The Pilgrim: SAS Who Dares Wins

Description:

"An incredible story of courage and commitment under fire." — Bear Grylls

The Pilgrim is the book the MOD tried to ban. It is a rollercoaster of an autobiography of Colin Maclachlan, known for his appearances on shows like Channel 4’s SAS: Who Dares Wins and Channel 5’s Secrets of the SAS.

His autobiography starts with his troubled childhood and escape to the military where, as a fifteen year- old boy, he grows up and matures into the SAS soldier we now recognise. Early chapters describe physical, mental and sexual abuse and Colin could easily have ended up in a home but despite the odds and with the help of both the Children’s Panels, NSPCC and some diligent schoolteachers, Colin escaped to the army. Colin had to get special permission to join the army at only fifteen years of age and goes from being a young vulnerable and damaged boy to a capable soldier through preparation for the first Gulf War and joining the oldest and most senior infantry regiment in the British Army, The Royal Scots. From operations in Northern Ireland to being the Queen’s Butcher to Colin’s first TV cameos on Soldier Soldier and Gladiators, Colin’s stories and anecdotes are both exhilarating and hilarious.

Colin then describes the arduous SAS selection process, the hardest and most gruelling military selection process in the world. Colin describes in some detail what most have never even heard in this secretive world where Colin goes from a course of what seemed hundreds down to only six percent in six months! The reader is then taken on a never seen before description of life as an SAS operator. Daily life in an operational squadron and the operations, missions and training involved all described in detail. Colin was part of Mountain Troop, D Squadron who were to be involved in some of the most high-profile and dangerous missions in SAS history.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read

I had heard of Colin but didn't know much about him and was looking forward to reading his book when he announced it was coming out. It was delayed twice in the U.S. for release, but I patiently waited. The book finally arrived, and I dove right into reading it putting the book I was currently reading on hold. I thought it was rather funny that Andy McNabb did the forward for Colin's book as it was his book I set aside.Colin has a comfortable, conversational writing style that kept my attention and had a good pace. There were places where he jumped time that were a bit confusing, but I managed to figure it out just fine and not lose track of the story as a whole.I did enjoy Colin's book and his life journey from a young kid to the present. What he had to endure and deal with what not easy. Many other reviewers noted Colin's resilience, and he definitely had it and so much more! However, I must admit I felt a little disappointed when I finished the book. At times, it felt like certain events were a footnote and simply mentioned but no real substance behind it. There were sections that he could have expanded on that would have given a fuller picture or helped the reader understand a situation better,As with any book written by former military, the military has its fingers involved to ensure that identities, past missions and other details aren't revealed. I totally understand why this is done but wonder if that is what happened here in that it caused this "footnote" feel to the book in some sections. This book was my introduction to Colin and after reading it, I honestly want to sit down for a leisurely dinner to talk and laugh on end for hours with him. I truly want to get to know more about this resilient, humble, funny man who accomplished something that few do. I guess I'll simply have to wait for his next book. *lol*

Resilience at its best.

I purchases this for my partner, and here are his comments:This book is truly inspiring, motivating, uplifting and in places absolutely hilarious. It is a remarkable lesson in the art of Resilience, true grit and determination. Its a bit of a cliche, but I couldn't put it down. A brilliant book, well written despite the obvious battle with the MOD wanting to ban it. That in itself is real resilience. Well done Colin. Highly recommend. Tim.

Each chapter takes you on an emotional rollercoaster—there were moments of laughter that made me chuckle out loud, and there were poignant reflections that brought tears to my eyes. What I found particularly compelling are the powerful lessons woven throughout his narrative. At the end of each chapter, Colin shares insights that resonate with anyone striving to overcome their own obstacles, big or small. From teamwork and leadership to embracing failure and pushing beyond your limits, there are invaluable takeaways that we can apply to our personal and professional lives. This book is a reminder that resilience is not just a trait; it’s a skill that we can cultivate. Massively redacted

Well written, but far too short...massively redacted by the MOD. Nothing about his operations in Sierra Leone or anything about his capture in Iraq. Overall a decent read but could've been a whole lot longer an more interesting.

Good, but a bit Bermuda Triangle

S.J. · November 3, 2025

I agree in the fact this book is too short - my guess would be it’s probably been chopped by some organisation. It’s well written and there’s some eloquent story but, there’s just something missing that stops it being a five. I want more from an outlier’s story. Wait for paperback and definitely read it then.

Amazing story which could easily have been called Resilience

S. · August 31, 2025

An honest and open account of how difficult it is to pass selection into SAS and how your life before and after relates to it. Lots of motivational tidbits and also highlights how hardship breeds resilience. Would thoroughly recommend this very readable book.
