I don't think I've ever read a book like this. Kass reaches out and grabs attention by speaking directly to the fully human experience of being an educator, doing teaching, witnessing learning and being a part of a community that does that work. It engages elements of my self as an educator that I don't need to bring to reading a professional text. The elements that are too often left hungry for wisdom, insight, connection that is not separate from the specific, practical, concrete experience of doing teaching and learning as a human person. In the introduction, Kass gives us permission not to read it straight through, in part because she understands what teaching is, what the experience is, and how teachers learn. In part because she knows this is new for us - to experience a text like this written by and for an educator who believes teaching is not only intellectual work, but human work, heart work, and justice work - not one without the others. Phew! it is a lot. And I am so grateful to have it.

In contemporary education publishing, there are often two extremes: books that offer lots of eye-catching examples and strategies but little to no substance, and overly academic books that offer a menu of theoretical perspectives but that have little to offer educators who reside in K-12 spaces on a daily basis. Kass Minor's Teaching Fiercely exists in that sweet spot smack dab in the middle, and does so in a way that both amplifies the work of scholars of color and offers important lessons based upon the author's own experience working in NYC public schools. This is a book to read slowly, in community with others dedicated to the "long game" of advancing joy and justice in our schools, both private and public. I'm grateful that this book exists in the world and look forward to using it in my own work alongside equity-minded colleagues!

This book is an amazing guiding light for teachers stepping into the work of joy and justice. Lots of moments to reflect and process the work. Kass pours her heart into this work— and it is evident from the first page. It is tangible for teachers and can be navigated easily through those “just right moments” when you need a specific topic or activity to explore. You won’t be disappointed for sure. She has lots of personal moments in the pages teachers can connect to, which is vital in this work as some are navigating it alone. You will feel empowered as you navigate the chapters— ready to create that edu-credo for what is best for ALL kids.

Kass Minor had gifted the teaching profession with an authentic and heartfelt body of work filled with her expertise, research, knowledge, experiences and vision of what education could be. This is a must read for educators who wish to make learning what it is supposed to be: a space for integrating joy while simultaneously using our agency to fight for justice. I recommend every school to get this book to study practice this work in order to witness the fierce transformation that could happen when students are centered and trusted. Kass writes of the importance of naming and holding metaphorical "North Stars", points of guidance and direction, close to us in this march towards justice and joy in our schools. As I read "Teaching Fiercely", it, along with the brilliant Kass, quickly became a most formidable "North Star". I feel as if Kass has put into eloquent words and actionable steps my heart, soul, and inner teacher spirit. She has written with clarity, and is living out with purpose, what I've been floundering in these past several years. And now, here it is, a way forward!

Kass brings such a unique twist to this social justice book! It’s not like the others I’ve read. While it is filled with important history and facts, it is also chock-full of practical classroom ideas, relatable anecdotes, and opportunities for reflection. As educators, we often don’t have time to breathe, let alone reflect, but it’s crucial to our own joy and justice as well as that of our students. So, thank you, Kass, for an opportunity to learn and grow fiercely!
