Digestive Health With Real Food: A Bigger, Better Practical Guide to Anti-inflammatory, Nutrient Dense Diet for Ibs & Other Digestive Issues

Description:

Unlike narrow diets that tell you what to eat and what not to eat, the protocol presented in Digestive Health with REAL Food, 2nd Edition explains why certain foods are problematic for some people, and how to determine if they are problematic for you. Personalization is critical in tackling digestive issues from as many angles as possible, and this book will help you discover, and build, the optimal diet for you.

Chapter 1 reviews the basic functioning of a healthy digestive system, including the leaky-gut concept and the importance of stomach acid and gut flora. In Chapter 2, Aglaee builds on this information to reveal the many ways your digestion can go wrong. You will learn about non-celiac gluten sensitivity, SIBO, and FODMAP intolerance, along with many other digestive disorders.

Food can either compromise your gut health or help it function more optimally, and Chapters 3 and 4 cover different foods and food groups to so you can understand what you should and should not be eating. Everyone is different, and individual tolerance varies, but knowing which foods are more likely to be problematic can help you better appreciate how your digestive system reacts to what you eat.

In Chapter 5, it is time for action! You will learn how to proceed with the elimination diet protocol based on the type and severity of your symptoms. Then, in the reintroduction phase, you ll learn how your body reacts to specific foods so that you can start building your personal optimal diet.

While food is the central factor in digestive health, supplements and the mind-body connection play a big role. Chapter 6 addresses supplements including homemade bone broth, fermented foods, glutamine, omega-3 fats, and vitamin D that can support your digestive and overall health.

Chapter 7 demonstrates that the mind and gut are interconnected. Aglaee offers important advice on stress management, sleep, and exercise, which should all constitute an integral part of your gut-healing program.

Your new way of eating shouldn t prevent you from eating out and traveling! All you need is a little planning. Chapter 8 will help you develop strategies to live your life to the fullest without having to worry about digestive problems or limited food tolerance.

Chapter 9 is all about troubleshooting. It is chock-full of practical and often easy tips to help you address cravings and fatigue. It will also help you understand why symptoms can return, and how to deal with them.

Chapter 10 is where things get delicious! You ll find dozens of meal, snack, and treat recipes and ideas to make sure you are forever excited about eating REAL food. You will never again have the excuse of saying you do not know what to eat!

Too many people fail at following an elimination diet because they forget that it is about eliminating problematic foods not calories! Chapter 11 gives you an idea of what a week of eating in the elimination and reintroduction phases looks like. It also details how much you need to eat to ensure you get enough calories. The nutritional protocol suggested in this book is far from a starvation diet, and this chapter will help you make sure you are eating enough.

Nobody knows what you should eat, but your body will tell you if you learn how to listen. This book provides a comprehensive, practical, step-by-step guide to a REAL-food-based approach to recovering your digestive health naturally and building your personal optimal diet.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Buy to Heal Your Gut

I am an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach and in school to become a Nutrition Health Councilor. In our first week of school for Nut. Health Conc. I spent 4 weeks learning the digestive intensive. This book covers a good portion of what I learned and puts it in layman terms. Since all disease begins in the gut, if you are having any digestive issues and your looking for a holistic (non medicine) approach to healing long-term and not masking the root cause, you have to buy this book. The information provided is all useful and applicable. It's the size of a school textbook, easy to read and has beautiful photography. I wish I could meet the author, Aglaee Jacob and thank her for her contribution. I have ulcerative colitis and have tried many of the suggestions she outlines but not in the same well thought out manner. You bet I will be using her method. I love the fact that I can Build My Own diet after eliminating certain foods for a short period of time. You introduce foods back in one at a time and if you don't have symptoms, you can consider that food ok to eat. The key is patience which I've failed to have in the past when eliminating foods. If you have any digestive issues, I suggest investing in this book. There are used options for purchase as well. Don't let the price stop you from buying it.

Stop the neverending Google searches and read this book! Digestive Health with REAL Food has been my number one kitchen companion for several years now. Aglaee’s book is like the digestive bible when it comes understanding how our guts work, providing carefully thought out plans, plus satisfying and delicious recipes. Living with gastroparesis and multiple food sensitivities myself has made me very aware of just how important proper digestion is. The research and suggestions she shares helped me to understand why this may be happening along with simple tips that can make such a difference. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve returned to the pages to help me understand these challenges and make choices to get back on track.I love that there is also a chapter dedicated to the mind and body, as more and more we are seeing how much self-care is needed and, in itself, can improve our digestion. The DHRF Cookbook that follows is filled with recipes I make and share with friends and family (who equally share the love!) like Tummy Gummies, MCT Bomb Smoothie, Speedy Recovery Soup, Banana Muffins and Pancakes, and more. Thank you Aglaee for sharing your own experience and knowledge to help so many others!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best resource out there for anyone with gut issues!

The more I learn about health, the more I become aware of how important healthy digestion is to a healthy body. When I went though my coursework with the NTA, I was taught that the gut is the root of all disease, in addition to being the first place to start when trying to help someone regain their health. A very important fact I have learned in all of this: A healthy diet is not able to help you if you are not digesting properly. Yes, getting all of the processed foods, grains, sugars, and food chemicals out of your diet is beneficial. But what a lot of people don’t realize, is that all of the years of eating those toxic foods has ruined their digestion, and diet change is not a magic bullet.Personally, I spent over a decade eating a low-fat, vegan diet that was super high in carbohydrates. This created nutritional deficiencies that caused me to have low stomach acid, greatly impairing the entire digestive process further south. Furthermore, all of this mal-digested food and excess carbohydrates went to feeding pathogens. I found myself battling an h. Pylori infection, SIBO, and parasites (not to mention the terrible symptoms that went along with this – heartburn, bloating, gas, and constipation). This was in addition to, and no doubt exacerbating the leaky gut I have because of my autoimmunity. By the time I found out about the autoimmune protocol and removed the food triggers from my diet, I was able to make some progress, but I did not truly heal until I properly addressed my digestive issues. This is why I believe this book is so important to anyone attempting to heal from a chronic health issue like autoimmune disease. Not only does Aglaee walk us through every step of the digestive process, the way it is supposed to work – complete with simple terms, charts and illustrations – but she then breaks down all of the ways digestive dysfunction can happen. She explains common digestive issues like IBS, food sensitivities, SIBO, and GERD, among others, including the common causes and methods of testing for proper diagnosis and treatment. She explains concepts like why people can become sensitive to certain foods when they have a gut infection, or why taking a proton-pump inhibitor for GERD or acid reflux fails to address the real cause of the dysfunction. One of my favorite charts in the book lists all of the problems with the digestive system that a person could have, and all of the tests that can be run for those issues. My experience is that most people do not get proper testing for gut issues when they visit the doctor, and arming yourself with this information is invaluable. After the overview of digestive function and dysfunction, Aglaee has a great chapter on the dietary interventions a person could take at an aim to help their issues. Instead of proclaiming a one-size-fits-all approach, she gives an overview of some of the common dietary interventions and argues for an elimination diet tailored to a person’s unique situation. Her guidelines for the elimination diet are spot on: Real, unprocessed food, easily digestible, low-allergen, anti-inflammatory, nutrient-dense, carb-restricted, and customized. She has an entire chapter devoted to the nitty-gritty of how to structure your elimination diet, which is chock full of information, as well as a chapter on supplementation (which I really enjoyed, seeing as it started with bone broth, liver, and fermented cod liver oil as “supplements”).Something Aglaee covers in her book that I believe is often ignored is the mind-body connection when healing digestive issues (or any health issues, for that matter!). She has given us some wonderful suggestions about how we can get our bodies into a parasympathetic (not stressed) state for eating, which is incredibly important. I have noticed a profound impact on my digestion after implementing a mini-meditation before starting my meals, even if it is just a few breaths with my eyes closed before I begin to eat.As if nearly 250 pages of information (which I only barely summarized here) wasn’t enough, the book includes a ton of recipes and a section on meal planning. Most of the recipes are for simple, healing, and nourishing foods one could make while on the elimination diet, and most of them are autoimmune protocol compliant or could be easily modified to be that way. The photos are beautiful, and the recipes include lots of flexibility and options. This is definitely a book I would recommend everyone have in their collection. It is so full of information that is incredibly pertinent to anyone on the path to better health. Even if you don’t think you have problems with digestion – chances are, if you have an autoimmune disease, you do. It is an excellent resource both for those who know the basics and want some more in-depth information, as well as the beginner who has never considered the thought that they could have a fixable digestive issue. If that isn’t enough, the sections on tracking, reintroductions, meal planning, and other resources are incredibly useful to someone following the autoimmune protocol.
