Everything good; calligraphy

5.0 out of 5 stars Calligraphy

Ken Brown's book, "Calligraphy", is the first book I used to learn Calligraphy, but over the years I have lost my copy. For some time, I have been looking for a used copy for my library, so I was thrilled to find Bolo offered a brand new copy in mint condition. It arrived in very good time, at a good price, and in perfect condition as advertised. I still like Ken Brown's approach, and I am glad to know I have an "old friend" back in my library. Thank you much.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book, and a bit of a mystery

G.H.L. · August 11, 2019

I found this book a bit mysterious. It is written as a "beginner's" book, with lots of information on materials, tools, inks, studio setup, practice processes, etc. It then has sections on different hands and the nature of them and their differences. The book is loaded with lots of examples of Mr. Brown's work. It is really good stuff. His autobiographical comments are interesting. So what's the mystery? I can't figure out if it is a beginner's book, or one for a moderately familiar scribe who needs help progressing, or an experienced calligrapher who needs ways to perfect small details. In short, the book is a little of everything, perhaps most useful in small doses as a calligrapher is "born" from someone who is truly eager to learn. Further, the book feels dated, and perhaps a little out of touch with current problems and techniques. It's hard to tell, since I don't know when this was written or modified over the years.A book that covers the same kind of ground, but has the feel of an up-to-date set of information, is Margaret Shepherd's "Learning Calligraphy." I have thoroughly read both books, and I like them both, but give the edge to Ms. Shepherd's.I'm glad I have both books. I believe most beginners would be on solid ground with either one as a guide to getting started. I was looking at them as I was trying to choose a book for a introductory calligraphy class I plan to teach. Because of availability and "look and feel" of the books, I choose the Shepherd book .... but I think I would want a serious student to also have access to the Brown book. That's my mystery. Bias alert: I have used various Shepherd books through the years and have learned so much from her work that gives me a slight bias toward her books. But Brown is very good, so it wouldn't be wrong to use his work either. A beginner wouldn't need both. Only an experienced calligrapher might find both of them useful.I don't think either of them give a very good description of how to deal with errors while writing. I think this would be a good thing to have in depth. Aside: there are some YouTube sessions that deal with this, but most are very "light weight." More myseries!

1.0 out of 5 stars Pages literally fell out of book

S. · April 11, 2023

I think my title pretty much covered it. It appeared to be a new, unused copy of a workbook that was printed in the 70's. It received no care during the last 50 years and when I got it and opened it the pages literally fell out. It was intended to be a gift, but I bought the last copy and will now have to find a different book.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite book

This is my favorite calligraphy book. So easy to help me teach others this art.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand.

S. · July 4, 2020

I really like Mr. Brown. Easy to understand good for basic beginning of this craft.

but not great. It does provide excellent examples of the lettering ...

A.S. · November 10, 2014

Not exactly what I expected. It is OK, but not great. It does provide excellent examples of the lettering format, but it does not provide lettering of entire alphabets. I was hoping that this book would provide not just some basic examples of the various lettering, but provide full alphabets to show the beginner how each letter should appear. I would recommend this book for an advanced calligrapher, but not for the novice.
