5.0 out of 5 stars Significant Contribution to the Industry
The Interviews were particularly interesting and insightful. The author’s interview technique pulled out years of experience that helped shape the problem and the solutions presented. This book provides the platform to display the experience of this generation of industry shapers.Having spent my career in the chemicals industry, I see parallels. Building a new process plant did not have creative design element but bringing along a new product introduces competing goals between R & D, Engineering/Construction, and Operations/Maintenance. This book may serve the roll in architecture that Robert G Cooper’s work on product innovation has had for manufacturing industries. The hints and guides are well conceived and assured to be beneficial such as Forty Questions. Everyone that wants to see a team successful should look at the Measuring Relationships tip daily.Mr. Lefevre has made a significant contribution to the industry that he obviously loves.
5.0 out of 5 stars Read it NOW!
This book is an insightful revelation of the difficulty in managing the building design process. From that premise, the author gives understandable advice on processes that work coupled with successful approaches with real life interviews from reliable and experienced practitioners.Lessons learned is a popular phrase meaning we avoid repeating mistakes. Mike Lefevre presents lessons learned so we can get ahead of the curve. This should be required reading for all architects to get experience from reading before encountering in a project. It reminds me of the saying: "Good judgement comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment." Good judgement is to read Managing Design before you have a bad experience.
5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Resource
What an immense and impressive feat Mike LeFevre has pulled off with this book. As a former facilities/project Owner, I am intimately aware of how hard it can be to "herd cats" and manage the design effort. Still, it might be even harder to capture best practices for doing so in a thoughtful, organized, and all-inclusive way ... but LeFevre has done it. The organization I now lead, the Construction Owners Association of America, thinks enough of Mike and this resource that we've asked him to record an introductory video for our 8-hour class for Owners entitled, Design Process Management. Great job, Mike ... the industry thanks you!
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic insight for emerging professionals
The book is a great resource for learning more about how to recent advances within the AEC industry has affected practices in their efforts to design and construct buildings. The interviews was a great way to learn from a range of professionals and there are many lessons that I plan to apply to how I work with other companies, owners, and within my own firm. The style of writing is also done in a way that is easy to relate to. Cannot recommend enough for leaders in design, construction, management, or owners!
5.0 out of 5 stars Owners, contractors, architects, educators: Let’s Do this!
They say the teacher appears when the student is ready. This book arrived in the mail yesterday and I was up all night. It has made me laugh, cover my face with my hands (“why didn’t I get this earlier?!”), and put into words a built-in tension between design and production I was wrestling with. I’m delighted to get more clarity on those dynamics, and to see approaches to handle them with positive outcomes for the client, contractor and design team. Highly recommended.Thank You Michael LeFevre, FAIA Emeritus, and contributors Barbara White Bryson FAIA, Emily Grandstaff-Rice FAIA! #ManagingDesign
5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Thorough and Detailed Perspective
Great perspectives on how others see the process. I work in the construction industry for a small trade contractor. This book helped me understand how designers think - and how they see us. This book outlines how we can be better partners to them. An easy read, both for professionals - and those who aren’t. Very helpful. (Wish I would’ve read it years ago!) I purchased a few of these for business associates.
5.0 out of 5 stars A look behind the curtain
With the pace of a good thriller, Managing Design offers candid insights from a broad range of professionals who've spent their careers trying to crack the nut of meshing the creative process with the hard realities of delivery and execution. I wish this had been written decades ago!
5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive & Thoughtful Resource for Design & Construction Professionals
This thoughtful resource provides a highly detailed and comprehensive text for design and construction professionals alike - I have used it in both areas of the industry! The diverse interviews enliven the stories surrounding design practice and make this book all the more timely and relevant to today's challenges and solutions. Whether you are seeking a manual to better execute design operations or a resource to better understand this complex industry, look no further.
