Black Lives in Focus

Description:

History is a puzzle with many pieces. For African American history, many of these pieces had been lost up until now. The Ross J. Kelbaugh Collection, formed over almost fifty years of hunting for photographs, prints, documents, books and objects, has found many of those missing pieces. The result is a comprehensive, chronological “teaching collection” comprised of about 800 photographs, documents and objects that were discovered that help to tell this story.

This is a new and expanded catalogue of the highlights from the collection including all those included in the three-part soft cover series now published together into one, elegant hard back volume that spans from Colonial American to the election of Barack Obama in 2008. Included are even more features of 120 stories with their related artifacts along with a gallery of rare photographs featuring rare portraits in the early photographic formats including daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, melainotypes (early tintypes), cartes de visite, cabinet cards, stereoviews, real photo postcards, celluloid button photos, and gelatin silver prints of enslaved and free African Americans, many of whom are identified which breathes life into many of these faces from the past. Photography is a theme in the collection as it became important in the lives of African Americans, enslaved or free, soon as after its discovery. For those free, and a few who were enslaved, the photography studio was where they were free to record themselves with dignity in a manner of their choosing as they experienced this “New Birth of Freedom” years before the abolition of slavery and this freedom continued during the following years of Jim Crow as the technology increasingly became accessible by the masses. This is resource for students of African American history, classroom teachers, amateur and professional historians, and anyone interested in learning more about this rich, but often neglected part of American history.
