5.0 out of 5 stars Home Work - Handbuilt Shelter by Lloyd Kahn

G.R.K. · March 27, 2005

This book is a sequel to Kahn's 1973 book "Shelter". Another large oversized book, it is a book that you won't be able to put down. The book claims some 1100 photos and over 300 drawings all illustrating shelters of one type or another that are built by hand. Most of the pictures are in color featuring some of the best photography you will ever see. This book has helped me to realize that I like vernacular architecture - not the kind that comes in a box, but the kinds of homes and buildings people make using the materials they have around them without professional help - or is it-? The rest of the world knows about this type of building and much of it has been there for a thousand years or more.Hippy vans, naked builders, Flying Concrete, Timolandia, ferrocement houses, natural houses, unnatural houses, earth houses, boat houses, tree houses, fantasy houses, a greenhouse built out of old car windshields-- more great houses and buildings than you could ever imagine, simply because many of these places are beyond imagination. This is inspiring me to go finish my secret room so I can show everybody. There are things in this book that are guaranteed to inspire you to do something weird just because they are so interesting looking. Okay - then I'll guarantee that they will inspire me to do something weird. What's new?At any rate, if you are looking for inspiration and want to get away from the cookie cutter look, want something different, or just want to look at pictures because you can't read, then I highly recommend that you get this book. You won't be sorry.Looking at the price I paid at Bolo -$17.79 I couldn't believe it -list on the back is $26.95. It would have been a bargain at the high price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiration for anyone who appreciates the art of building

P.o. · May 31, 2004

Lloyd Kahn's latest book on the ideas and independent solutions people have come up with for building is fantastic. There is an element of nostalgia for anyone who grew up reading books from the alternative press. Llyod's publications being some of the best establish his credentials for this latest effort. It's a small but potent reminder to all the creative builders who might have settled (or compromised) into the pre-fab burbs that there are still people creating unique spaces to live. A subtle reminder disguised as a colorful coffee table tome with a subtle subversive theme. The examples from his photos and short essays of people who with patience, perseverance and lots of creativity build houses only they envisioned.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Treasure!

T.T. · January 9, 2012

For anyone with an interest in unconventional ways of living, self-sufficiency or sustainability, this book is great fun. A large-format paperback loaded with great pictures, it evokes dreams of escaping the mundane and truly tasting the marrow of life. You may not be fascinated by every type of dwelling shown in this book (the old barns didn't do much for me), but if you're even the least bit drawn to the unconventional, you'll certainly find something you like. And if you find yourself in a place without access to the Internet, but aren't in the mood for any heavy reading, "Home Work" is entertaining to look at again and again.

Lloyd is not only a writer about nifty ways to build and live, he is a philosophy of it all, a guy who lives what he writes about. Books like this one inspire, and the value of inspiration cannot be explained in material or monetary terms. Inspiration comes from people - like Lloyd - who can instill you with a feeling and belief of "I CAN", and "You CAN". You can't get more patriotic than that. If we can't do THIS, we have have no reason to go to war. This is the other face of Freedom: Doing it yourself in a respectful way. Bravo Lloyd!

5.0 out of 5 stars What? No hobbit hole?

s. · March 19, 2006

Well, this book has everything in it a person could want. 'Cept maybe a hobbit dwelling. Of course, there's so much imagination and so many ideas, that it wouldn't take much to come up with a very comfy hobbit hole. Now instead of just retiring, I'm dreaming of coming up with something unique that I can work on after I retire. And somehow I find myself coming back to this book for more and more ideas.... this book's dangerous!!!

This is an incredibly inspiring book for anyone who wants to think about the design potential of their living space. My husband and I spent lots of time with Kahn’s books while building three cabins, but even if you’re not going to use it for such an on-point purpose, it’s beautiful. Don’t go here for plans, but to see what’s possible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for ideas and photos

D.W. · June 9, 2015

Cute and covers an enormous amount of ground- mostly non-traditional and sustainable type homes-plenty of great photos

5.0 out of 5 stars An inspiring book on inspiration

H.H. · July 8, 2008

Reading this made my son and me want to build, build, build. At the same time, the book achieves something else: the way people make their homes shows something very intimate and moving. This collection of photographs, drawings and stories shows how closely related the art of building, the art of art and the art of living are. This is one of the rare occasions where I would like to thank the authors.
