5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Chess Book

B.S. · October 10, 2025

Chess for Dummies, by James Eade, has a lot of worthwhile information. The book describes some good-to-know openings, as well as some good-to-know defenses. And the strategies, protocols, definitions, and resources round-out this good-to-have book on chess. I highly recommend this source to all who are first time entering the chess realm.

5.0 out of 5 stars A strategic purchase

K. · June 13, 2025

Easy language to understand, good examples nice book for gaining the basics

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative Book - very Helpful

C. · January 4, 2023

I purchased this mainly for my husband because I got a Chess Set this year for my husband and I to play but he's never played chess before, whereas I was playing chess all my school years and some beyond. For myself it's been awhile since I've played so I thought a brush up in print would be nice for me too.I will say that my husband is feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the information this book contains. He's having to digest it in pieces. In hindsight, I should have reviewed basic rules with him and played a couple beginner games before throwing this much information at him. You might want to keep that in mind. Basics first - then read the book.I'm enjoying the book as a brush up though, it's very informative and it goes through points that if it's been awhile since you've played is quite nice to be reminded of.Overall, I'm very happy with the book but it's almost too high level at times for a beginner who is reading prior to ever even trying to play the game. That's the only reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5. However - the absolute plethora of information fit into this book is amazing. This is my first "for dummies" book and I'm very pleased not to feel like an idiot for buying.Truly this is an excellent book that misses not one thing.

I teach chess. I bought several copies of this book to loan, gift, or sell to my students. This is not the most current edition but it is fine and costs less. This books covers the basics of chess. It's a gem!

4.0 out of 5 stars All great but for the last part

P. · September 23, 2024

This Dummies volume is written, or at least reviewed, by a chess master so you cannot go wrong. The only issue is the later sections that give you the games of top players. These games are notoriously difficult to explain and those who needed this book as beginners are not going to understand its back pages for years, if ever. By this point, of course, the book already reached its value, so again, you cannot go wrong.

Covers the Basics
