GRE Vocabulary in Practice

Description:

GRE Vocabulary in Practice is the only prep book designed entirely to help you bridge the gap between traditional vocabulary study and application to the test. When the GRE was updated in 2012, one of the biggest changes involved the vocabulary section. Instead of focusing on dictionary definitions, the exam now tests words in the context of challenging sentences and short passages. As a result, it's no longer sufficient to memorize long lists of words -- to succeed on the GRE, you must also be able to identify subtle clues and navigate relationships between complex ideas. With comprehensive strategies for tackling both Text Completions and Sentence Equivalences, as well as more than 300 GRE-style practice questions accompanied by in-depth explanations, this book teaches you exactly what to expect when you take the exam.

(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } This book is very detailed and thorough. It covers sentence completions and sentence equivalent questions. You get tons of practice with those. The only con is that it doesn't cover any reading comprehension questions. Otherwise a superb publication. Kudos to the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars A More Complete Approach to GRE Vocab Questions

V.K. · September 26, 2017

I tutor the GRE and often find that students have a one-sided approach to preparing for its fill-in-the-blank questions: memorizing vocabulary. In my experience, students also need to work on technique for those kinds of questions, because they often miss them for reasons other than not knowing the definitions of words. If you're worried about text completion and sentence equivalence questions, this book should be a valuable tool. Not only will it help you learn vocabulary, but it provides high quality advice about technique for vocab questions - technique that will be an essential addition to your vocabulary knowledge. If you've exhausted the verbal questions provided in the ETS GRE books and computer tests, this is my top recommendation for supplementary material: the 300+ practice questions within are extremely realistic (much more so than those written by the more popular GRE prep companies like Manhattan Prep, Magoosh and Kaplan). In my study plans, you'll find all my GRE prep recommendations.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Almost-perfect Vocab Workbook

H.N. · June 13, 2025

For such a hyped vocab book, I was a bit disappointed by the paucity (i.e., virtual non-existence) of "in-context" explanations for most words. Mastering vocabulary is not just about memorizing the words' definitions, but also about being able to actually apply the learned words to one's own writing. For this reason, I don't find the mere listing of words on pages 58-71 helpful at all (and as an unintended consequence, I feel this practice only encourages memorization and rote learning). For the next edition, I really hope that the author adds examples and illustrations to ALL the listed words. The explanations of "commute" and "constitution" on page 70 are really nice, and should be exemplary.Commute - to reduce a penalty (e.g., to commute a prison sentence)Constitution - build (e.g., a football player has a solid constitution)

5.0 out of 5 stars Erica Meltzer Does It Again!

C. · September 8, 2017

Disclaimer: I’m biased. I think that everything Erica Meltzer publishes is amazing. Her latest book, GRE Vocabulary in Practice is no exception. I’ve tutored for the SAT, ACT, and GRE for more than ten years. Erica Meltzer’s books express so many of the concepts and strategies that I’ve shared with my students. That may sound self-serving, but these are tried-and-true methods that have proven successful many times over. This book contains invaluable practice material for the GRE. Even if you are a whiz at vocabulary, you’ll find that the way that the GRE tests it is tricky and requires a different skill set. Further, authentic GRE tests are scarce, and not all GRE textbooks are created equal. Many books present content that doesn’t effectively simulate that of the GRE – this book absolutely does. Another lacked any form of vocabulary list. This book covers the GRE vocabulary quite comprehensively. It would serve as an essential and welcome addition to any GRE candidate’s study plan. I will most certainly incorporate it into my lessons going forward.

5.0 out of 5 stars A valuable tool and great companion for anyone studying the GRE

A valuable tool and great companion for anyone studying the GRE. As someone who used this book towards the end of their studying, it was incredibly useful for preparing for the vocabulary questions in the qualitative reasoning sections, which were perhaps the only questions I consistently had issues with. The book provides simple exercises to develop strategies for solving questions before going into problem sets sorted by difficulty. Afterwards, there are plenty of mixed problem sets for further practice. Practice problems are great: they not only test knowledge of vocabulary, but they also accurately test the logical reasoning necessary to do well on the reading sections.Overall, would recommend for anyone prepping for the GRE.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superlative/peerless/choice book for dissatisfied/vexed/thwarted students

T. · September 26, 2017

Meltzer's GRE vocabulary book is characteristically excellent. She adroitly tackles the complications of the lately redesigned vocabulary section, focusing on advanced strategies for students who have progressed beyond the Princeton Review and Kaplan mainstream materials. I would not recommend anything else to students capable of the work and prepared to see their scores increase. The book necessitates effort, but those willing to perspire will be rewarded.
