5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for wine geeks. You NEED this book!
This is a truly excellent wine book! There are lots of wine books with tons of information. And there are plenty of wine books that are well written. But there aren't a lot of wine books that are beautifully crafted and deeply informative. Spencer's Etna book is definitely one of them. Perhaps that's not surprising, since the author is a poet and writer who lives in Sicily. It might seem that a wine book about not just a small region of Italy but a small region within that small region would be uninteresting to anyone other than specialists. But Spencer's book is a terrific read even if you rarely or never drink Etna wine and whether or not you ever intend to visit the region. Of course, if you do drink Etna wines or if you do intend to travel there, the book is indispensable. Every wine lover should have a copy, as should every wine bar and Italian restaurant.Spencer's book is thoughtfully designed for people with a variety of interests, including those who want to geek out about geography, soil types, and viniculture. But it also includes separate sections on history and, importantly, travel, with detailed information about many Etna wineries. It's illustrated with delightful photos, many of which the author took himself.I hope there will be a new edition when Spencer updates the information on wineries, which will likely expand as interest in and travel to the region does. More maps would be helpful. And although the pictures are great, they would be even better in color.
5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Resource for the Place, the Wines, the People, Everything about Mount Etna
This is a book for tourists, wine students, wine lovers, anyone interested in learning about a new place. This book basically covers everything about Mount Etna, which is why I have gone back to it, time and again, to check on a wine, or a neighborhood and basically there so much information in it, I haven't read everything.North draws you in from the get go in his acknowlegement section where he describes his journey and path to arrive on Mt. Etna. Quite frankly, after reading this section, I wanted to be teleported to the coastal town of Riposto rather than in cold Chicago where I live.I use this book as a resource to learn more about Etna wines, which is an emerging area in the wine world. I refer to it when I want to go down the Etna rabbit hole, because there is so much there to learn. So for me, it is "the" most current resource on this area. He is incredibly thorough in all the different facets, the history, the soils, the wine makers, the neighborhoods. It really is indispensable if you are an Italian wine lover/student and want to know more about this area.
5.0 out of 5 stars A great resource for wine lovers
This is the book I've been waiting for on Etna wines. Not only does Spencer illuminate the intricacies of this ancient/emerging wine region's unique terroir and culture but he also provides up to date, clear, and concise information on lunar phases, soil nutrients, and other relevant themes to the larger world of wine.I'm only half way through the book but needed to drop a review as this book merits a place on any wine nerd's book shelf. That being said, I do however disagree with the assumption that this book is for anyone with a passing interest in Mt Etna or in wine. While the book is written in a VERY approachable way, it is packed with information that pretty much targets readers that have perhaps a bit more than a basic understanding of wine. Can't wait to finish it.Bravo!
5.0 out of 5 stars Great information on Mt. Etna area wines!
My husband, who knows his wines, really enjoyed this book. There are very few books about this wine region in Sicily. We visited Sicily shortly after he completed the book and the information and advice was very helpful.
5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for fans of Etna wines
Truly enjoyed reading this book. Part travelogue, part history & geography book and part oenophile fantasy, I could not put it down. As someone who traveled to Sicily a couple of years ago, and fell in love with the island and Etna wines, this book is everything I was looking for, and would have loved to have read before my trip. That said, this gives my plans to return added incentive, and a trip to wineries with Ben Spencer of Etna Wine School is in the cards. Very well laid out and organized by slope, this book has made it easy for me to plan my next visit, and helped me decide which wineries to visit. I highly recommend this book.
5.0 out of 5 stars THE book on Mt Etna!
I had the pleasuring of touring on the north side of Etna one day last summer with Ben and headed back next month. His book is a joy to read, and thoroughly demonstrates his extensive knowledge of the mountain, though history, geography, volcanology and the wines. More than all those things though, his love of his adopted homeland of this corner of Sicily shines through on every page! Bravissimo, Ben!
5.0 out of 5 stars Mount Etna is uniquely wonderful
Written in English by an American winemaker and oenophile who married into Sicily and has lived on the volcano for some time, Ben tells an intimate story of the time he has devoted to learning, tasting and meeting the winemakers. Mount Etna is a unique place and he captures the nuances of the wines and winemakers, the history and complexity, discussing the innumerable choices that confront anyone who chooses to farm there. I enjoyed being transported.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of Etna Wines
This is a must read if you plan on traveling to Etna or if you love Italian wine. A great overview of the region with very detailed descriptions of all the wineries. Very compelling read.
A must-read for anyone into wine ...or Sicily
There are few texts on wine and the history and development of a terroir as active and vibrant today as Etna which can grab your attention in such a gripping manner whether your are a wine expert, an international, American, European, Mediterranean or Sicilian food & wine and travel aficionado.
The only book on the subject?
Well written, easy to read (despite having to struggle with US English and units). Accessible to both the wine expert and the interested visitor. Recently published (2020) so as up to date as one will get - important as wine books date quickly, and this is a rapidly changing region. My only criticism is the lack of a map or two. Rather quaintly, all the illustrations are in black-and-white.The book's first half is the story of present day winemaking on the mountain itself, the second a directory of producers.N.B. This is NOT a guide to the wines of the whole of the island of Sicily, but only those from the slopes of Etna itself.
Can't wait to go there
I'd never have thought reading a book about wine would be soothing. Benjamin North Spencer's storytelling style is strangely comforting. Straight away, you know you're in caring, patient, knowledgeable hands, as easily sharing about viticulture as history as chasing after your windblown hat.The book is intensely packed with information, but totally absent of wine snobbery, which so often permeates the global industry. Instead, this book spins a romantic atmosphere around the mountain and its clusters of grapes. There's love in the way he speaks of Etna, as though the taste of its wine is a song or a language of its own, expressed through grape, natural yeasts, sun, rain, lava, and sea. The families who nurture and pick the grapes and coax this language from the wine are every bit part of the same story of Etna itself. You can almost taste the wine described on these pages, which is both a delight and a form of torment, since we couldn't travel there this year as planned. There is so much deep connection expressed through this book that I feel as though I've fallen for the region, long before setting foot there. I look forward to visiting now more than ever, once the world recovers from the blow of 2020.
great reference book on the Etna wine region
About 1/3 of the way through and find it very informative, a good reference book on the region.
