5.0 out of 5 stars Your Health Insurance Company Doesn't Want You to Read this Book. That's why you should.
DELAY DENY DEFEND: Why insurance companies don’t pay claims and what you can do about it. By Jay M. Feinman.Delay, Deny, Defend offers a compelling deep dive into the realities of dealing with the insurance industry, shedding light on the complex and often frustrating processes behind claims. The book brilliantly illustrates a range of cases—spanning health insurance, car accidents, and property coverage—and tracks how these systems, initially designed for protection and support, have shifted into mechanisms that often prioritize profit over fairness.Feinman, a professor of law, unpacks the tactics many insurance companies use: delaying claim responses, denying valid claims, and defending their decisions aggressively in legal battles. He provides readers with essential insights into how to try to navigate these challenges effectively. The book doesn’t sugarcoat the reality—it makes clear that fighting against these tactics can be a long and arduous process. There came a time 20 or so years ago when, like the banking industry, the insurance industry sold its soul to the devil of profit. This book is the classic that explains how the industry has employed top consultancies to devise strategies to ensure that the consumer making an insurance claim gets paid as little as possible or better still not at all. The title delay, deny, defend is one of those strategies. Another is to pay a fortune in advertising to create the myth that your insurance company will be there for you when you need them...... very often they won't. They are not your friend. Their sole objective is to maximize profits for their shareholders and maximize the pay of their senior executives.... no matter what human misery they cause along the way.Overall, Delay, Deny, Defend is an eye-opening read that serves as both a warning and a guide. It highlights the necessity of understanding the system and approaching it with clear eyes, even if it doesn’t offer a definitive resolution to the broader industry problems.

The book brilliantly illustrates a range of cases—spanning health insurance, car accidents, and property coverage—and tracks how these systems, initially designed for protection and support, have shifted into mechanisms that often prioritize profit over fairness. What stood out most to me was the book’s ability to unpack the tactics many insurance companies use: delaying claim responses, denying valid claims, and defending their decisions aggressively in legal battles. It provides readers with essential insights into how to navigate these challenges effectively. The book doesn’t sugarcoat the reality—it makes clear that fighting against these tactics can be a long and arduous process. While the book equips readers with tools and strategies for approaching claims with diligence and caution, it also leaves an undeniable sense of frustration. By the conclusion, it’s evident that a systemic solution to these issues remains elusive. Nonetheless, it arms readers with a solid foundation of knowledge, which is critical for anyone needing to file a claim and wanting to avoid falling victim to these tactics.Overall, Delay, Deny, Defend is an eye-opening read that serves as both a warning and a guide. 4.0 out of 5 stars Exhaustive Treatise on Insurance Company Claims Cost Mitigation Tactics
More than just confirming what we already know - that insurance companies loathe paying claims - this book drives home just how much time, effort, money and creativity has gone into achieving lower claims costs. The author dives (too) deep into the history of the transformation of claims from a customer service operation/expense to a profit center. Topics addressed by this exhaustive (ing?) treatise on the subject include: (i) the conversion of mutual insurance companies to private/public stock companies - ultimately shifting motive to shareholder profit, (ii) the McKinsey studies and recommendations that initiated and overhauled the insurance industry's view of claims, (iii) regulatory history, (iv) computerization and data driven claims management systems, (v) impact of fraud - real and 'manufactured', (vi) legal tactics. A full expose of the comprehensive, cunning, calculated and conniving methodology employed by all facets of the insurance industry (particularly home, auto and health) to minimize claims expense. While learning the history of the subject and the surprisingly numerous strategies employed by insurers to reduce claims costs was certainly interesting, the specific "advice" offered was generic and lacking.
3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but redundant
The book is informative and a fairly good read; however, the 'messaging' becomes redundant as if, repeatedly, attempting to get a point across.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting. Learned a lot about the Health Insurance industry
I learned quite a bit about the insurance industry reading this book. Took a while to find it after the young man shot the insurance executive. That's how I learned about it. Glad I found it because now I can see why I've had to stop taking the only product that helped lower my cholesterol. Had the rude awakening last December when I tried to get it refilled and learned my health insurance carrier raised the yearly deductible and a monthly prescription was going to cost $200.00 a month until the deductible was met which would have been in November.
ottimo libro
il libro offre una visione reale della triste realtá nel Nord America ed in Italia la situazione è persino peggiore.
Excellent information
Excellent information . Have more understanding how insurance works.
Superb, easy to read fact based analysis by a law professor
Takes details from insurance litigation document discovery to explain exactly how the insurance companies work. The consultants McKinsey, of Oxycodone infamy play a central role.It is easy to read, clear and well structured. The dispassionate prose makes the cynicism of the insurance companies all the more shocking.
great read
i enjoyed reading it, also eye opening
A disheartening look at a once-trustworthy business
Solidly researched and written, this book confirms your worst fears about your insurance company. A note that this only covers property & auto insurance - you'll have to go elsewhere for the tragedy that is health insurance.
