5.0 out of 5 stars Overall though this has been a great reference to learn more about areas I do not ...

s. · January 28, 2015

In all honesty I wasn't expecting a book of this magnitude. It was helpful beyond all measure, while it does not go into depth on certain topics it is VERY VERY thorough in introducing main themes prevalent in Macro Trading and the intermarket correlations. What was interesting is Greg actually tries to quantify all aspects of risk in order for us traders to see how he manages it. While I would have preferred a stronger section on Modern Portfolio Theory the only detraction I can think of is in his foreign exchange section. I don't believe enough breadth was put into this section for the primary reasons.Yield Curves and the role of the central bank - hardly any mention if at all a mentionAn in depth section on Q.E. and it's effects.ERM - I think there is a small paragraph on it.Overall though this has been a great reference to learn more about areas I do not have experience in such as commodities.I will DEFINETLY buy more books of Greg Gliners in the future. Fantastic ability to present new materials.

This book had a ton of great information and really gave great depth into what global macro is all about. I am mainly a technical trader and don't pay too much attention to fundamentals so some of this stuff was way over my head and I didn't have a deep desire to learn about. I'll definitely give it a second read through after I finish hedge fund market wizards. www.engulfingthemarket.com

A great balanced read that both the sophisticated trader/investor will reference as well as the novice can learn from and thoroughly enjoy. Provides an easy to read and interesting balanced perspective in an environment where macro has become increasingly important to incorporate into ones investment process. Highly recommend!

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Read For Those New To Macro But Not Much New For The Seasoned Trader

A.B. · October 27, 2017

Gliner has an impressive background, having formerly worked at AQR and Tudor Investment Corp. Considering his resume I was a little disappointed in how shallow the book digs into the subject of Global Macro. All in all, it's not a bad book, hence the three stars. It's a decent cursory overview of the macro game, just don't expect to come away with something new if you're familiar the topic. Great for those just starting out but I wouldn't recommend it to a seasoned speculator. If you're interested in something with more substance then I'd suggest sticking with the classics and reading Soros' Alchemy... Lefevre's Reminiscences... Dalio's/Bridgewater's whitepaper on How the Economic Machine Works... Sperandeo's Trader Vic... Schwager's Market Wizard series... Brandt's Diary of a Professional Commodities Trader... and both books by Drobny. Also, if you're interested in macro trading specifically, then I'd highly recommend checking out the work done by Macro Ops. They have some good links/books/references macro trading resources. Here's a breakdown of how the book is structured.Overview of Global Macro:Overview of Global Macro StrategiesTrading Process, Sizing Trades & Monitoring PerformanceBack-tests, Queries & AnalogsBuilding blocks of Global Macro Trading (Equities, Fixed Income, Foreign Exchange, Commodities)Technical AnalysisSystematic TradingGlobal Macro Trading Foundation:Foreign Exchange in Global MacroEquitiesFixed IncomeCommoditiesThe Role of Central Banks in Global MacroEconomic Data Releases and DemographicsOne particular section of the book that I found helpful though, was Gliner's section on query building and monitoring one's own performance. He suggests including a 'conviction level' that ranges from 1-10 on one's trade log. I've long toyed with doing something similar and think the idea could be really helpful to assessing your decision-making abilities over time. Here's Gliner on the subject:“Let’s assume a 0-10 scale, where 0 is no conviction and 10 is the highest conviction. If for instance, a pattern emerges where you are making money on most of your lower-conviction trades (5-6 score) and losing money on your high-conviction trades (8-10), this could be indicative of a confirmation bias. Conversely, if you are consistently losing money on your low-conviction trades, perhaps you should stick to high-conviction ideas.”Overall, decent book. Good starting point for those looking to dip their toes into the global macro game. But if you're intimately familiar with macro then you won't find much new here.

Greg manages to clearly and concisely explain the most critical elements of macro trading – including systematic investing, technical indicators, fundamental data, and the critical role of risk management and discipline within portfolio construction. He demystifies the various flavors of global macro trading (including, for example, Trend Following and Risk Parity), while also diving deeply into asset-class-specific products and strategies, providing not only high-level information regarding the strategies, but also specific guides for implementation. Overall, the book is an excellent tool for any macro investor, suitable for both a seasoned trader as well as a novice hoping to develop an expertise in the craft.
