About the Author

SARAH J. TRACY is Professor and School Director of The Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University. She developed the “Big Tent” model for high-quality qualitative research and has published more than 100 scholarly monographs, in publications such as Communication Monographs, Management Communication Quarterly, and Communication Theory.

The care, love, and attention to this third edition shines through clearly. The thoughtful ordering of chapters and project building blocks create an accessible learning experience for readers. I loved the inclusion of many new visuals, and I especially appreciated the consistent attention to critical self-reflexivity and intersectionality throughout the text.Perhaps most of all, I wanted to highlight and appreciate the human element in Dr. Tracy’s writing, which balances practical how-to's with personal stories and humor. In some ways, I feel like the textbook reads like a conversation between old friends or mentors and mentees—it's warm, constructive, and encouraging. Whether you’re a qualitative newcomer or expert, this is an excellent resource.

Loaded with recent examples, Dr. Tracy's book is perfect for all levels of instruction. It's one of the best textbooks I've read, authored by a scholar who has encyclopedic knowledge of qualitative research.
