As ever with the Manager Tools body of work, this book provides step by step, detailed, data-driven guidelines that will improve outcomes for everyone that follows them. The guidance in this book seems so obvious (once you've read it), that there is a risk that the reader will under-appreciate how good it is. Don't. Seldom do business books offer such clear thinking, so lucidly conveyed. Buy it. Read it. Follow it. And then once you've done so and hired team members, get 'The Effective Manager' to equip you to maximise their performance.

I recommend this for anyone that participates in hiring decisions. I work in a government setting with a very strict hiring process and I was still able to put some of these ideas into practice right away. It might take a while to move the total process in this direction, but I'll do what I can.

Many will say "I rarely get to hire someone so why should I read this book?". Exactly because you do it so infrequently, you must read this book. When you do get to hire, you have to do it right or you and your team will suffer. Mark lays out an elegant and actionable framework for hiring. It's a must read with my directs.

I liked the manner in which the material was presented. Very well written, very logically organized and it was done in a style that was extremely easy to consume and understand.The general principles are also on the whole sound. You do want to find the right people to hire for the job and it can be a big mistake to hire the wrong person. However, the rigid nature of the rejections that the author proposes seems to be out of the middle of the last great recession when businesses could be picky since every job posting resulted in hundreds of semi-qualified candidates. These days, with wage fluctuations being what they are, that simply isn't the case, so it might be time for an updated edition of the book where the author addresses how to effectively hire when you don't have a plethora of choice of good and great candidates to choose from.
