Alchemy: An Introduction to the Symbolism and the Psychology (Studies in Jungian Psychology)

Description:

It was the genius of C.G. Jung to discover in the "holy technique" of alchemy a parallel to the psychological individuation process. This book, by Jung's long-time friend and coworker, completely demystifies the subject.

Designed as an introduction to Jung's more detailed studies, and profusely illustrated, here is a lucid and practical account of what the alchemists were really looking for—emotional balance and wholeness.

Once again, Marie-Louise von Franz demonstrates her remarkable gift for translating esoteric symbolic material into everyday experience. For the images and motifs that so occupied the alchemists were of an archetypal nature, and as such they constantly turn up in modern dreams and drawings.

This is an important book, invaluable for an understanding of dreams and indispensable for anyone interested in relationships and communication between the sexes.

Review:

5.0 out of 5 stars Good reading as a first Alchemy/Jung book

A.M. · June 25, 2023

It is a 9 lectures from one of the closest students of Carl Jung. Marie-Louise covers most interesting and important Greek, Arabic and Latin Alchemical texts, explaining basics of Alchemical terminology, making parallels between symbols in history, science, art, psychology and human dreams. It is well paced, but a bit heavy reading at times. However, it is well rewarding and fascinating, especially if you at least have some basic acknowledgement of some greek and egyptian mythos. After the book (1 more lecture left to read) I already feel more confident starting Psychology and Alchemy of Jung himself, so I would consider this one a good general introduction if you are interested. I also think this book is good as an independent thing by itself, even if you are not particularly interested in Alchemy. There are many interesting themes and questions explored within every lecture, and it can be read by anyone basically. The book itself has pleasant cover, nice paper and a lot of illustration (which to be honest help tremendously visualizing and breaking chunks of text). If you are at least a bit interested in either of topics mentioned above, you should do yourself a favor and try the book :)

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book

B.B. · November 30, 2015

I was given this book as a present while in college. I had no idea how it would change the way I perceive the world. I was taking a printmaking class and was exposed to very old working methods of printing. These processes in printmaking deal a lot with chemistry and I could only imagine these methods were stumbled upon and refined by alchemists. Alchemy to me stems from a time when human curiosity and thirst for knowledge was in complete union with human spirituality. As science evolved the need to be as objective as possible pushed spirituality out. There was no was to prove or disprove God. Before I read this "Alchemy" by von Franz and I was shown a book called "Alchemy and Mysticism" by Alexander Roob. You can see it on Bolo here: http://www.Bolo.com/Alchemy-Mysticism-Alexander-Roob/dp/3836549360 . This is a very great book and couples with this book in a magnificent way. Every page has pictures showing the evolution of alchemical thought along with some well written commentary. To me, is to study alchemy it's imagery. It's very rich and cryptic. Von Franz helped me translate this imagery. The subject of alchemy and it's psychology is the history of the human intellect.

5.0 out of 5 stars An introduction beyond a simple understatment

P. · April 21, 2014

I've read a few of Jung's works. I picked up Psychology and Alchemy and could not make much sense of it. This book illuminates the techniques of active imagination and concepts like individuation with surprising clarity and brilliance. In addition, her historical acumen is impressive. There are so many anecdotes in here that I look forward to reading it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars They Spoke Fire

J.M.S. · July 19, 2013

I am using this book in conjunction with a course, They Spoke Fire, taught by Laura Hope-Gill, Poet of the Blue Ridge, NC, at Lenoir Rhyne University Graduate Center in Asheville, NC. We are studying alchemy in terms of inner transformation. Excellent help from this book in understanding a plethora of symbols and their relationship to psychology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic.

Marie Louise von Franz was brilliant. No doubt. Her work is clear and simple. Her explanations of Jungian concepts is outstanding in every way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the psychology of Alchemy

M.P.L.M. · February 6, 2010

If you're reading Jung or have read Jung and are finding his ideas about Alchemy a little complex, then this is a perfect introductory text. As von Franz points out, Jung has done all the hard work for us. If so, then von Franz makes all of Jung's hard work even more accessible.

Fascinating

P.K. · November 12, 2023

A very intriguing book that really gets you thinking. It's one ill re-read throughout the years and I expect new layers of understanding will dawn on me from read to read. I'd recommend Carl Jungs book "Psychology and Alchamy" for further reading.

It's OK

T. · August 10, 2020

The book is ok, some marks of use nothing special. The worst part was the delay. Probably it's not the company's fault but the shipping. I don't know.I received several books that I bought after that one, before. a lot more than a month to receive it. But now it's here

Great book!

E. · June 23, 2022

The book is the perfect start point for who wants to understand alchemical symbolism and finds the texts of Jung on the subject a bit complicated.

Jungian Thought at Its Best

J.C. · August 7, 2019

Marie-Louise von Franz is one of the best writers and interpreters of Jung, who knew him as well as anyone. She is an important thinker in her own right. This book makes alchemy come alive and makes clear its psychological relevance. Perhaps it is a consequence of where I am in my psychological journey of individuation, but I have found no other book as relevant and practical in pointing the reader to many critical issues in that process. It is no cookbook, as none would be possible in this journey, but von Franz makes explicit the major issues in the process and how they relate to alchemy. It will lead to much thinking, exploration, and I hope dreams. It will bear rereading at least a few times. It is a gold mine.I cannot recommend this book too highly for anyone interested in Jung, alchemy, or the path of individuation.
