There are several authors known to all fans of this time and place, all excellent reading; educational and entertaining. But, there is a cookie-cutter quality to all of these series.I applaud these Sertorious novels because they do not follow the beaten path. I do not need anymore lengthy, repetitive descriptions of human intestines spilling onto a warrior's lap. I am tired of the predictable subplot where the lady love is cruelly assasinated. I am tired of page filling descriptions of an age cleaving a man from skull to crotch.Mr. Davis, in his Stertotious novels, understands that when a reader asks for the time of day, he hasn't asked how to build a watch. I highly recommend these books by Vincent B. Davis II. You get the full story at a reasonable pace. Hasten Thy Story, someone said. I see Hemingway as a model for these fat-free historical fictions. Highly recommend.
4.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Enjoyable!
Wow! Such an exhilarating and engaging story of history! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and applaud Mr. Davis for his due diligence in creating such a masterful piece of historical fiction. It was exciting getting to know Sertorious and the many other characters so accurately portrayed. It was intense witnessing the political tug of war, excruciating battle scenes and diverse cultures in the Roman regions of the times. This book has clearly been carefully drafted, written and produced. It is one I heartily recommend to anyone who wants a good book to read!
5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT READ!!!
I am going to be very blunt and direct in my review of this book, so buckle up...The ONLY reason I bought the paperback rather than the kindle was to support the author because I know him and wanted to support him. Honestly, I did not have very high expectations but wanted to give it a chance because this novel is also in my favorite genre: historical fiction.Again, I really did not know what to expect, I thought that maybe I would partially enjoy this book. I happily admit that I was WRONG!!! I was hooked into this story from the onset, I immediately felt as if I were there with the protagonist, my mind's eye very quickly began the mental picture...no...movie... of everything as it played out... and this feeling lasted throughout the duration of this book. I quickly came to hate to antagonist and their band of flunkies...Mr. Davis' writing style is magnificent, the transitions between narrators within the chapters are flawless and the evolution between events have a natural flow that make this a very good read. He even went as far as to maintain the integrity of the era by using Latin terminology on some things. Have no fear, there is a glossary in the back that will interpret those words and terms into modern English. However, you won't use that for long because the style of writing will allow you to immediately know what is being talked about without having to flip to the back of the book.Furthermore, Mr. Davis uses his military experience and knowledge a great deal in the story where appropriate, which is phenomenal (I've read books where the author tries to emulate military life and all I can do is shake my head and think... "Nope"). The only regret I have about this book is that it ended, and it's an ending that leaves you thirsting for more... I look forward, with exuberance, to the next installment of this series. This young man is going places within the literary world.
3.0 out of 5 stars Boring Read
I gave this book a 3 star rating only because it is well written. However, it is a very boring read, I'm on chapter 5 and no action what so ever. I made the mistake of buying the first 3 books because reviews said it was a gritty, action packed series. I'm hoping something along the lines of Simon Scarrow, Under the eagle type action. If you like reading about ancient Rome without the action of war fighting or legion references this is your book.
5.0 out of 5 stars exciting and action-packed
A real page turner but with heart. The main characters are well drawn and come to life over the centuries
4.0 out of 5 stars Good story, well told.
This book is a gripping tale, well told. I only lament that careful proofreading, which honors an author's labor, appears to be a dying art.
5.0 out of 5 stars Really Good
I wasn't sure what to expect with this but I really love it. The characters are believable & so is the story. I wonder is Rome was truly like this. It seems so real.
4.0 out of 5 stars A Soldier's Tale of Ancient Rome
With the fall of the family’s fortune, young Quintus Sartorius uses his families connections to join the Roman Legion. Possessed of a quick wit and acute powers of observation, he moves up in rank landing a prized leadership position in the Roman Legion. However, his brush with Roman politics leaves him with a more balanced view of Roman political power. He decides to step down in rank to that of an ordinary soldier in the legion. It is from this lowly position that he moves up in rank by demonstrating his leadership and skill in combat. This is a story drawn by an author with a mastery of the Roman historical period and the knowledge of the men at arms of this period. In this sweeping narrative, the author gathers us up and takes us along on this great adventure. I am looking forward to the additional adventures of Quintus Sartorius as the author continues bringing us additional novels in this new series.
Fascinating Period of History

The detail of the period is phenominal. Highly recommended.
One of the best books I’ve ever read
I am a precocious reader.I read at least five books every week. And this ranks right up there.I know about shared hardship and risk. This book made me feel it
It pulls you right In !
I enjoyed getting lost among Imperators, consuls, legionnaires, Roman politics, warfare, customs, attitudes, et al. The Man With Two Names is an engrossing read for anyone interested in historical fiction.
Excellent read.. Looking forward to part 2
Found the book very engrossing, much detail into the workings of Julius ceasar early days, interesting characters to keep the pages turned
A good read
I read both books in this series, so far, and thoroughly enjoyed them. Unusually and somewhat refreshingly the books are written as Sertorius'memoirs hence the series name The Sertorius Scrolls and therefore written in the first person. The books concern the early life of Quintus Sertorius who would become a Roman senior statesman. The first book contains Sertorius' initial experience of Roman politics in an attempt to seek relief for the starving inhabitants of Nursia, his home town, and his involvement with the Consular election as a client of one of the Patrician candidates where he learns of bribery and corruption associated therewith as well as the great difference between Patricians and the rest of Rome's classes. He cannot accept what he finds which is politics at its self serving worse and joins the renowned ex Consul and General Gaius Marius whose son in law is also a Consular candidate. The second book is concerned with Sertorius' life in the army with initially Marius' son in law, also a General, and then Marius himself fighting Rome's greatest advisories, the Germanic tribes, during which 90,000 Roman soldiers lost their lives in one battle, culminating in the defeat of the Cimbri.I look forward to the third book in the series anticipated at the end of 2019.
