The Prodigy: A Novel

Description:

From award-winning sportswriter John Feinstein, The Prodigy is a YA novel about a teen golfer poised to blaze his way into Masters Tournament history―and he’ll face secrecy, sacrifice, and the decision of a lifetime to get there.

Seventeen-year-old Frank Baker is a golfing sensation. He’s set to earn a full-ride scholarship to play at the university of his choice, but his single dad wants him to skip college and turn pro―golf has taken its toll on the family bank account, and his dad is eager to start cashing in on his son’s prowess. Frank knows he isn’t ready for life on the pro tour―regardless of the potential riches―so his swing coach enlists a professional golfer turned journalist to be Frank’s secret adviser.

Pressure mounts when, after reaching the final of the U.S. Amateur tournament, Frank wins an automatic invite to the Masters. And when the prodigy, against all odds, starts tearing up the course at Augusta National, sponsors are lined up to throw money at him―and his father. But Frank’s entry in the Masters hinges on maintaining his standing as an amateur. Can he and his secret adviser―who has his own conflicts―keep Frank’s dad at bay long enough to bring home the legendary green jacket?

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Feinstein does a good job of driving his tale down the fairway by putting his protagonist through a series of spectacular feats and comebacks on real courses and filling out his cast with actual renowned golf pros, journalists, and officials . . . Well below par. . .in the very best sense.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“A definite must-read for golfers and perhaps other sports fans. Readers unfamiliar with golf will learn a lot about how the tournaments operate, and any reader will feel compassion for a teen viewed as a commodity in an adult world.”
―VOYA

“Though some may not equate the sport of golf with suspense, Feinstein creates realistic tension, dramatic comebacks, and astounding feats that will leave readers rooting for the protagonist. . .Add this compelling story to libraries with sports fiction fans.” ―
School Library Journal

“[Feinstein] has written a golf-themed tale intended for a young adult audience―though this reviewer believes golf enthusiasts of any age will enjoy it. . .Feinstein is a gifted storyteller and his narrative moves at a swift pace.” ―Met Golfer

5.0 out of 5 stars Oddly good ya golf book

B.K. · February 7, 2023

I bought this just because the cover looked kind of cool. No other reason. I don't normally get into sports books. But, this one is really good. If you have a teen who plays golf, this would be a good buy for them. Although, I will say that the author does lose a little authenticity with his substitutions for the in jest language that all of us golfers hear routinely. But I get it. I am buying this for my nephew because he is a high school golfer and I can see this resonate with him. It brought me back to my own varsity golf days.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book

Some said it was for young adults but I am 77 and I loved it. It’s a great story about life and the challenges and temptations you face. Well worth your time and money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peak Behind The Scenes

I devour everything from Feinstein. Especially golf. His writing brings you into the moment and he must be well trusted to put the likes of Spieth, JT, Mickelson, Rory etc to be added to this novel. It gave it a sense of reality. John’s ability to set the scene and give you that privy fly on the wall experience is above reproach. Would dig a sequel here to hear more about Franks journey. Thanks John!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read!

T.C.G. · April 15, 2019

I read this book the weekend of the 2019 Masters and it’s as fine a golf novel as can be found, excellently blending reality and imagination. Yes, it’s a ‘morality play,’ but true to golf at The Masters. I’d read some critiques that pondered why unnecessary political commentary was included, but that appeared nitpicking to me. Read it. Then go hit some balls and read some more. It’s a great perspective of PGA pros and a useful reminder that good sportsmanship and ethics is what the game of golf is all about!

4.0 out of 5 stars It was an enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sports novel

T.F. · November 27, 2018

What a wonderful novel. It may have been a YA novel but for someone that is decades past being in the YA group I loved this book. Being a golf fan didn't hurt. But, it was such a fun read with a great ending that kept me guessing. I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a great novel. Being a sports fan, let alone a golf fan, is secondary to just enjoying a fun story.

Fiction lacking depth

M.B. · October 16, 2022

Enjoyable read however the lack of inclusion of the amateurs staying in the craws nest will annoy any serious golfers.
