5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I watched a lot of YouTube videos, many of the people highly recommended this book. I totally agree that it is a very informative book. Excellent start for beginners
5.0 out of 5 stars This is a phenomenal herbal handbook
For those interested in a true understanding of medicinal uses for herbal plants, this is a fantastic how-to guide. Some have mentioned that the delivery of material is too lofty and full of spiritual indulgences, and I think that is an unfortunate oversight on the part of those readers. Just like Gestalt theories of German philosophers, it's true with plants as well that "The whole is greater than the sum of it's parts". It would be short-sighted to break the use of a plant down into simple formulas and recipes without a broader appreciation of the mystery behind those processes. Knowing that a formula works for a certain plant to treat a person a certain way falls short of considering the wider potential of the plant and the process of treating with medicine as an act itself. Mr. James Green is an epic authority on this subject. From a practical standpoint, I have never seen a more thorough yet concise presentation of how-to on herbal medicines as this book presents. Often I've come across "guides" that essentially tell you things like 'a leaf can help a headache' and little more. This book supersedes a vast portion of the other herbal guides out there by a long shot. The recipes and details in this book are complete and really give you the information you need to start with understanding a plant and move all the way through creating a useful medicine without missing a thing.Another brilliant point to mention is that Mr. Green presents this information in a way that is accessible for even a city dweller with a passing interest, as well as the avid horticulturalist. He presents some very accessible examples of common plants that anyone in the US would have access to, without detouring on concoctions that most would have to appreciate as merely theoretical. The processes used to get from plant to medicine are absolutely feasible and very clear. And there is still enough skill and science packed in to indulge a scientifically-minded chemist as well.Of course this won't cover every plant or every technique you might need, but this is a very thorough guide and an excellent reference. Check out the excerpt if you're not sure it's your style, but be assured this is an excellent herbal handbook.
5.0 out of 5 stars For the budding herbalist & the well-seasoned alike
I read a lot of reviews to find a top-tier herbal remedies book and this consistently ranked high. Yup, it holds true. Super-knowledgable, with lots of good practical information and recipes for salves, decoctions, tinctures, etc. The only thing I was hoping for was colorful illustrations of detailed plants and parts. Excellent, essential book for the both the budding herbalist and the well-seasoned.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great book
Book is great for beginners herbalists but not so much for recipies. Author goes into detail about everything from start to finish of herbalism
5.0 out of 5 stars Best herbal book out there, hands down
I own numerous herb books and have a Master of Herbology degree. This is the absolute best herb book out there, no contest. It is jam packed with information, written in a conversational and sometimes humorous style, but you are learning deeply with every passage. This is NOT a basic herb identification book or a basic "what herb to use for" book. Those are numerous and readily available. This book is about making herbal medicine, and it covers just about every aspect you could imagine. For both the rank beginner and the seasoned herbalist. This should absolutely be in your herbal library.

Practical, useful and entertaining
This is an extremely useful book for those of us who would love to make our own herbal 'stuff' but don't know how. Green concentrates on a small number of herbs with wide uses, most of which are available (sometimes for wild harvesting) here in the UK, and presents enormous amounts of practical information geared towards lay herbalists who want to experiment with making their own preparations. Use this book for practical, easy to use low-down on how to make creams, salves, lotions, tinctures and many other herbal preparations. Green has a lovely voice and presents his material in an intelligent, entertaining way. Although my herbal library is extensive, I come back to this book again and again when it comes to making herbal preparations.
Perfect for beginners
Yes, it has a lot of abracadabra things in the book, it leans a little bit on the "magic of the plants". But If you are a beginner like me, and don't know where to start, what materials you need, or how to get the things you want out of your plants, this book it's actually a very good place to start.
A perfect herbal manual
A wonderfully written herbal manual, from simple step by step guide to folk herbal extractions & tincturing to a summary guide of CSHS list of 30 therapeutic herbs as a must to have on hand. I specially love the authors take on familiarising ourselves with a select few herbs, to touch, taste, smell & use them, your guide to selecting your herbs can be an exceptionally & deep personal experience.Easy book that anyone can follow.
Best book for all herbalists
This book is by far the best resource I have found for a beginner herbalist. It has lots of information that is easy to follow and has step by step instructions on how to use your herbs properly. Definitely worth a read
