5.0 out of 5 stars As informative as ANYTHING i've ever read on the topic all combined, as comforting as sitting down with a friend to chat...
I can remember hitting a wall with my own digestive health after multiple tests, appointments, suggestions, and supplements from my MD as well as naturopath. I found myself one night sitting down and googling my alphabet soup of suggestions i'd received "SCD, GAPS, FODMAPS, nightshades, Paleo-AIP" and hit enter...and the first site to pop up was Aglaee's Paleo Dietician site. Right there, in this one website were charts describing ALL those diets and morphing them into one real foods approach to gut health. I was mystified! How could this one person seem to "get" all my questions circulating in my head so easily? I knew she MUST have been down a similar digestive path if she knew that a person would so easily be comparing/contemplating all these diet avenues and feeling lost...and might be wanting a way to combine it all for an optimal shot at gut recovery. I found myself clicking around her site more and learning more and more and feeling more at ease. So i took a leap of faith and sent a message to this random dietician in Canada...only to wake up that next morning and have a message back! I quickly decided i'd like to work with her so joined one of her REAL Food monthly groups. Then, as i was gleaning SO much information from her each day within that group, she decided to start a Digestive Health with REAL Food online group and i knew that was the next logical step for me, I already knew real food/paleo quite well, but still needed more held fine tuning my gut recovery from SIBO. Month by month i learned more and more and took far greater strides in my health than i ever have before. Then Aglaee announced her upcoming book release and i will be honest, I thought for a moment, "What more could I learn in a written book? I've already learned SO much from her/the group...I'm sure it's all just review for me". But then i decided i had learned so much from her, I'd very much like a book so that i could share the info with others who asked me about my recovery/gut health, so I ordered it. I will tell you quite honestly that this book did not just meet my expectations, it FAR surpassed them. I skimmed the entire LARGE book the first night it arrived...believe me, it was worth a late bedtime that night! Then, starting the next day, I read the book...again, this is a FULL book, a LARGE book! Now, i'm half way through re-reading it. That's three times through and i'm learning more EVERY time.A few of the things that work so well for me in the book (and there are many...but for the sake of space i'll just name a few!):1) Some of the most easy to follow charts for fast reference that i've ever seen. Keeping in mind, I was already in love with Practical Paleo for the charts it had, this one goes far beyond.2)The way reading it feels like i'm having a conversation with a friend about the issues. Literally i can be reading about the benefits of probiotics and in the back of my mind thinking, "yeah...but i've reacted to many of them" and then in the very next sentences Aglaee will acknowledge and discuss how/why some folks react to probiotics, even though they are often suggested early on to folks with gut issues. The same thing for fermented foods, bone broth, and even the various foods higher in FODMAPS. She gets it, that it's NOT a one size fits all tx approach for gut recovery.3) She is practical. There is never a condeming feeling in the book for when you fall off the wagon/have a lapse in your food plan. She acknowledges it happens, is compassionate, and moves on to what to do about it.4) There's no hiding in the book/how it's written as you read it that she's been there, been through the trenches of an elimination diet and working slowly back to building her own diet for optimal gut health. It's like reading a book on pregnancy...do you REALLY want to read a book from a man on how your body will feel/handle pregnancy when he never could have experienced it? Same thing here...reading from someone who has felt the ongoing stomach issues and has had to exert her own time, energy, patience to re-build her gut...to experience bad food reactions and continue to move forward, it is a comfort and understanding in sharing info/education that only comes from having been there and knowing what it feels like.5) Beautiful pictures and recipes that you can actually use as you're reintroducing foods (plus tips for how to continue to keep out potentially problematic foods and still use her recipes). Word has it that a correlating cookbook with additional recipes will be out later this year, I'm guessing that will be just as awesome and on my wish list as well!I tried Gluten Free eating...it was not enough for my gut...I tried Paleo and it was not enough for my gut...I tried SCD and it still had triggers in it for my gut. A random night of googling out of frustration/despair/and ongoing gut issues and i found/tried Aglaee...then i started making true progress.
5.0 out of 5 stars A Nutrition DREAM BOOK
After waiting several months for this book to come out, I ordered it through Bolo and it arrived in less than 2 days. It is exactly what I had been looking for- A NUTRITION DREAM BOOK. Truly it is one of the best books I have read on nutrition (I am a dietitian). It is written by a very well-researched and experienced Registered Dietitian who clearly knows her stuff, and shares it. This book not only goes back to the basics using sound evidence, it lays out simple explanations and dozens of bottom line tables and diagrams that are highly useful (especially for on-the-go mamas/professionals like myself who consider reading a sweet luxury). The tone of the book is informative, gentle, helpful, positive, and inspires hope. It is a great resource for clients, students, health and fitness enthusiasts, patients, healthcare providers, etc.I have a solid Real Foods lifestyle foundation, and am making a few significant changes per the book's recommendations. Above all, I am further increasing healthy fats, avoiding the problematic carbohydrate foods, and am trying out the suggested timing of digestive supplements. In 3 days of these changes, I have noticed a significant improvement in my digestion. About 80% of the uncomfortable "bum belly" symptoms are gone, a welcome sign that my digestion is beginning to normalize. I imagine that a few more months of walking this path will lock-in the improvements and help recreate a healthy gut. I want to thank author Aglaee Jacob for her wonderful contribution to people's health!
4.0 out of 5 stars Super helpful information!
I learned so much from this book. Already I have seen improvements in my digestion. It is very clearly written and i enjoyed the charts etc. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to get on top of their gut issues. Love that she offers much info on the different approaches to this challenging issue. Aglaee is considered the "paleo dietitian" so I found her approach to be right in line with what I believe and follow already. On the downside, I would have given this five stars if the index had been better. Its very difficult to look things up in the book. Also, its too bad the food pictures aren't more luscious. The food looks unappetizing in the photos and there is no reason for this! The recipes themselves are ok. I had to tweak a bit on some to make more palatable (especially like the unsweetened Macaroons but had to add an extra egg white to get it to work). Would have been nice to have the elimination recipes separated out from the rest of the recipes.I would recommend this book to anyone who has been suffering the effects of IBS. She gives clear step by step advice on the elimination diet in addition to other options and supplement to try. Love her focus on healing the gut.
5.0 out of 5 stars Informative, easy to understand, flexible
Easy to read, very useful information and recipes for digestive health. I like that Ms. Jacob is a professional dietitian who has also learned all about how food is metabolized and utilized in our bodies. I know I can trust her expertise as well as learn from her easy to understand way of explaining things.Three additional things I especially like about the book: 1) It is organized in such a way that it is easy to find and isolate any particular question that comes up, and the information includes easy to read summary charts of the information; 2) The recipes are delicious, but simple and use ingredients that I either already have in my kitchen or can easily obtain in my local grocery store; 3) The recipes are presented with the basic recipe, plus options to make it according to your own needs or desires - for example, she tells how to modify to be gluten free and/or dairy free, or vice versa, and notes as to whether they are compatible with special diets, like SCD, GAP, FODMAP, etc. This is a great reference book to keep handy in the kitchen.
Every health advisor should read this book
This is a superb book, full of useful information about how to solve problems of the digestive system. It is a beautifully written, high quality book, which explains how the digestive system functions and how problems such as leaky gut can cause many other serious autoimmune problems via the mechanism of molecular mimicry. The author discusses FODMAPS (fermentable carbohydrates), SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth), gluten intolerance and candida, plus the importance of adequate stomach acid and how to diagnose problems using an elimination diet. The book is laid out really well, with concise chapter summaries and many very useful tables to make the information easy to understand. It also includes details of Elaine Gotschall's Specific Carbohydrate Diet and the GAPS (Gut And Psychology Syndrome) diet of Dr Natasha Campbell- McBride. This is one of the best nutrition books in print. If health advisors prescribed this book to people with digestive and autoimmune problems, a huge burden would be removed from the NHS.
Easy to read and highly informative...time to try it out for REAL!
The information in this book is extremely well written, easy to follow and understand, while still covering a lot of difficult concepts. I have read through this book a number of times to try to prepare myself for following an elimination diet in the hope that I can identify potential food sources for my various long-term and relatively mild conditions, the worst of which is waking daily between 4-6am with abdominal pain radiating to my back.If I had one reservation with giving it 5 stars, it has to do with the statements relating to the mineral content in bone broth being "unknown" and yet assuming it contains high levels of calcium and other essential vitamins and minerals. A quick Google search shows both old and recent studies into the mineral content of bone broth prepared in various ways, including as described in this book, and shows that mineral content is quite low compared to other natural sources. That being said, lots of additional reading and research shows that other components of bone broth and the REAL diet outlined in this book will provide adequate levels of vitamins and minerals to support healthy digestion and bones...it's not just calcium!
helps to understand how we should look after ourselves
Very well written, explains all the questions and different allergies and tollerances with all tha symtoms, unfortunatly not on my starch allergy.
Six stars~!
I cannot recommend Aglaée Jacob's book, Digestive Health with Real Food, highly enough (Six stars~!)My husband was debilitated by extreme & undiagnosable nausea for almost 19 months. During this time, a host of specialists poked, prodded, tested and hypothesized & came up with nothing (then shrugged & left us alone with a deteriorating, undiagnosed, unresponsive health issue that has caused him to be unable to work since December 2013).We have tried all kinds of nutritional therapies, including a strict Autoimmune Protocol (& a low-FODMAP Autoimmune Protocol). The Autoimmune Protocol helped his autoimmune symptoms, but the nausea just kept getting worse, until he was almost completely disabled. We heard about Aglaée Jacob's book from someone who was experiencing the resolution of her long-term health issues through this protocol & ordered it right away.Within 9 days on this new protocol my husband's nausea had reduced from a 7-10 (on a scale of 0-10, in which ‘0’ is no nausea and ’10’ is completely incapacitated) to a 4-6. Six weeks later, it is still in the 4-6 range, but with the reduction in nausea (& his increased capacity to get nutrients from food) he is gaining strength daily. And we now have a bunch of other treatment strategies we can try. When he started, he was unable to care for himself. Not only was he suffering excessively, but I was drowning in stress: I was caring for him; keeping the household running; keeping up with a demanding career (currently our only option for income); parenting; and worrying constantly about our future. Our life was basically wrecked. Now we have hope. Something we haven't had for a long time. And an understanding about what is actually happening, which will enable us to continue to find effective treatment.Aglaée's book is dedicated "to everyone suffering from digestive issues and feeling abandoned by conventional medicine". That's us. But thanks to Aglaée we aren't feeling abandoned anymore~.
