Dealing with Feeling: Use Your Emotions to Create the Life You Want

Description:

Instant USA Today Bestseller

From Marc Brackett, founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and author of the bestselling book Permission to Feel, comes an essential guide for regulating how we respond to our emotions in order to transform our lives.

Success in virtually every aspect of life―career, friendship, love, and family―is determined mainly by one thing: how we deal with emotions. In your most challenging moments, how did you respond? Did you fly off the handle? Were you paralyzed by indecision? Did you engage in behaviors that undermined your best intentions? Or did you exhibit grace under pressure and flourish? How you responded likely shaped what happened next. But emotion regulation isn’t a fixed trait, as many believe. It is a set of skills and strategies that must be learned, practiced, and refined over a lifetime.

Marc Brackett examines his own challenges dealing with emotions, explains the latest science of emotion regulation, and provides a set of practical, evidence-based strategies to help us use our feelings wisely to nurture healthy relationships, achieve ambitious goals, and experience greater well-being. At the heart of his message is acceptance: There are no bad emotions―only emotions we don’t understand or know how to direct in positive, intentional ways.

The good news? We all have the power to decide how we will respond to what life throws at us. By honing our emotion regulation skills, we can increase our chances of achieving success in all facets of our lives.
Dealing with Feeling will show you how to work with your and others' emotions―not against them―so you can become the best version of yourself and lift others up too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading For What Contemporary EQ and Its Skills Can Be

F.C.M.I. · October 27, 2025

This new step in written form by Marc, it's the right complement to follow Permission To Feel. I'm lucky to have found PTF as that was the step that I took to both start unpacking my own EQ, but also find a voice and a way to bring the concepts of RULER and the Mood Meter to those who I coach and teach. I had no previous training with these concepts but now they are ingrained into how I think about my own emotional life, and how I have reformed how I think about emotions when I do facilitation. These have been essential. So, to see the new book come out, Dealing With Feeling, I felt elated. Another extension of what Marc is doing, let me at it. I have since bought and finished DWF, and can now appreciate how the concept of PRIME and Co-Regulation are essential to editing the work I already have in place. This idea of co-regulating others, and the nuance and deep skill that is required to that well--I now appreciate how important these skills are, and already thinking about how I will bring these skills into some further iteration for when I coach/teach EQ again early next year. And selfishly how these concepts can start working for me in my own emotional world. The chapters on Strategies, this is where the book is going to help a lot. I find that people want to start small, and they want basic, practical things they can do to make a shift, to become better at EQ. So, the book is very helpful in laying these out, in pretty good detail. Adopting these and playing with them is the real next step. But, I wanted to get a review out and make sure that Marc's work is both advocated and supported. The world we live in right now is crying out for EQ--to start replacing the deficit so many (like me) have inherited. And to start being leaders of EQ in a world where it's starving and missing. Marc, thank you for these books. You have changed me, those who I have touched and will continue to influence through the thinking you are creating.

This book is a must-read! If you want to understand—and more importantly, gain control over—your own emotional regulation, this is the book for you. Marc Brackett presents the latest research in an accessible and engaging way, while openly sharing his own challenges, making the book both relatable and insightful. Evidence-based strategies for emotion regulation are presented in a way that readers can immediately apply to their own lives. I especially loved the concept of the “Meta-Moment.” Dealing with Feelings will show you how to work with your emotions so you can become the best version of yourself.

His brilliant key point: everything that has ever happened in your life, good or bad, has been the result of how you responded to the emotions you felt. Control that and you can determine the course of your life. But it ain’t always easy!

5.0 out of 5 stars The fact that he describes the feelings we all have and doesn’t feel this may be right for everyone.

I started reading the next day after I received the book (which was delivered the next day). I was totally impressed right from the actual beginning of the writing of the title. It provided so much insight that I never thought about. The writing was genuine and I could tell he was so passionate about the information he provided. Only 15 pages through, but I can’t wait to have the time to pick up the book again! You will not be disappointed!

K.L. · September 16, 2025

This is a great book about emotions that I think just about anyone could benefit from, even if you think that you've already got full control of your emotions. There will be bits in here for each individual, with different outlooks on how you're possibly looking at things the wrong way and how a simple mindset shift can dramatically change things.I went into this book with a lot of curiosity and finished it feeling like I had a bunch of new tools to try out as time goes forward. As a mother and someone who struggles with a lot of triggers when it comes to emotions, I found all the different stories, examples, and possibilities presented in this book incredibly helpful. I hope to take all I've learned in this book and become more emotionally aware calmer.Marc has a way of writing that makes him feel like a friend catching you up on his life and how things are going. I think this approach will be beneficial to most readers and really help you absorb the lessons it gives. Highly suggest this one!

Regulating how you respond to your emotions is an integral piece to success, as laid out by Brackett. We don’t get to decide what happens to us, but we do decide how we respond; we can learn to understand what we are feeling and use it wisely to get the desired outcome for a more fulfilling existence. This is a very basic primer introducing the reader to these concepts, and walking them through how it works. I would say that this would be an excellent read for readers who are easily overwhelmed by their emotions, or those who have difficulty identifying their feelings and need a few building blocks to start with. Brackett's prose is very approachable and framed so that the average individual can engage with the concept, making it broadly readable. His expertise is evident, but he uses a lot of examples and case studies to illustrate every step.
