside her kung fu class is her kidnapper in the white van. Snatched and taken to a hidden trailer home, Savannah soon realizes she's not alone. Ten months earlier, Sir, the kidnapper in question, dealt the same fate to another teenage girl, Jenny. Savannah and Jenny's time is running out, but with every waking second, they will do anything to escape, even if they die trying.April Henry is a seasoned author with a thriving collection of YA thrillers. THE GIRL IN THE WHITE VAN is no exception to the greatness of works she's written over the years. Kidnapping synopses are one of my favorite components in a novel. I thrive while reading about the unknown between the capture and the kidnapper. Anything could happen in this type of atmosphere, and that, my friends, is the scariest feeling. In that regard, April Henry's detailed characterization of Savannah contributed a powerful presence with the utmost bravery. Her fighting spirit contagiously shined through, leaving me in awe of her tenacity. The anxious thrill of not knowing what would happen to Savannah and Jenny swiftly had me racing through the pages. My only criticism would be that the novel was too short. Even with an array of multiple POVs, and a fair amount of time with Savannah and Jenny, I would have liked to see the kidnapper's backstory developed a little more. Don't get me wrong; I'm satisfied with the overall narrative, but I would have loved it even more if I had the chance to dig deeper. Other than that, I highly recommend THE GIRL IN A WHITE VAN if you're looking for a fast-paced thriller with a consistently compelling plot.

5.0 out of 5 stars On the edge of your seat!

I got this and finished it yesterday in one day because it was such a page turner! I liked the subtle elements that let me make predictions along the way and that each chapter was told from a different character. I'm amazed that this was inspired from something that actually happened. This book would be excellent for a teen reader (middle or high school) as it is totally engaging with its suspense and action.

I absolutely love this author’s books. She takes young people and puts them in situations that are a nightmare in themselves. Savannah is a young girl who is kidnapped. She is taken out to an old trailer where she finds Jenny. She is another kidnap victim and has been held for ten months. Savannah and Jenny are completely different. Savannah takes Kung Fu and so she fights back. Jenny seems to have just given up until she meets Savannah. As they try to escape knowing the danger the tension is brought to a whole new level. Just like in her book, “The Night She Disappeared” the author has given us a character in Savannah that is willing to fight back. This action keeps the story moving forward. I love how her characters are strong girls, or girls who find the strength to do what they didn’t know they could do. I had to wait until the summer to read this because my students handed it from one to the other. I can make sure to get this book into the hands of my students.
