5.0 out of 5 stars An intimate and scholar work
It is always hard to rate a new biography among many others, all of an equivalent standard and presenting only subtile variations of the career of a man who is certainly one of the main political figures of the twentieth century.I am Jewish and as the proverb tells us "to know your enemy to better defeat him...", I must admit that all my life I have been fascinated by the incredible and unlikely rise of Adolph Hitler. Trying to understand how a human being can grow so full of hate and, in the same token learn about the process of never underestimating your potential enemy, led me to read all what I could find about nazi Germany. This attraction (should I say this dark attraction?) I have towards what a fanatical will power can bring upon mankind has been countless times noted in the major biographies that I read about Hitler (John twentieth, Ian Kershaw's, Richard J. Evans's, Alan Bullock's "parallel lives" & Hitler's study in tyranny among the major ones)But we should not fool ourselves : Hitler was maybe the one to blame in "catalysing" a policy which lead to the death of millions but without the few fanatics among 42% of Germans who voted for him it is unlikely that his dark phantasms would have been fulfilled. This is where Volker Ullrich's new biography of Hitler offers a capital point among the ones I read : it states univocally that the people who could have stopped his ascension to power had criminally under-estimated him. This is the key point : yes they were criminals as much as some politicians today who play the "ostrich policy" in refusing to see things as they are, namely in Syria, Iran, North Vietnam, Sudan...I think this is a key statement in a biography which is complex, extremely interesting and offers some information not found in related biographies about the inter-relationships of the players surrounding Hitler.Yes, the likes of Chamberlain, Daladier, von Papen, Hindenburg and so many others were in a way moral criminals of having not understood that they were dealing here with someone living totally out of their world of good conventions morality & humanism.I think the way V. Ullrich describes Hitler, the private man and the public tribune brings out that "ominous' depth of a man who could rally millions and anaesthetise a civilised country. In this respect Volker Ullrich's Hitler is more "intimate" and at the same time more frightening than other biographies stating plain facts from afar. This is a recommended book and I am looking forward to the second volume.
5.0 out of 5 stars great biography
Volker Ullrich gives an authorship viewpoint that is objectively derived, and untethered to the politicized agendas of other WWII scribes. He is also concise, often terrifyingly so, in laying bare the facts of the ascent of the Third Reich, a plague cast upon the German people and the world by Hitler, abetted by the committed, radicalized cohorts surrounding him. The book also explains the complicit approval and condonation of the German people, some of whom were passionately approving, though often naive to the full scope of the murderous movement. Others, as the book shows, were not vested or committed, but carefully making their way while showing at least default levels of approval, in order to thrive - or at least survive - in this extreme environment of upended history. Hitler, the man, is also probingly presented at all stages of his life though the range of years of the book. His actions, temperament, and personal life, from his youth in Austria up through his absolute seizure of power, are all presented in revealing and relevant detail. The book ends its documentation of Hitler's ascent on the eve of Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939 - the first phase of WWII - which the author marks as the starting point of the demise of Hitler and the regime. This is a well-written and uniquely clear-eyed accounting of Hitler and the fascination and destructive energy he generated.
4.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for the Trump Era
I think this was an instructive book to come along at this particular time in American history. The question "Could it happen here?" needs an explanation via "How did it happen there?" To be fair to Germans as a nation, I think one must at least agree that the times were much harsher for the workaday German in the 1920's than for the average American in the 2010's. Nevertheless the same indictment of the populace applies there and here: a cowed press, representatives with party-interest ahead of national-interest, and a tendency to look the other way when it was someone else who is being harmed. The parallels only go so far. It's hard to imagine in this day and age that Kristallnacht or the Night of the Long Knives would happen in the US without a general uproar, but I have to wonder if it did, how long would it take for us to simply close the shade, get back to the sofa, and resume watching Game of Thrones? What I found particularly enlightening was the explanation that Hitler grasped the mob mind, understood that facts were irrelevant, and knew that simply repeating the same meaningless phrases over and over (think "fake news") would eventually drag the majority along with him, if not as supporters, then at least as compliant spectators. If I have a knock on the book, it's that it was a bit dry, i.e. "This happened, then that happened." I would have like to heard more about everyday life in post WWI Germany and perhaps how the economic misery led many to simply opt out of the political process, much as people here say things like, "Oh I didn't vote; they're all crooks anyway."The ultimate lesson is that this kind of pure evil can arise and co-opt an entire country simply when basically decent people decide to shrug their shoulders and go about their business. The rise of Hitler is the paradigm of the saying "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing."
Hilter … Volume 1
Well Done overview of the man. 800 pages details Hitler until his 50th birthday in April 1939. Looking forward to reading Volume 2.
Libro en mal estado
Quiero enviarles fotos del libro que recibí, me gustaría un cambio por otro idéntico pero en mejores condiciones. Las hojas por el costado vertical están mal cortadas de imprenta, están dispareja.
Excellent biography
Ian Kershaws two volume biography has always been considered THE biography of Hitler. This two volume Biography By Ullrich offers a new, updated perspective. An extremely interesting read.I've already read to two volume paperback version, and now intend to Read Both Kershaws and Ullrich's biographies again in hardback.
Excellent Read
I found this book to be an excellent read. If you are a serious WWII aficionado, I highly recommend this book and Volume 2 by the same author. The prose is well written and easy to read. The research is impeccable, so much so, you do not want to put the book down.... I think the word I am looking for is, RIVETING! Most subjects covered are rich in information and facts and the author injects little details I have not read in other works. This book covers the early years to the start of the war. Book 2 picks up from there and goes to the end. I found both books well worth purchasing. I suggest you purchase the paper back versions. The hard cover version is pricey and is poorly bound (Book Club binding) where as the paperbacks are high quality and more in keeping with quality you would expect for the price. One last thing about the author, his style and depth of research is similar in scope to anything I have read on the subject by Joachim Fest. Fest continues to be one of my favourite WWII historians. I believe Volker Ullrich is in the same league.
