About the Author

Helene Glidden was born in 1900 at the New Dungeness Lighthouse on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. She originally wrote "The Light on the Island" as a memoir for her children. Her father was a noted lighthouse keeper in the Pacific Northwest until his death, while on duty, at the Semiahmoo Lighthouse in Blaine, Washington in 1919.

Mrs. Glidden also published a cookbook, "Pacific Coast Seafood Chef" in 1953 along with many articles and stories for several magazines. Her writings contain a wonderfully innocent sense of humor and a unique wit.

A very interesting account and glimpse into the life of a family in charge of running a light house. I live on Whidbey Island so this story appealed to me as all the names of places in the story are familiar to me and many of the places I have visited. This book helped me to be able to view the world through child like eyes again because much of the story is a account of the author’s childhood and how she saw her world. This is a book I will read many times. The quality of the book including print, paper, and binding is also great.

Wonderful story about a family (large) living on a fairly isolated island in the US San Juan islands. Interesting area history, family hardships, criminal elements in early 1900's

5.0 out of 5 stars The Light on the Island

Our family including my 2 brothers & I moved from a prairie sheep ranch in central Montana to a small Lopez Island farm in 1944 & our elementary teacher Mrs. Gallengar read this book to us. We loved this book, a chapter every day. I was so pleased to find it again and relive Helenes adventures on Patos Island,as well as our own, I read it all in one day. It made me laugh & cry and it brought back a lot of our chidhood memories of getting our chores completed each day, Dad taking us to the beaches to fish, dig clams, pick our crab pots & beachcomb, coming home and preparing it for dinner. The book is a wonderful story of living the simple life. Helene & her brothers didn't know they were poor. My brother borrowed the book & enjoyed reading & reminiscing also. It was nice to read of this young girl's heartbreaks & experiences. It makes me want to go home & take my children and grandchildren. We were so rich & we didn't know it. This is a keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thirteen children on an island

S.S. · January 19, 2014

My mother read this to us 50 years ago, at night, sitting around the large stone fireplace, on our own island on the Rideau. Some themes are dated like 'dirty Indians' and excitable French Canadians who swear a lot but the kids have great adventures on the island and, of course, 'God' is there, too! There is tragedy - three of the children die and one is crippled - but lots of hilarity as well. Life as lighthouse keeper is hard work - keeping the light lit and shiny, vegetable garden, caring for your own calves and horses, storms, rescuing people from shipwrecks, arresting drug runners. It's fast-paced, solid writing, and based on a true family...lots of fun. Would probably need some discussion between parents and younger children. Definitely a classic in my eyes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Innocence and the sea

P.S. · August 14, 2008

This is an amazing book... I was really moved by the adventures and trials of this little girl growing up on an island by the lighthouse, with the backdrop of the beautiful, yet dangerous, Pacific Northwest at the turn of the XX century. The language is simple and direct, but the stories are so full of life and all those little details that make up childhood. Even if this book is a child's story, it is very romantic, in the highest sense of this word. So if you love the sea, or childhood, or the Northwest, or if you're a dreamer at heart, read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars What life for the lightkeeper’s kids is like

I’ve always wondered what it was like for the lighthouse keepers and this book tells stories from the viewpoint of one of the kids that grew up on an island. It’s very entertaining as the author and her many siblings had many adventures and those adventures are told in an engaging way. It left me wanting to know even more and I was happy that there was a follow up at the end with some more of what happened after the book and some fact-checking. Unfortunately someone needs to fact-check the fact- checker as they made some errors. I read it after a delightful weekend on the islands and it just makes me want to go back!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love This Book!

We have boated to this island many times and I was so excited to find this book. I have given as many presents. While the writing is geared to children, adults love it, too. The description is so good, we take the book and try to find where certain things happened on the island. My 75 year old mom loved it so much that she requested we take her there for Mother's Day.

3.0 out of 5 stars If you care about the environment and don't find (mild) profanity to your taste, this is not the book for you.

L.F. · November 20, 2015

I read this book when I lived on Orcas Island, and thought it would be a nice book for our friends to read out loud to their children. The first line in the book is, "'Damn-it-to-hell', roared Papa." By the second chapter, some of the children are swearing, too. Worse than the continual cursing is the attitude towards the environment, such as collecting wild birds eggs and emptying them for the shells (without eating the egg). I quit reading after chapter four. If you care about the environment and don't find mild profanity to your taste, this is not the book for you.
